James Dunn

James Alfred Dunn, 77, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009.

Mr. Dunn was preceded in death by his parents, Samson and Lois Dunn; sister, Noble Canoy; grandson, Mark Dunn.

Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of 46 years, Catherine Dunn; children, Danny Dunn, Delores Corbitt, of Scottsboro, Roy Dunn, Sandy Tidwell, Richard Dunn, of Chattanooga, David Dunn, of Blount County; sisters, Mollie Guthrie, Dollie Williams, Ruby Whitaker, Janie Bonds, Bessie Russell, Sue Whitaker; brothers, Rayford Dunn, Gerald Dunn; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.

Family will receive friends 10 a.m.-8 p.m. CST today, Dec. 19.

Funeral services will be at noon CST Sunday, Dec. 20, in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Eddie Shubert and the Rev. Elwood Dunn officiating.

Interment at Preston Cemetery, Preston Island, Ala.

Sarah Goodwin

Sarah Gertrude Boyd Goodwin, 85, of Chattanooga, died Friday, Dec. 18, 2009.

A native of McMinn County and longtime Chattanooga resident. She was retired from Red Food Store.

A graveside service 3 p.m. Monday Riceville Cemetery.

Visitation 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Smith Funeral Home in Athens.

Robbie Hancock

Robbie Brown Hancock, 63, of Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009.

She had lived in the Chattanooga area all of her life and was a graduate of Rossville High School. She moved to Cookeville five years ago.

Robbie was a member of Trinity Assembly in Algood, Tenn., and was a former member for many years at Daisy Church of God. She was employed at UCHRA. She was a member of ESA Gamma Chi Chapter for over 30 years, and did extensive fund raising for St. Jude Children's Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Hancock; and her father, Rufus Brown.

Survivors are three daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Christian Bennett of Hixson, Jennifer and Carson Kemp of Knoxville, Lindsay and Robert Elliott of Nashville; one son, Sean Poole of Hixson; her mother, Lorena Cooper Brown of Cookeville; a brother, Roger Brown of Memphis; and six grandchildren.

Services will be held 2 p.m. today, Dec. 19, at Daisy Church of God with the Rev. Mike Campbell officiating. She will lie in state at the church from 1 until 2 p.m. today.

Entombment will be at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Dorothy Heard

Dorothy Coen Heard, 89, of East Ridge, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009, at her home.

She was born in Byron, Ga., but moved to Chattanooga in 1929. She graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1939 and later graduated from the Licensed Practical Nursing School at Chattanooga and worked at Erlanger Hospital. She headed the first Enterstomal Therapy Department there for nine years before her retirement in 1982.

She was an active member of Jones Memorial United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the Adult Bible Class and 55 and Alive Senior Group. She was a Girl Scout Leader of Troop 259 in the sixties, a life member of East Ridge Jr. High, Chattanooga Ostomy Association, Church Women United Representative and a volunteer driver for Interfaith Senior Services for 10 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack H. Heard; son, Leslie Heard; mother, Frances Pool Morphew; father, Terrell Brunson Brown; stepfathers, John Coen and Claude Morphew.

Survivors include her daughter, Jacquelyn Owens (husband Don), of Knoxville; daughter-in-law, Ernestine Heard, of East Ridge; grandchildren, Amy Purcell (husband Jason), Mary Brown (husband Dusty), Juliett Westbrook (husband Chris) and Matthew Heard; great-grandchildren, Michelle Heard, Reed Brown, Noah Purcell, Garrett Westbrook and Elsie Brown.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Jones Memorial United Methodist Church with Dr. J. David Tabor and the Rev. Mark Womack officiating.

Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Alma Kelley

Alma Ann Kelley, 74, resident of Ooltewah, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday morning, Dec. 17, 2009. She passed away in a Chattanooga hospital with her loving family by her side.

She was a member of Mountain Meadows Church of God in Ooltewah. She was well known for her incredible talents of singing and playing the piano and she was an accomplished gospel recording artist. She was a loving wife, mother and "mom mom", standing beside her husband, B.L., for 54 years in ministry in the Church of God. She was a mother, "mamma" to so many. She was very passionate about missions and helping those without. She was an ambassador of hope and love with compassion to the hurting.

She was preceded in death by her parents, the Rev. T.L. Forester and Ruth Bernice Summers Forester.

