Lou Ella Brown
Lou Ella Brown, 92, of East Ridge, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010.
Mrs. Brown was born in Decatur, Tenn., where she was raised by her parents, Emma and Joseph Rynes. She graduated valedictorian of Meigs County High School's class of 1935. She was a longtime, devoted member of East Ridge United Methodist Church and retired from Gaither Machine Works where she worked for 34 years as the office manager.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Z. Brown; her parents, and 12 brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her son, Gene Brown; grandson, Bryan E. Brown; granddaughter, Anna Brown Shelsky; great-granddaughters, Rebecca and Joanna Brown; and many nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family will not be present on Monday but would like to give the opportunity for friends to pay their respects at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, at the funeral home with the Rev. Ken Sauer officiating.
Burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Estoria Burton, 86, passed away Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, in a local health care facility.

Aaron Cash
Aaron Rufus Cash, 82, went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010.
He was born Dec. 9, 1927, in Gainesville, Ga.
Aaron had been a member of Highland Park Baptist Church for 42 years, where he had served in the Prison Ministry and Nursing Home Ministry of the Church. A devoted husband and father, he was a veteran of the Korean War, attended Tennessee Temple Bible college and was retired from Roper Corp.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Lou Ella Cash; his brothers, Frank Cash, Carl Cash; his sisters, Mary Louise Cash, Irma Cash, Grace Cash, Lillian Cantrell; and great-grandson, Aaron Lee Blackwell.
Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Bonnie Moore Cash; two daughters, Angela (Randy) Ellis, of Chattanooga, Joy (Oscar) Payne, of Louisville, Ky.; son, Anthony Cash, of Chattanooga; two sisters, Ruth Brownlow, of Gainesville, and Francis Vernon, of Atlanta; three grandsons, Tyler (Samantha) Blackwell of Louisville, Ky., and Garrett and Grant Ellis, of Chattanooga; two granddaughters, Nina (Jeremy) McDougal, of Chattanooga, and Lauren Ellis, of Chattanooga; four great-grandchildren, Courtney Blackwell, Aidan Blackwell, Abigail McDougal and Bentley McDougal, and soon to be Adrianna Hope Blackwell; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Rev. Lloyd Workman officiating.
Visitation will be Monday from 9-9:45 a.m. at the funeral home.

Emma Chambers
Emma Josephine Chambers, 81, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, in a local hospital.
She was born Oct. 3, 1928, in Chattanooga to the late Jesse H. and Susie Fowler Cline. Mrs. Chambers was a former minister at Faith Chapel Holiness Church of God and was retired from Roxbury Carpets after 15 years of service.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Ronnie Cline, Jim Cline, Henry Cline, Peggy Floyd, Janelle Lukitch and Mary Goins.
Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Raymond D. Chambers; children, Wanda (Michael T.) Whitener, of Chattanooga, Mary Sue Chambers and Virginia Jo Chambers, of Ooltewah; sisters, Frances Baker, of Chattanooga, and Edith Peterson, of Hixson; brothers, Nathan Cline, of Rossville, and Jesse Cline, of East Ridge; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. today in the North Chapel with the Rev. Don Glenn officiating.
Interment will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 23, 2010, at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Rev. Horace Chapman
The Rev. Horace Francis Chapman, of Chattanooga, died at a local nursing home on Monday, Feb. 15, 2010, after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Chapman was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church.
Born on Oct. 16, 1919, Horace was a retired Southern Baptist Minister who pastored churches in Texas, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida. He was a graduate of Mercer University in Macon, Ga., and the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bernice "Pete" Chapman; son, Horace Chapman III.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Hunt Chapman, of Chattanooga; brother, Walter (Ida Ray) Chapman, of Valrico, Fla.; daughters, Anna Marie Segall and Mary Lynn Sankey; grandchildren, Heather Segall, David Chapman; one great-granddaughter, Isabella Segall, all of Jacksonville, Fla.; stepchildren, Emily (Paul) Perrine, Nancy (Jerry) Follis, and John (Althea) Hunt, all of Chattanooga.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter Chapman and the Rev. Bert Jones officiating.
The family will receive friends for visitation from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at the North Chapel.

