Chattanooga: City attorney asking for permission to represent city in recall suit

August 31st, 2010 by Cliff Hightower in Local - Breaking News

City Attorney Mike McMahan today asked the City Council to authorize him to represent the city of Chattanooga in a lawsuit against the recall effort.

McMahan said he would not be representing the mayor in the suit and said the city should join the lawsuit in order to get clarification on different parts of the City Charter. Mayor Ron Littlefield filed a lawsuit in Circuit Court in Hamilton County to stop any recall election or referendum from occurring in the Nov. 2 general election.

The comments were made during the City Council's Legal and Legislative Committee meeting.

City officials said today the expenses would be time spent by City Attorney staff.

The City Council could vote on the measure tonight.