She is survived by her husband, the Rev. B.L. Kelley; son, Patrick L. Kelley; daughter and son-in-law, Susan D. and Johnnie W. Rodgers; brother and sister-in-law, James R. and Shirley A. Forester; two precious grandchildren, Joshua J. Rodgers and Austin L. Rodgers; and two great-grandchildren, Lexi and Paris. A host of friends also survive.

A Celebration of the Life and Home Going of Alma Kelley will be held Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Mountain Meadows Church of God in Ooltewah, with the Rev. Kevin Wallace and Dr. Larry and Jan Timmerman officiating.

Interment will follow in Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park with Josh Rodgers, Austin Rodgers, Josh Guyselman, Buddy Barns, Eddie Trotter, Randy Slegl, Danny Kelley and Donny Kelley serving as pallbearers.

Rose Marie Murphy

Rose Marie Whetstine Murphy, 79, of Mooresville, N.C., passed away Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at Levine Dickson Hospital House.

Born Dec. 8, 1930, she was raised in Morgantown, Ind. She was the daughter of the late Jenny and Peter Whetstine and was also preceded in death by her brothers, Richard and Calvin.

Rose Marie graduated with honors from Morgantown High School where she was active in band and was a cheerleader. She attended Franklin College in Indiana on a scholarship majoring in Languages. She was a member of ZTA sorority, on the cheer leading team and was elected homecoming queen her sophomore Year. Rose was active in Morgantown Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School classes and singing in the choir. She was also an accomplished tap dancer and horseback rider. She was fond of telling the story about giving a dance recital to the Woman's League in the morning then taking first place in the horseback barrel racing event that same afternoon.

Rose Marie met and married John Christy Murphy while in college and they were married for 56 years. They moved around the country due to his job with RCA and at one time she commented that they had bought and sold ten homes in as many different cities before they settled in Chattanooga where they lived for 35 years.

Rose, who was nicknamed "Rodie" became a proficient golfer and was active in both the Tenn Woman's Golf Association and the Chattanooga Woman's Golf Association. She won the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club Woman's Tournament; the City Woman's Tournament and the State Senior Woman's Tournament. In addition to golf, Rodie became active in Martial Arts where her children were taking Karate. She was the first woman black belt in Bando Karate and this achievement was a feature article in Karate Illustrated magazine. She was also interested in Tai Chi and was accepted as a student by a famous master in San Francisco.

Rose Marie's life was one of achievement; raising four outstanding children and setting examples for them through her own accomplishments. She was a patient and understanding wife who supported her husband in his business ventures. Her love, wisdom and counsel will be missed by her family as well as by all who knew her.

She is survived by her children, James Murphy, Dr. Laura Murphy, Thomas Murphy and Nancy Lusardi; nieces, Christy Lynn and Jo Carol; nephew, Stanley Whetstine; grandchildren, Mike, Joe and Robbie Lusardi, Caten and Ellis Murphy; great-grandchildren, Tyler and Connor Lusardi.

In addition to her parents and brothers she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Christy "Chris" Murphy April 2008.

The family is grateful for the love and care shown by the management and staff of the Preston House Assisted Living and Alzheimer's Care Center and Levine & Dickson Hospice House.

A memorial service will be held in Morgantown, Ind., at the United Methodist Church at a later date.

Mary Nelson

Mary K. Nelson, 85, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009.

She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and was a member of the Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Preston Nelson; and parents, Samuel and Elsie Mae Adams.

Survivors include two sons, Bill (Brenda) Austin, of Tunnel Hill, Ga., and James Austin, of Chattanooga; and granddaughter, April Nicole Earnhardt, of Lawrenceville, Ga.

Gertrude Newby

Gertrude Myrna Grissom Newby, 80, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009 at her residence.

She was a housekeeper for many families and over 30 years for Dan (deceased) and Dr. M.R. Vance and family. She loved them and was dearly loved by them. She was a musician for over 50 years for many churches, including St. John Missionary Baptist Church, First Baptist of Avondale, Gethsemane Baptist Church, Galilee Baptist and Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. She was a member of Resurrected Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Eugene and Ethel Brown.

Survivors: one son, Gerald Newby; three daughters, Sandra Bramlett, Deborah Bramlett and Marcia Newby all of Chattanooga; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives; extended family, Dr. M.R. Vance and family and many friends.

