Evelyn Batson

Evelyn Rose Dickinson Batson, 91, died peacefully at her home Friday afternoon, Feb. 12, 2010, surrounded by family and friends.

A native of Mercer, Tenn., she had lived in Chattanooga for 65 years. She was a faithful member of Rivermont Presbyterian Church since its inception. Evelyn enjoyed traveling, painting and spending time with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Glass and Mary Hudson Dickinson; infant daughter, Jane Evelyn Batson; sisters, Virginia D. Frey and Lois D. Roberts.

Survivors include her beloved husband of 69 years, Robert J. Batson Sr.; sons, Robert J. Batson Jr. and James A. (Susan) Batson; grandchildren, Laurel Batson (Jim) Boles, Robert J. (Jane) Batson III and Todd A. (Lauren) Batson; great-grandchildren, Ashley Boles, Brett Boles, Christopher Boles, Jack Batson, Sara Catherine Batson and Thomas Walker Batson; brother, John G. (Virginia) Dickinson; numerous nieces and nephews.

The family expresses sincere appreciation to the staff at Life Care Center of Red Bank and Hospice of Chattanooga, and special caretaker, Nolan Butler.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. today, Feb. 20, 2010, at Rivermont Presbyterian Church with Dr. Daniel Sansbury officiating.

Burial will follow at Chattanooga Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be the Rivermont Presbyterian Senior Adult Bible Study.

Lou Ella Brown, 92, of East Ridge, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

The family will not be present on Monday but would like to give the opportunity for friends to pay their respects at the funeral home.

Aaron Rufus Cash, 82, passed away Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at his residence.

Emma Chambers

Emma Josephine Chambers, 81, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, in a local hospital.

She was born Oct. 3, 1928 in Chattanooga to the late Jesse H. and Susie Fowler Cline. Mrs. Chambers was a former minister at Faith Chapel Holiness Church of God and was retired from Roxbury Carpets after 15 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Ronnie Cline, Jim Cline, Henry Cline, Peggy Floyd, Janelle Lukitch, and Mary Goins.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Raymond D. Chambers; children, Wanda (Michael T.) Whitener, of Chattanooga, Mary Sue Chambers and Virginia Jo Chambers, of Ooltewah; sisters, Frances Baker, of Chattanooga and Edith Peterson, of Hixson; brothers, Nathan Cline, of Rossville and Jesse Cline, of East Ridge; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the North Chapel with the Rev. Don Glenn officiating.

Interment will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 23, 2010, at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at the North Chapel.

Ellen Jean Pinkerton Collier departed this life on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, after a lengthy illness in Chattanooga.

She was born Aug. 9, 1936 to the late Jesse Robert Pinkerton Sr. and Irene Boyd Pinkerton.

She was preceded in death by siblings, Jesse Jr., Naomi Pinkerton Harrison and Hebert Logan Sr.; and beloved aunt, Rachel Boyd Sawyer.

She united with the First Baptist Church of Hixson and was baptized under the Pastorate of the late Rev. C.F. Campbell.

Nina Ferrell

Nina Jo Ferrell, 75, of Hixson, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, surrounded by her loving family.

Nina was a member of Calvary Baptist church. Nina loved to sing at the gospel singing nights at Hardee's and she was always smiling. We will love you and miss you always.

Survivors include her husband of 37 years, Roman Ferrell; daughters, Gale (Jerry) McDowell, of Hixson, Lisa (Larry) Stansell, of Chattanooga and Kim (Danny) Hankins, of Hixson; son, Franklin (Gloria) Campbell, of Indiana; six grandchildren: cherished granddaughter, Ashley Durham, Jerry, Jessica, Brandy, Dustin and Aaron; four great-grandchildren, Gunner, Ava, Jaylee and Joey; brother, John Johnson, of Signal Mountain; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held noon Monday at Lane Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Roberson officiating.

Jo Griggs

Olive Josephine "Jo" Davis Griggs passed away Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010.

Born in Hamilton County, Tenn., on Aug. 13, 1921, she was a daughter of Franklin Emmitt Davis and Mary Martha Smith Davis.

Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Erick Griggs Sr.; two sisters, Amy Davis Houts and Evelyn Davis Manley; and three brothers, Franklin Davis, William Davis and John Henry Davis.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Martha Campbell, of Columbia, S.C.; son, Erick Griggs II and his wife, Bitse, of Ringgold, Ga.; two granddaughters, Margie Blackwelder and her husband, Brian, of Columbia and Missy McKenna and her husband, Donald, of Chattanooga; four great-grandchildren, James, John Campbell, and Molly Blackwelder, of Columbia and Brooks McKenna, of Chattanooga; and several nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services were held Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, with the Rev. Jennifer Newell, First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Cleveland, officiating. Written condolences may be sent to the funeral home for forwarding to the family.

Sarah Hawke

Sarah Ann Rose Hawke, 87, of Soddy-Daisy, left this walk of life surrounded by family and friends to be welcomed by her Heavenly Father on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010.

Our most beloved mother was born May 29, 1922 to the late Edna and Tom Rose. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Soddy-Daisy, member of the Dorcas Class, WMU and Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Shad and Pete Rose; and one sister, Flora Shadwick.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Duval Hawke; two loving daughters, Karen (Don) Beard, of Ooltewah, and Jan (Jerry) Wilson, of Hixson. Grandchildren, Eric Beard, Emmy Brannan, Jennifer Mason and Jeri Wilson; and six great-grandchildren. Sisters, Verna Green and Ruth Elsie; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. today, Feb. 20, and 2-3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, at the North Chapel.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, at Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel, Highway 153 with the Rev. Seton Tomyn and Jerry Wilson officiating.

Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Bill Childers, Red Frazier, John Rawlston, J.R. Rawlston, Arnold Stulce and Gene West serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Dorcas Class.

Louise Knox

Louise Knox, 87, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at a hospital in Douglasville, Ga.

Funeral services will be held today at 12:30 p.m. at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Allen presiding and the Rev. H.H. Wright eulogist.

Interment in Forest Hills Cemetery.

Homer Nelson

Homer E. Nelson, a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010.

Homer graduated from Soddy-Daisy High School in 1939. He was a veteran having served in the United States Army during World War II. Homer served as Hamilton County Welfare Director and Rural Transportation Director from 1959 to 1990.

He was appointed by the County Council and Judge Wilkes Thrasher, Sr. He received a Distinguished Service Award from Hamilton County Government after 31 years and 4 months of service. On July 25, 1990 he became a Charter member of the Tennessee Association for Special Transportation Board.

In the 1950's Homer began a Gospel Radio Show on FM at WDOD. Homer hosted a radio show "The Gospel Train" which aired on WFLI from 6 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. He began his career with WFLI in 1991 and served until his death.

He served as an announcer and sales representative with WFLI. He served as the Music Director at Daisy Church of God in 1958 where he was responsible for bringing the Oak Ridge Boys to perform as well as many other special music programs.

In the 1960s he served as Music Director at Fourth Avenue Church of God and East Chattanooga Church of God. He organized the North Hamilton County Chorus with Clarence Hale in the 1960's. Homer was active in the Downtown Chattanooga Optimist Club where he served as Publicity Chairman from 1992 to 1994.

Homer is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Jackie Nelson; twin daughters, Marlene Erlher of Kentucky and Darlene Davenport, of Kentucky; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Velma Johnson, of Hixson; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronnie Childers, Brother Lee Byrd and Brother Steve Brandon officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 404 S. Moore Road.

Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Edwin Marion Posey, 79, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, in an area healthcare facility.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Middle Valley Church of Christ, 1836 Thrasher Pike, Hixson, TN 37343 with Minister Larry Clements officiating.

Mr. Posey will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church.

Geraldine Ringley

Wilma Geraldine "Jerry" Bryant Ringley, 94, of Hixson, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Feb. 15, 2010, at a local hospital of complications from pneumonia.

Geraldine was born in Catoosa County, Ga., on April 29, 1915, the daughter of the late Arthur and Natalie Legrand Bryant. She moved to Hixson in 1918. Geraldine was a member of Burks United Methodist Church in Hixson.

Geraldine attended Gold Point School in Hamilton County and graduated eighth grade May 9, 1930. She attended Hixson High School and graduated May 8, 1934 as Salutatorian. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Milligan College, May 13, 1938, and her masters degree in education from Milligan College. She also attended Berea College for one year.