Charlie William Daniel, 84, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at home.
He was retired from U.S. Pipe & Foundry.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mary Daniel; and several brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Daniel; sons, Rickey (Delilah) Daniel and Wayne Daniel; daughter, Nancy Young; and brother, Glenn (Bessie) Daniel; grandchildren, Chris McCulley, Karen Rollins, Evie Hardy, Matthew Hardy and Paul Daniel; great-grandchildren, Robbie Rollins, Kaylin Lovelady, Kaylie Cook; and several other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lelin Everett
Lelin Everett, 85, of Sale Creek, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at Parkridge Medical Center.
Lelin was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Sale Creek, where he served as a deacon and was a member of the Men's Adult Sunday School Class. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army in the European Theater. He was a 50-year member and past master of F&AM Lodge 207 in Sale Creek, where he was a 32-degree Mason and a member of the Chattanooga Shriners and Alhambra Temple.
He was preceded in death by parents, Joseph Henry and Paralee Doss Everett; sister, Ruth Runyan; two brothers, J.B. and Earl Everett; grandson, Daniel Everett Glover.
Survivors wife of 63 years, Betty Everett, Sale Creek; daughter, Loretta Sue Shufett, Sale Creek; grandson, Jeremiah Lee Clabo; granddaughter, Johnna Beth Morgan, Staten Island, N.Y.; sister, Willie Mae Francisco, Sale Creek; brother, Joe Everett, Candler, N.C.; several nieces and nephews.

David Giles
David Lamar Giles, 63, of Red Bank, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010.
David retired from TVA in 2005. He was a member of Stuart Heights Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lother T. and Pearl Ann Giles.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Shirley Giles; brothers, Barry "Rocky" (Martha), Lebron, Dennis (Retha) and Brian (Tina) Giles.

Dr. Robert Giles Jr.
Dr. Robert H. Giles Jr., 95, of Signal Mountain, passed away on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010.
He was born Oct. 22, 1914, in Roanoke, Va., to the late Dr. Robert Harrison Giles Sr. and Lenora Forsyth Giles. He helped provide for his immediate and extended family during the Great Depression, an event that would help forge his goals and values.
Dr. Giles received his medical degree from University of Virginia in 1941 followed by his internship at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga. He was a staff physician at Campbell's Clinic from 1942 to 1944, prior to serving in the United States Naval Reserves from 1944 to 1946 as a medical officer in the WWII Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He served his residency at Erlanger Hospital as assistant then later as chief resident of obstetrics from 1946 to 1948. He had a private practice in Chattanooga with Dr. Charles Hooper from 1948 to 1988, and held memberships in a number of obstetric and gynecological societies and medical associations throughout his career.
A loving husband and father, Dr. Giles was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Bresnahan Giles.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Elizabeth G. (Gary) Flynn, Patricia F. Giles, Robert H. (Kimberly) Giles III, Katherine G. (Steve) Case, and Charles S. "Smitty" (Marilyn) Giles, together with eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Dr. Giles was an occasional golfer but pursued his lifelong love of tennis as a member of Manker-Patten Tennis Club. He also enjoyed fishing and yearly trips to Steinhatchee, Fla., with other members of the medical community for speckled trout and redfish.
Visitation will be between the hours of 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, at Lane Funeral Home, 601 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga.
The funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church on Signal Mountain with the Rev. Kathryn Mathewson officiating.
Visitation is one hour prior to the funeral at the Church on Wednesday.
Burial will follow the service at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Olive Josephine "Jo" Davis Griggs passed away Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010.
Born in Hamilton County, Tenn., on Aug. 13, 1921, she was a daughter of Franklin Emmitt Davis and Mary Martha Smith Davis.
Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Erick Griggs Sr.; two sisters, Amy Davis Houts and Evelyn Davis Manley; and three brothers, Franklin Davis, William Davis and John Henry Davis.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Martha Campbell, of Columbia, S.C.; son, Erick Griggs II and his wife, Bitse, of Ringgold, Ga.; two granddaughters, Margie Blackwelder and her husband, Brian, of Columbia, and Missy McKenna and her husband, Donald, of Chattanooga; four great-grandchildren, James, John Campbell and Molly Blackwelder, of Columbia, and Brooks McKenna, of Chattanooga; and several nieces and nephews.
Private graveside services were held Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, with the Rev. Jennifer Newell, First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Cleveland, officiating. Written condolences may be sent to the funeral home for forwarding to the family.

