Courter: Things I wish my kids would ask me

Editor's note: Barry Courter has a 24-year-old son who is a college graduate and a 20-year-old daughter who is a sophomore in college.

Q: Dad, it suddenly occurs to me that I probably might maybe need to work this summer. Any suggestions?

A: Came up with that all by yourself, did you? Actually, now is the time to start looking and making some contacts. Or at least now is a good time to start making lists of the jobs you'd like to do, and the ones you have a realistic shot of getting. Hopefully, the two lists somewhat resemble each other. Once you've come up with a short list, go see the manager or owner in person and inquire about summer openings and the process of getting hired. Wear something nice and go by yourself. Showing up with a buddy signals you are not serious, among other things.
