Voices of Faith: What should a Christian do in these days?

I will be so delighted when this election cycle is over. It seems once again that Christians are looking to Washington for answers to what ails our country.

As much as anyone, I want to see this nation elect leaders that are pro-life, pro-traditional family and fiscally conservative. However, I know that no one who is elected can resolve what truly is wrong with our society.

Only God can and he will not until we follow the prescription in 2 Chronicles 7:14: "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."

What are our wicked ways? Primarily, we allow our children to be taught that God is not our creator and have done so for decades. Romans 1:18-32 reveals the wrath of God that comes upon any people that reject him. As a result, God has allowed sinful people to plumb the depths of their sinful desires. Therefore, we have homosexuality, murders and every unimaginable wickedness.

Washington cannot stop this downward moral spire. Only God can bring the United States of America back to righteousness. First, we who name the name of Christ must humble ourselves, pray and turn from our wicked ways. Then, and only then, will God heal our land.

How will that happen? When we repent of our sins, we will once again experience the blessings of God. We will be filled with the Holy Spirit and will have the boldness to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ like the New Testament believers did in Acts 4.

Now, it is important to note that those same believers were opposed by the religious leaders of their day. They were told to stop preaching the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Acts 4:18-20, we read of that encounter: "And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard."

We may be opposed by government officials. We may be told to stop preaching Jesus and proclaiming the truths of the Bible. However, we have a mandate from God in Matthew 28:18-20 and Acts 1:8 to tell people everywhere how they can receive eternal life in heaven through Jesus Christ and avoid eternity in hell.

What would happen if believers all across this land would begin again to share the Gospel with their family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, classmates and even their enemies? Well, the Gospel is the "power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth" (Romans 1:16). Therefore, I believe that thousands of Americans would come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Then, as a direct result, lives would be changed. Those addicted to drugs, alcohol and sex would be set free. Anger and violence would be replaced with love and peace. Greed would be exchanged for generosity.

And God will bless America once again.

What is a Christian, every Christian to do? Preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone.
