County needs home rule to merge with city, Littlefield says

Mayor Ron Littlefield proposed today that the county establish its own home rule as a way of unifying city and county government.

"Maybe it's time to revisit it," Littlefield said today during a Civitan Club meeting at Bessie Smith Hall.

He said Hamilton County looked at establishing its own charter in the 1980s. If that were to happen, the city might abandon its charter and merge with the county, he said.

It would take referendums by county residents to establish its charter and city residents to abandon theirs, officials said.
