'Midwife' screening to help Childbirth in Chattanooga

The resource agency Childbirth in Chattanooga will present a screening of the documentary "Midwife" as part of its fundraising efforts to apply for nonprofit status. The film will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at Barking Legs Theater, 1307 Dodds Ave. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

"Midwife" focuses on a Minnesota home-birth midwife during her first year as a certified professional midwife. It follows her through prenatal, birth and postpartum visits while also examining what the birth environment looks like in states where home-birth midwifery is illegal and families have fewer birth options.

According to Childbirth in Chattanooga representatives, 22 states do not allow CPMs to attend home births. Those who choose to practice anyway face the possibility of arrest. The film posits that such restrictions have politicized a basic human right.

The film trailer may be viewed at www.midwifethedocumentary.com.

Approximate running time is one hour and 45 minutes. Local home-birth midwives will be available after the screening for an informal Q&A session.

Tickets are $10. Tickets and T-shirts may be ordered at www.childbirthinchattanooga.com/fundraising.html.