Geraldine married Lester Durrell Ringley in 1940 and they moved to Tampa, Fla., in 1942, where she taught in high school and was a football coach. She relocated back to Hixson in 1946, and taught at Ganns Middle Valley Elementary until 1971.

For the past 5 1/2 years, she was a resident at Regency Assisted Living in Hixson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Durrell "Doc" Ringley.

Geraldine is survived by her daughter, Linda R. Smith of Charleston, S.C.; and a son, Don Durrell Ringley of Soddy-Daisy; son-in-law, James Lynn Smith and daughter-in-law, Pam Rogers Ringley; a brother, Wallace Bryant and sister-in-law, Lottie, of Melbourne, Fla.; nephews, Mike Bryant and Jerry McGee; niece, BeBe Bryant; nephews, Peter and Thomas Arthur Bryant; great-nieces, Jessica Bryant and Alexandra Bryant; and great-nephews, Carson and Armon Bryant.

Ms. Ringley's family would like to offer special thanks to Dr. Patton-Evans and to the ICU staff at Memorial Northpark Hospital.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22, at the North Chapel.

Doris Smith

Doris Petty Smith, 78, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010.

Mrs. Smith was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louise and David Petty. Doris had been a member of East Lake Baptist Church since the age of 18 and a member of East Ridge Baptist Church since the two merged. Her Sunday School class held a special place in her heart, and she enjoyed worshipping the Lord through church music.

She graduated from Central High School, class of 1950, and was a member of the Honor Society. Mrs. Smith became a South Central Bell teller upon graduating from high school. She and her co-workers enjoyed working together and being members of the Telephone Pioneers. What she loved most about her job was that it enabled her to work part-time and be home with her children. After 45 years of service, Mrs. Smith retired. After retirement, she went to work part-time at Park Place Restaurant as a cashier, where she enjoyed socializing with old friends and getting to know new ones.

Mrs. Smith adored her children and made them a priority in her life. She was extremely involved in their schools, being PTA President at East Lake Elementary School and a lifetime PTA member at McBrien Elementary School. Doris did her best not to miss a school function or athletic event that her children were involved in. Her family and friends referred to her as "the thumbprint lady" because she made the best little thumbprint around!

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband of 58 years, Kenneth J. Smith; her son, Kenny Smith (Sammye); her daughters, Sheree Ratchford (Ricky), Kathy Kimsey (Kenny), Marie Pryor (Donnie), Becky Cushen (Stan); her 10 grandchildren, Joey Smith (Emily), Heather Wamack (Jason), Casey Smith (Lee), Kendra Kimsey, Brooke Flanagan (Keven), Kristopher Kimsey, Jeremy Pryor, Spencer Cushen, Cody Pryor, Katie Cushen; her six great-grandchildren, Carter and Hudson Wamack, Gracy and Carly Smith, Taylor Boehm and Asher Flanagan; and her only sister Anne McElroy.

Bonnie Thompson

Bonnie Lee Thompson, 86, of Chattanooga went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010.

A longtime resident of Chattanooga, Mrs. Thompson was a member of Harmony Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, three brothers; her husband, Dennis A. Thompson; and her son, Roger McDowell.

Survivors are her children, Sharon Brooks, Chattanooga, Ronnie (Vickie) Thompson, Ooltewah, and Karen (Wayne) Grasham, Signal Mountain; brother, Bill Tanner, Henagar, Ala.; grandchildren, Dathan Findley, Ginger Shields, Duran, Jeremy and Jessica Thompson, Kyle Grasham, John, Blaze and Will McDowell; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.

Randy Higginbotham

SPRING CITY -- Randy Wayne Higginbotham, 56, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, in Cocoa Beach, Fla.

Born in Miami, Fla., on April 14, 1953, he was the son of Rebecca Leigh Higginbotham and the late Morterman Braxton Higginbotham. Randy graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Building Construction. He was employed by TVA for over 30 years and held various positions within the organization. Randy was a Senior Labor Relations Consultant upon his retirement in December, 2009 and had previously served as Human Resource Manager. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Spring City.

