'A Christmas Story, The Musical' a cornucopia of holiday cheer

The Chattanooga Theatre Centre enchants theatergoers with a gift of holiday cheer in its latest production, "A Christmas Story, The Musical."

This stage version of the holiday classic follows the adventures of the beloved Parker family, first introduced in author Jean Shepherd's short stories and semi-fictional anecdotes, later the basis of the popular 1983 film.

Excitement and anticipation quickly erupt into smiles and laughter in this collaboration by director Scott Dunlap, musical director George Quick and choreographer Lindsay Fussell. A cast of 27 and orchestra of eight make it an evening of festive revelry.

As the beloved story of young Ralphie unfolds, through the telling of the ever-present narrator, the audience is drawn into his quest for that special Christmas gift, the Red Ryder carbine action, 200-shot range-model air rifle.

Dunlap's costumes perfectly reflect the nostalgic 1940s, while Sarah Miecielica's set design magically allows the scenery and props to transform from the Parker home to Ralphie's classroom and back during Ralphie's daydreaming.

Special recognition is certainly deserved by Greg Rambin Sr. as Jean Shepherd and the adult Ralphie, as well as Cannon Hunt and Benjamin Brown as young Ralphie and Randy, respectively.

Nick Lyles steals the show in that memorable moment at the flagpole when icy metal meets warm tongue.

Equally charming, Jeff Hill's "Santa" is one that will not soon be forgotten. Musical theater, CTC style, yields several outstanding musical numbers. "A Major Award" features the male members of the cast with an entourage of leg lamps. Beth McClary as Miss Shields, the teacher, and the kids are true standouts in the fantasy 1930s speakeasy number "You'll Shoot Your Eye Out."

With something for everyone, this CTC production is a wonderful gift to enhance the holiday season with merriment and goodwill for all. Full of singing and dancing, "A Christmas Story, The Musical" brings that magical holiday experience to life in splendid array.
