East Ridge: WWTA committee turns down proposal for alternative fee

East Ridge's plan for an alternative to the Hamilton County Water and Wastewater Treatment Authority's proposed $8 fee was rejected Wednesday, according to City Manager William Whitson.

Members of the authority's variance committee voted down the alternative.

Representatives from Ridgeside, Signal Mountain and Lookout Mountain voted to send the $8 fee plan to the WWTA board for a vote on March 18; representatives from Red Bank and Soddy-Daisy abstained from the vote, Mr. Whitson said.

The city had asked the authority to consider a plan that would lower the monthly charge to about $2 and ask homeowners to pay for necessary sewer line repairs themselves.

Those who could not afford the repairs, Mr. Whitson suggested, could apply for federal grant money.

The idea would save money and ensure that collected revenues stayed within the community from which they originated, he said.