Sarah Ann Rose Hawke, 87, of Soddy-Daisy, left this walk of life surrounded by family and friends to be welcomed by her Heavenly Father on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010.
Our most beloved mother was born May 29, 1922, to the late Edna and Tom Rose. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Soddy-Daisy, member of the Dorcas Class, WMU and Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Shad and Pete Rose; and one sister, Flora Shadwick.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Duval Hawke; two loving daughters, Karen (Don) Beard, of Ooltewah, and Jan (Jerry) Wilson, of Hixson; grandchildren, Eric Beard, Emmy Brannan, Jennifer Mason and Jeri Wilson; and six great-grandchildren; sisters, Verna Green and Ruth Elsie; several nieces and nephews.

Doris Keel
Doris Little Keel, 87, of Chattanooga, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Keel was a member of Macedonia Primitive Baptist church for 72 years and retired from GE.

Kenneth Metcalf Jr.
USAF retired Lt. Col. Kenneth Bertram Metcalf Jr., 97, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, in Red Bank.
A resident of Chattanooga for more than 50 years, Mr. Metcalf was born in Fountain City, Tenn., and grew up in the Knoxville area where he graduated from the University of Tennessee with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity.
Mr. Metcalf served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II serving as A-4 for the 11th Army Air Force in Alaska and as director of supply and maintenance for the Ontario Army Air Field in California. He was awarded the American Defense Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal for the Aleutian Campaign, the American Theater Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserves in 1972.
Mr. Metcalf was the first manager of Tennessee's first electric cooperative, Lincoln County Electric Membership Corp. and the first manager of the Appalachian Electric Cooperative. After moving to Chattanooga in 1955, he became a member of the Chattanooga Exchange Club and served as its president in 1957. He retired in 1972 after 28 years with the Tennessee Valley Authority, primarily as a writer and administrative officer in the office of the manager of power. He was a member of the Red Bank Presbyterian Church PCA.
Mr. Metcalf was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Lois Rader Metcalf; and brother, George Edwin Metcalf.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Isolde Metcalf; son, Thomas G. Metcalf, of Knoxville; daughter, Christina (and Timothy) Oswald, of Calabasas, Calif.; grandchildren, John, Madeline and Luci; and nieces, Lois Metcalf, of Rochester, N.Y., and April (and Bob) Guest, of Ashland, Miss.
A private memorial service was held at Lane Funeral Home, 601 Ashland Terrace, with the Rev. Everett Gossett officiating and was followed by interment in Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville.

William Mooneyham
William Allen Mooneyham, 66, of Chattanooga, departed this life Friday, Feb. 19, 2010.
He was born in Catoosa County, Ga., to the late William and Susan Mooneyham. He also was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Allen retired from the city of Chattanooga after 17 years of service.
Survivors include his sisters, Rozelle Segelke, Alice Dye, both of Chattanooga, Mary Ellen Hutton, of Alabama, and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at Ooltewah Cemetery with the Rev. Mark West officiating.

