BRUNSWICK, Ga. - The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is beginning a three-year restoration project in the sandhills of the Townsend Wildlife Management Area in McIntosh and Long counties.
David Mixon, regional game management supervisor for DNR's Wildlife Resources Division, says longleaf pines will be restored on more than 2,000 acres along the Altamaha River.
Mixon says the project will begin with the removal of 500 acres of non-native sand pines and some loblolly pines.
He says the project will improve habitat for protected species. He says game species, including deer, wild turkey and bobwhite quail also will benefit.
The work is part of a multi-state Sandhills Ecological Restoration Project intended to restore nearly 36,000 acres in Georgia, Florida, Alabama and South Carolina.
