Chattanooga police arrested a man in connection with a fatal car accident Tuesday and booked him on charges of vehicular homicide by recklessness and driving on a suspended license.
Police arrested Clever G. Gomez-Reyes, 21, of 905 Willow St., in connection with the death of Jorge Sevillano, who suffered massive head injuries during the accident, said police spokeswoman Lt. Kim Noorbergen in a news release.
Mr. Sevillano, 38, died Tuesday on Interstate 75 near the East Brainerd Road exit when he was the passenger in a car that attempted to pass a tractor-trailer and struck it from behind, Lt. Noorbergen said.
Based on witness statements and physical evidence, police learned the tractor-trailer was heading south on I-75 behind other slow traffic traveling about 15 mph because of the morning rush hour, Lt. Noorbergen said.
Mr. Gomez-Reyes, allegedly the driver of the Saturn, was driving the car at a rate of speed higher than surrounding traffic and attempted to pass the tractor-trailer, but did not clear the rear of the truck, Lt. Noorbergen said.
The Saturn rode under the rear of the trailer and came to rest underneath it, she said.
