Many times it's obvious when you need computer help - you know, those times you feel like throwing it out the window. But sometimes it's not so apparent. And even when it's obvious, you might keep putting it off.

So here's a reminder: If you think you need help, take the time to find a computer support company you feel that you can trust to help before the problem gets worse.

Look for these problems

* Noticeable performance change: If you notice your computer is working much slower, giving you more errors, or exhibiting other weird behavior, have a professional take a look as soon as possible. It could be one of many underlying causes, including viruses, adware, corruption after an install or update or a failing hard drive.

* Getting pop-up ads or aggressive alerts: If you regularly get pop-up ads or strange alerts saying you have viruses or computer issues, be weary of those. Just about all aggressive or forceful ads and alerts are scams.

So if you're getting them, your computer may have viruses or adware. Don't click on the ads or alerts. Don't call any phone number they say to call, and certainly don't provide payment to any company if you have any doubts of their legitimacy.

* Friends and family get spam from you or you get from them: Hackers regularly spread viruses and spam by hijacking and spoofing email accounts. In some cases, they send the emails out to a victim's entire contact list or address book. That way the email appears to come from the victim, increasing the chances of someone opening it and creating yet another victim.

So if you get weird messages from people you know or people you know get weird messages from you, have a professional take a look at your computer and email. You might also suggest the same for your affected friends or family members.

* Hearing clicking or other strange sounds: Besides music and other audio coming from your speakers, the only other sound coming from your computer should be from the fan(s) inside the case or tower. If you hear any weird noises, specifically clicking sounds, I suggest getting it checked out. It could be various things, including a malfunctioning fan or disc drive, or even a dying hard drive.

* Getting unexpected restarts or shut downs: If your computer is automatically restarting or shutting down and then alerts you of an unexpected or improper shutdown when it comes back on, there's likely a hardware or software issue.

* You're getting a new computer: In addition to helping transfer files and documents from an old computer, a professional can also help get paid programs installed as well. This could include previously purchased software like Microsoft Office, which may be possible even if you don't have the install discs, so you don't have to purchase it again.