Homer Nelson
Homer E. Nelson, a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010.
Homer graduated from Soddy-Daisy High School in 1939. He was a veteran having served in the United States Army during World War II. Homer served as Hamilton County welfare director and rural transportation director from 1959 to 1990. He was appointed by the County Council and Judge Wilkes Thrasher Sr. He received a Distinguished Service Award from Hamilton County Government after 31 years and 4 months of service. On July 25, 1990 he became a charter member of the Tennessee Association for Special Transportation Board.
In the 1950s, Homer began a gospel radio show on FM at WDOD. Homer hosted a radio show "The Gospel Train" which aired on WFLI from 6 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. He began his career with WFLI in 1991 and served until his death. He served as an announcer and sales representative with WFLI. He served as the music director at Daisy Church of God in 1958 where he was responsible for bringing the Oak Ridge Boys to perform as well as many other special music programs. In the 1960s he served as music director at Fourth Avenue Church of God and East Chattanooga Church of God. He organized the North Hamilton County Chorus with Clarence Hale in the 1960s. Homer was active in the Downtown Chattanooga Optimist Club where he served as publicity chairman from 1992 to 1994.
Homer is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Jackie Nelson; twin daughters, Marlene Erlher of Kentucky and Darlene Davenport, of Kentucky; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Velma Johnson, of Hixson; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronnie Childers, Brother Lee Byrd and Brother Steve Brandon officiating.

James Nelson
James F. Nelson, 74, of Hixson, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010.
James was born in Jasper, Tenn., to the late Luther and Alice Brewer Nelson. James served our country during the Korean War and served in Vietnam twice. He was a retired master sergeant from the U.S. Army, where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal (Sixth Award), Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Bronze Star with 2D Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal with 2D Oak Leaf Cluster. After his retirement from the military, James owned and operated Nelson Construction Co. He was a faithful member of Hixson United Methodist Church, the Sam McConnell Sunday School Class and served as a trustee. James was an avid golfer, and he loved to play with his wife and friends which enhanced his life.
He was preceded in death by his parent and nine siblings, Luther, Paul, Louis, Kenneth, Eugene and David Nelson, Elizabeth Middleton, Virginia Pettit and Margaret Isbill.
James is survived by his wife of 26 years, Beth Grant Nelson; two sons, Jim (Maura) Nelson, of Selma, Ala., and Mike (Judith) Nelson, of Soddy-Daisy; two daughters, Patty (Bobby) Hardegree, of Anniston, Ala., and Betty Johnson, of Birmingham, Ala.; two stepsons, Stan (Cindy) Leamon and Scott (Ellen) Leamon; brother, Lawrence (Shirley) Nelson, Bowden, Ga.; and a sister, Carolyn (Bo) Bohanan, of Anniston, Ala.; grandchildren, J. Cole Nelson, Michael Nelson, Johnathon (Betsy) Brock, Jessica (Jason) Crow, Jeremy Johnson, Megan Leamon, Campbell and Laura Leamon; two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Madeline Crow; several nieces and nephews.

Daisy Nieves
Daisy Nieves, 82, of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, in Bogart, Ga.
A native of New York City, she had lived in Chattanooga for the past 12 years before moving recently to Jefferson, Ga. A retired hospital administrator, she was the widow of Juan Nieves and was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church.
Survivors are her son, Michael Santiago; daughter-in-law, Jo Anne Santiago; grandchildren, Michael Ourada his wife, Heather Ourada, Christopher and Ashley Schwarz; and great-granddaughter, Mya Ourada.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at St. Jude Catholic Church with Father Charlie Burton officiating.