Randy is survived by his wife, Norma Sue Higginbotham, of Spring City; his mother, Rebecca Leigh Higginbotham, of Spring City; brothers, Dennis Higginbotham, of Spring City, Grady L. (Deborah) Higginbotham, of Duluth, Ga., and Arthur C. (Abbe) Higginbotham, of Orlando, Fla. He is survived by nephews, Craig Higginbotham and Daren B. Higginbotham; and nieces, Jillian Higginbotham, Cassidy Higginbotham and Kate Mayfield. Randy is also survived by his stepdaughter, Irene (Michael S.) Erwin, of Decatur.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Spring City with the Rev. Brian Price officiating.

Interment will follow in Foster Cemetery in Niota, Tenn.

Bob Tudors

JASPER -- Bobby "Bob" Tudors, 65, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga.

Mr. Tudors was born in South Pittsburg, Tenn., a son of the late Lonnie and Gladys Caldwell Tudors.

After graduating from Marion County High School, Mr. Tudors entered the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Shangri La.

He was the founder of Service Industrial Supply Co. in Chattanooga and served as President of the company until his retirement.

In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by brothers, Harvey, Jim, Billy, Howard and Gene Tudors; sisters, Frances Cox and Daisy Childress.

RISING FAWN -- Donald Russell Blevins (Donn F. Blythe, Silent Wolf KBTI), left this earthly life to join his Heavenly Father on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010.

He was born on May 26, 1943. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Martin Blevins and Lucile Morgan Blevins; and son, Patrick Russell Blevins.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Blevins; sons, Martin (Marci) Blevins, Bill (Susan) Blevins; seven grandsons, Gregory (Tina) Varnell, Mitchell Varnell, Brandon (Cayla) Varnell, Corey Amoson, Jacob Amoson, Derek Blevins, Drake Blevins; one granddaughter, Hope (Kevin) Arp; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Daniel (Juanita) Blevins; two sisters, Deloria Harris, Devonnah (Bill) Privett; several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews, great-grandnieces and nephews, and many cousins and aunts.

Don touched many lives in his 66 years and shared his many talents with all who needed him.

Marjorie Hulsey

RINGGOLD -- Marjorie Jeanette Hulsey, 71, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at her residence.

She was a lifelong resident of the north Georgia area and a member of Center Grove Baptist Church and the Walking Together Sunday School Class. Mrs. Hulsey was retired from the Walker County school system, having served in the cafeteria at Ridgeland High School.

Survivors are her husband of 55 years, Ralph Hulsey; son, Rev. Chris (Laura) Hulsey, Ringgold; sister, Glenda Townsend, Tiftonia; grandchildren, Allison Hulsey and Seth Hulsey.

Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Center Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. David Brown and the Rev. Terry Trivette officiating.

TRENTON -- Charles Edward Lawson, 74, died Friday morning, Feb. 19, 2010, at his home.

He was a retired welder from Combustion Engineering Inc. of Chattanooga. A veteran of the U.S. Marines. A member of Boilermakers Local 656 of Chattanooga and member of Trenton First Baptist Church. He was a very avid sports fan and was Dade County High School No. 1 fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Hazel Lawson; two sisters, Barbara Keesler, Allie Mae Dunn; one brother, Bobby Gene Lawson; and son, Mark Lawson.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Melva Jean Lawson, of Trenton; two daughters, Sharon (Victor) McCurdy, Henager, Ala., Kathy (Mike) Seymour, Wildwood, Ga.; one son, Eddy Lawson, Wildwood; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, also several nieces and nephews.

RINGGOLD -- Ray Ziegler, 70, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at his residence in Ringgold.

He was born in Hamburg, Germany, and moved to Montreal Quebec, Canada, at the age of 15, before moving to Ringgold 33 years ago. Mr. Ziegler had worked in the carpet industry for over 50 years and traveled the world extensively.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Hedwig Rossman Ziegler; brothers, Walter Ziegler and Albert Ziegler.

Survivors are his wife of 47 years, Mary Ziegler; sons, Ronald Ray Ziegler, Ringgold, Bryan Wayne (Lisa) Ziegler, Luthersville, Ga.; sister, Almut Mattfeld, Hamburg, Germany; sister-in law, Judith Ziegler; grandchildren, Ashley and Caleb Ziegler; nephews, Kai and Peter Mattfeld, Thomas Ziegler; niece, Susan Ziegler.