Tessie Beatrice Norman, 73, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, December 13, 2009.

She was a member of Thankful Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Saul and Roberta Brown; two sisters; two brothers.

Survivors: husband, Robert Norman; sons, Clifford Norman, Michael Norman, Anthony Norman and Fredrick (Pamela) Norman, all of Chattanooga; five grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; brothers, Jessie Brown, of Detroit, Mich., and Richmond Brown, of Kenniston, Ga.; sister, Sadie Norman of Chattanooga; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Rita Rico

Rita Barajas Rico, 90, of Chattanooga, Quietly and peacefully stepped into the presence of the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, at the home of her son Councilman Manny and Barbara Rico.

She was known for her absolute trust in the Lord, And Loved for her positive and gentle spirit, and uncomplaining approach to her many adversities of life.

She lived in Garland, Texas, before moving to Chattanooga 25 years ago.

She was a longtime member of St. Elmo Church of Christ.

She was the daughter of Phelipe and Cleta Barajas the oldest of 13 children.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Angel Rico; son, Phelip Rico; daughter, Nifa McCutchen; two grandsons, Troy Jr. and John McCutchen; three brothers Tirso, Savio and Johnny Barajas; sister, Carlotta Barajas.

She is survived by three sons, Manuel (Barbara) Rico, of Chattanooga, Joe (Adela) Rico, Rowlett, Texas, Ross (Julie) Rico, Dallas, Texas; one daughter, Jessie Syr, of San Antonio, Texas; brothers, Henry Barajas, of Moorings port, La., Felep, Willie, Sam, Pete and Andres Barajas, all of Dallas, Texas; sisters, Juanita, Natalie and Mary Barajas, also of Dallas, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; special grandson, Tracey Rico; and great-grandchildren, Tracey Blaine, Ana Gabrielle and Manuel Jake Rico, of Flintstone, Ga., along with many close and loving friends whom she considered family.

George Steeves

George Scott Steeves, 65, of Harrison, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009.

George was a native Californian. He and Grace moved to Tennessee in 2006. They are members of Hickory Valley Baptist Church in Chattanooga.

Mr. Steeves is a Vietnam Veteran serving four years with the U.S. Navy.

George worked as a printer for the Los Angeles Paper for 35 years and he retired in 2005.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Brandon Steeves; stepgrandson, Matthew Davis; stepdaughter, Michele Clark.

Survivors include his fiancee' Grace Evelyn Miller; daughter, Erika Steeves; son, Christopher Steeves; step-daughters, Vicki Miller, Kimberly Miller, Revina Miller; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today, Dec. 19, at the North Chapel with Pastor Chris Hayes officiating.

PIKEVILLE - James Martin Gauger, 65, of the Luminary Community passed away on Monday, Dec. 14, 2009.

He is survived by a son, James Martin Gauger Jr.; and a daughter, Corina Aiken.

Gregory Jones

PIKEVILLE - Gregory Lynn Jones went to be with the Lord Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009. He passed on from his home with loved ones by his side.

Greg gave back to others in many ways. He had fought a long battle with cancer. He participated in many clinical trials to help improve the treatment of kidney cancer. He was PTO president at Wheeler Elementary for three years during which the youth basketball league was started. He was an avid horse lover. He also served as treasurer for the East Tennessee Spotted Saddle Horse Club. As a construction superintendent for J&S Construction for more than 20 years he built many commercial buildings in nearby towns. He worshipped and was a member at Mt. Crest Church of God of Prophecy.

Greg was preceded in death by his mother, Jean Taber Jones; his father-in-law, Herbert Simmons; and brother-in-law, Ronald Simmons.

Greg is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Kathi; children, Adam Jones and Rachel (Brandon) Burchett; granddaughter, Evey Lynn Burchett; father and stepmother, Thurman and Pauline Jones; brothers, Richard and Darrell (Nancy) Jones; mother-in-law, Thelma Simmons; sister-in-law, Patsy (Stanley) Evans; brother-in-law, Norman (Nancy) Simmons; niece, Deborah (Ryan) Bilbrey; nephews, Rodney, Jason (Lisa), and Keith (Julia) Simmons; seven great-nieces and nephews, and many aunts and uncles.

He was of the Christian faith attending Community Chosen Church of God and was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Jane Hatfield Smith; sister, Betty Lou Smith.