Wayne Parden Sr.
Wayne Field Parden Sr., 74, of Chattanooga, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010.
He was born in Chattanooga to the late Sylvester Parden and Zuella Kelley, and was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his loving wife of 35 years, Betty Parden; children, Wayne (Lynn) Parden, Jr., David (Sue) Garner, April (Mike) Lankford, Shayne (Staci) Lankford; grandchildren, Reba Lankford, Janon (Chris) Parden, Brittany (Scottie) Garner, Johnny (Tara) Parden, Duane (Diane) Parden, Cassie (Branden) Pewitt, Jeff (Gloria) Holcomb; 19 great-grandchildren; siblings, Marvine Watson, Wanda Crider, Carolyn Manley, Bud Parden; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Rasor
Mary A. Rasor, of Chattanooga, passed away in her sleep on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010.
She was born Oct. 15, 1933, in Piqua, Ohio, the daughter of Leroy and Lova Davis Willcox.
She graduated from Piqua Central High School in 1951 and was married on Jan. 24, 1953 to Dale B. Rasor, who preceded her in death on March 18, 2008.
She is survived by a sister Chloveta Groff, of Piqua. And her children; three daughters, Deborah A. Torode and her husband Michael, Pasadena, Calif., Cynthia L. Furst and her husband Dennis Rowan, Windsor, Calif., and Barbara J. Rasor, Aiken, S.C.; two sons, Steven D. Rasor, Chattanooga, and David E. Rasor, El Paso, Texas; one granddaughter, Maddie Gordon, daughter of Barbara, Santa Barbara, Calif.; two grandsons, Michael and Mathew Torode, both of Pasadena.
The family has requested cremation.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Ohio.

Louis Rinkus
Louis Paul Rinkus, 89, died peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, in the Hospice Care Unit at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga after a long decline.
He was born on Dec. 9, 1920, to the late Louis and Anna Renkus in Pittsburgh, Pa. He was graduated from Mount Lebanon High School and enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh until the outbreak of World War II, when he served as a U.S. Navy blimp pilot attaining the rank of commander. Following the war, he returned to college and was graduated from Clark University in Worcester, Mass., and earned a graduate degree at the University of Wisconsin. After a 30-year career with the Central Intelligence Agency, Lou and his wife retired to Asheville, N.C., in 1980. He was ordained a deacon in the Roman Catholic Church and served many years at St Eugene's Parish. He was a member of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus. Lou Rinkus did pastoral counseling in the Western North Carolina prison system, and he was an adjunct instructor of mathematics at the Asheville Buncombe Technical College. Lou was for many years a member of the Grove Park Inn Golf Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Else and two brothers, Anthony and Eric.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Finnegan Rinkus, of Chattanooga; two children, Carolyn Rinkus Thompson and spouse, Roger G Brown, of Chattanooga, and Paul F. Rinkus and spouse, Sharon Haber Rinkus, of Shrewsbury Mass.; as well as four grandchildren, Caroline A. Thompson, of Los Angeles, J. Austin Thompson, of Johnson City, Tenn., and Christopher L. Rinkus and Alexander S. Rinkus, both of Washington D.C.
A family memorial service will be held in Asheville in the spring.

Millie Jean Scott, 82, of East Ridge, passed away on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010.
Mrs. Scott was born in Chickamauga, Ga., and was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church where she served as treasurer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Eugene Scott; her parents; sister, Joyce Gilley; and brother-in-law, Austin Ellis.
Survivors include her daughter, Kelley Wells and her husband, Sam; grandson, Richard Scott Wells; granddaughter, Samantha Wells Pitkin and her husband, Caleb; sister, Betty Ellis; and brother-in-law, Maurice Gilley.

