Q: My son will turn 4 this summer and I am considering getting a bouncy castle to help celebrate. Are they safe for young children?

A: Reconsider inflatable bouncers for children. Bouncy castles are a staple at kids' parties, but that doesn't mean they're safe for little ones. In fact, 31 American children head to the emergency room every day for broken bones, strains, sprains and other injuries they incurred while playing in bouncy inflatables. The average age of children who get hurt is 7 .

To prevent injuries, make sure the castle is properly anchored and maintained. Limit the number of children playing at one time. Many injuries result from kids falling into or on top of one another. Also, don't allow children younger than age 5 to play in the bouncy inflatables.