Anna Small
Anna "Bettye" Reba Correll Small, 86, died Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, in Palm Bay, Fla., with her family by her side.
Born in Meigs County, Tenn., she was the 12th of 14 children and preceded in death by husband, Robert Small.
She is survived by one son, Robert (Karen) Small, of Ringgold, Ga.; two daughters, Carole (Hoyt) Roberts, of Melbourne Beach, Fla., Donna Bandy, of Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Thompson; of Rockwood, Tenn.: several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life was held in Indian Harbour Beach, Fla., on Thursday, Jan. 28.
Doris Smith
Doris Petty Smith, 78, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010.
Mrs. Smith was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louise and David Petty. Doris had been a member of East Lake Baptist Church since the age of 18 and a member of East Ridge Baptist Church since the two merged. Her Sunday school class held a special place in her heart, and she enjoyed worshipping the Lord through church music.
She graduated from Central High School's class of 1950, and was a member of the Honor Society. Mrs. Smith became a South Central Bell teller upon graduating from high school. She and her co-workers enjoyed working together and being members of the Telephone Pioneers. What she loved most about her job was that it enabled her to work part-time and be home with her children. After 45 years of service, Mrs. Smith retired. After retirement, she went to work part-time at Park Place Restaurant as a cashier, where she enjoyed socializing with old friends and getting to know new ones.
Mrs. Smith adored her children and made them a priority in her life. She was extremely involved in their schools, being PTA president at East Lake Elementary School and a lifetime PTA member at McBrien Elementary School. Doris did her best not to miss a school function or athletic event that her children were involved in. Her family and friends referred to her as "the thumbprint lady" because she made the best little thumbprint around!
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband of 58 years, Kenneth J. Smith; her son, Kenny Smith (Sammye); her daughters, Sheree (Ricky) Ratchford, Kathy (Kenny) Kimsey, Marie (Donnie) Pryor, Becky (Stan) Cushen; her 10 grandchildren, Joey (Emily) Smith, Heather (Jason) Wamack, Casey (Lee) Smith, Kendra Kimsey, Brooke (Keven) Flanagan, Kristopher Kimsey, Jeremy Pryor, Spencer Cushen, Cody Pryor, Katie Cushen; her six great-grandchildren, Carter and Hudson Wamack, Gracy and Carly Smith, Taylor Boehm and Asher Flanagan; and her only sister Anne McElroy.

Ronald Spear
Ronald Neal Spear, 57, a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, faithful husband, father, poppy, brother, uncle and church member, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010.
He was a deacon at Calvary Bible Church and retired from the U.S. Army Reserve after 24 years.
He was preceded in death by his father, Johnny Leo Spear Jr.
A member of the 212th Transportation Unit and the Garrison Unit, he was activated during the Desert Shield/Storm War as an air arrival and departure first sergeant.
Ron was a graduate of Dade County High School and attended Chattanooga State Community College and several Military Schools and Austin Peay State University. He attended Mid South Beauty School and received several awards for his styling competition. For the past five years he has served as account manager at CSSI. He was a member of the Chattanooga Chapter of Christian Motorcycle Association.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Dale Gilbert Spear, of East Ridge; two sons, Chris Spear and his wife, Wendy, of Chattanooga, David Spear, of Indiana; granddaughter, Hannah Spear, of Chattanooga; mother, Betty Spear, of Red Bank; brother, Kenneth Spear and wife, Shirley, of Chickamauga, Ga.; sister, Teresa Handley and husband Ed, of Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews. Three loving Yorkies Tori, Mollee and LuLu.

Ruby Etter Stafford, 83, of Ooltewah, passed away Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at her home.
She was a lifelong resident of Hamilton County and was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Ollie Phillips Crumley; and daughter-in-law, Jeanie Stafford.
She is survived by her husband, James Bill Stafford, Ooltewah; son, Fred Stafford, Ooltewah; granddaughter, Jodi Taylor, Cleveland, Tenn.; brothers, Ed Crumley and Orville Crumley, both of Ringgold, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mike Thatcher
John Michael Thatcher, 82, a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, passed away on Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, following a brief illness.
The youngest son of Alfred and Miriam Thatcher, he attended Bright School and Baylor School in Chattanooga. After graduating from Westtown School in Pennsylvania in 1945, Mike served in the U.S. Army until 1947. He graduated from the University of Chattanooga in 1951 and served as president of the UC Alumni Association in 1953.
As an export manager, Mike was employed at Standard Coosa Thatcher and participated in many international trade groups. He joined with other local businessmen to establish the World Trade Council in Chattanooga. In the1980s, Mike was instrumental in founding the Chattanooga Food Bank.
Mike loved nature and enjoyed exploring local lakes, rivers and hiking trails. He loved hiking the National Park Service trails on Lookout Mountain and worked as a trail volunteer. He served as a caretaker at Reflection Riding and a volunteer at the Chattanooga Nature Center.
Mike was an active member of the Unity congregations in Chattanooga, serving on the board of directors of Christ Unity, as a Course in Miracles facilitator, and as a founding member of the Unity of Chattanooga congregation.
Mike was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Hibbard Thatcher.
Mike is survived by his brother, David Thatcher; sister-in-law Ruby Thatcher; stepson, Said Nuseibeh; nieces, Maris Thatcher Meyerson and Ellen Thatcher Barrett; nephews, Todd Thatcher and Jonathan Thatcher, all of California, and nephew, Alan Thatcher, of Chicago; many local cousins, including first cousin Joe Thatcher; and dear friends.
The family extends their appreciation and gratitude to the staff at Life Care Center of East Ridge for their support of the family and compassionate care of Mike during his transition.
A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Mike's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28, at Unity of Chattanooga, 604 Black St., Chattanooga, TN 37405.

Mary Westerman
Mary Elizabeth Doutaz Westerman 95, a resident of Chattanooga for 45 years, died Friday Feb. 19, 2010, at a local health care center.
She was a faithful member of St. Stephen Catholic Church. Mary "Tince" Westerman was born in Louisville, Ky., and after obtaining her registered nursing degree from Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital in Louisville, she pursued a medical career which culminated in private-duty nursing for many of Chattanooga's leading families. She also supported her husband's naval career of 30 years moving the family every two years from Kentucky to Hawaii and stations in between.
Mrs. Westerman was preceded in death by her loving husband Edward of 62 years; daughter, Suzanne Westerman Daugherty; parents, Maurice and Margaret Doutaz, and seven of eight siblings, the sole immediate family survivor being her sister, Rita Eicher of Louisville, Ky. She is also survived by one son, Michael and wife, Mary Davenport Westerman, of Signal Mountain; four grandchildren; Edward M. Westerman Jr., of Nashville, John Graham Westerman of Christiansburg, Va., Laura Smith Chaplin, of Fort Collins, Colo. and Anna Jane Smith, of Austin, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Morgan Chaplin, Ed Chaplin and Thomas Westerman; along with a multitude of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staffs at the Alexian Health Care Center and Carestone Assisted Living for their compassionate care of our mother over the last seven years.

Madeleine Whitten
Madeleine Wilson Whitten, 88, of Chattanooga, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at Memorial North Park Hospital.
Mrs. Whitten was considered to be the matriarch of Mississippi Avenue since she and her husband, John, had lived there over 55 years. She took great pride in her neighborhood and yard. She won many North Chattanooga beautification awards for her efforts.
She was an avid gardener and could be seen working from sun-up to sundown tending her roses, feeding the goldfish or pruning the shrubs.
Mrs. Whitten was born in Kingsport, Tenn., but spent most of her childhood in Athens before moving to Chattanooga where she met and married John B. Whitten.
The family would like to thank Dr. Minton, the emergency room doctor who took care of Mrs. Whitten when she entered the hospital; surgeon Dr. Chavarria who was so kind and patient with the family; and RN Patrick who showed great concern and empathy for the family Wednesday night. We would also like to thank Dr. Jack McCallie, mother's personal physician, for always treating Mrs. Whitten with dignity and respect.
Mrs. Whitten leaves her husband of 69 years, John B. Whitten; four children, John R. Whitten, Joy Ward (Richard) Hempy, Richard K. Whitten and Stephen D. (Linda) Whitten, all of Chattanooga; one brother, John Maxwell of Ringgold, Ga.; three grandchildren, David (Kim) Hempy, Brian Hempy, of Columbia S.C., and Kendall Ward (Brad) Rogers, of Houston, Texas; and four great-grandchildren, Karis and Brycen Hempy, of Chattanooga, and Nolan and Connor Hempy, of Columbia.
Mrs. Whitten was a devout Christian and we know that she is now lovingly in the arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ.

She is survived by her daughters, Mary Louise (Bob) Stinnett, of Palmer, and Faye E. "Perkie" (Bob) Greene, of Starke, Fla.; sister, Mary Lillian Henderson, of Chattanooga; six grandchildren, Beth, Stephanie, Kay, Bobby, Jim and Richard; 11 great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Frances Hale
GUILD -- Frances Myers Hale, 90, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at Windlands Assisted Living in Nashville.
One of two daughters born to the late George and Bertie Mae Pope Myers, she lived most of her life in Guild, where she attended the Guild public schools and then Marion County High School, where she graduated in 1933. She married John Thomas Hale Jr. on Sept. 23, 1938, and they had two children, Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" and Wendell Pope Hale. She was a member of Hale's Chapel United Methodist Church in Guild and was the Postmaster at the Guild post office for 28 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, J.T. Hale; son, Wendell Hale; sister, Anna Nell Curton; sisters-in-law, Frances H. Conner and Ethel H. Conner; brothers-in-law, Harvey, Ed and Fonzy Hale and Paul Brown.
She is survived by her devoted daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Andy Anderson, of Nashville; sisters-in-law, Nellie Hale Brown, of Guild, and Bertie Hale, of Manchester, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Jasper Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home on at 1 p.m. CST Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, with the Rev. Vernon Windom and the Rev. Paul Hopson officiating.
Interment will be in Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens in Jasper.
The family will gather with friends for visitation from 4-8 p.m. CST on Monday, Feb. 22, at Rogers Funeral Home in Jasper, Tenn.

RISING FAWN -- Kenneth Lee Hales, 65, passed away Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010.
He was a longtime resident of the New Salem Community on Lookout Mountain, he served in the U.S. Navy and retired from TVA.
Kenneth enjoyed operating ham radio, guns and was a member of New Salem Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred McSpadden Hales; and his parents, William and Delenia Hales.
Survivors include his son, David and wife, Stephanie Hales, son Allan Hales, all of Rising Fawn; two sisters, Phyllis Louise Hales and Sheila Hales, both of Chattanooga; two grandchildren, Devon Wolfe and Cassidy Perry.

CARTERSVILLE -- Millie Jane Holcomb, 77, passed away Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010.
She was the daughter of the late Jesse W. Collett and the late Mary Ellen Teague Collett.
Survivors include her son Randall Holcomb, of Canton, Ga.; and daughter, Janet Nally; her sister, Janett McDaniel, of LaFayette, Ga.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

James Holland
GAINESVILLE -- James "Jim" Hamilton Holland, 83, formerly of Ringgold, Ga., went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, in Limestone Heritage, Gainesville.
He was born in Catoosa County to the late James Hamilton and Lula Marie Brown Holland. He was a former employee of Tri-County Hospital, now known as Hutcheson Medical Center. He was also a former employee of W.L. Wilson and Sons Funeral Home in Fort Oglethorpe.
He had resided for the past 35 years in the Jefferson and Gainesville areas, where he had operated a Thrift Store in Athens, Ga.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Marie Nichols, Fannette Nichols, Rose Long, Sue Hullender; brothers, Burton, Bill and Ira Frank Holland, Roy, Harold and Bob Anderson, all formerly of Ringgold.
He is survived by his sister, Catherine Holland Gulledge, of Ringgold, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, and funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ralph Long and the Rev. Garland Hullender officiating.

He was born in Walker County to the late Arthur Lee Williams and Mildred Williams Jones. He also was preceded in death by his son, James Edward Williams; and brother, Joe Lee Williams.
Frank retired from Mayfield Dairy Farms after 40 years of service as a route salesman and was a member of Crawfish Masonic Lodge. He attended Cowboy Church in LaFayette.
