Gregory Alexander

Gregory Dion Alexander Sr., 45, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, in a Nashville hospital.

He was a 1982 graduate of Brainerd High School. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and was a graduate of Nashville Technical School.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Willie Claude and Henrietta Borders and Charles Alexander Sr.

Survivors: wife, Theareast Alexander; son, Gregory D. Alexander Jr.; mother, Shirley Alexander; father, Charles (Carolyn) Alexander Jr.; grandmother, Juanita Atkins; brothers, Victor, Tyrone, Demetrius and Toran Alexander; a host of aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m Tuesday, Feb. 23, in Chattanooga National Cemetery with Pastors Kevin Adams Sr. and Johnny Horne officiating.

The body will lie in state today after noon at Taylor Funeral Home.

Edward Cummings

Edward Cummings, 76, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, at his residence.

Funeral at 1 p.m. today at Olivet Baptist Church. Pastor Kevin Adams Sr. officiating.

Dr. Robert Giles Jr.

Dr. Robert H. Giles Jr., 95, of Signal Mountain, passed away on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010.

He was born Oct. 22, 1914, in Roanoke, Va., to the late Dr. Robert Harrison Giles Sr. and Lenora Forsyth Giles. He helped provide for his immediate and extended family during the Great Depression, an event that would help forge his goals and values.

Dr. Giles received his medical degree from University of Virginia in 1941 followed by his internship at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga. He was a staff physician at Campbell's Clinic from 1942 to 1944, prior to serving in the United States Naval Reserves from 1944 to 1946 as a medical officer in the WWII Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He served his residency at Erlanger Hospital as assistant then later as chief resident of obstetrics from 1946 to 1948. He had a private practice in Chattanooga with Dr. Charles Hooper from 1948 to 1988 and held memberships in a number of obstetric and gynecological societies and medical associations throughout his career.

A loving husband and father, Dr. Giles was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Bresnahan Giles.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Elizabeth G. (Gary) Flynn, Patricia F. Giles, Robert H. (Kimberly) Giles III, Katherine G. (Steve) Case and Charles S. "Smitty" (Marilyn) Giles; together with eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Dr. Giles was an occasional golfer but pursued his lifelong love of tennis as a member of Manker-Patten Tennis Club. He also enjoyed fishing and yearly trips to Steinhatchee, Fla., with other members of the medical community for speckled trout and redfish.

Visitation will be between the hours of 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, at Lane Funeral Home, 601 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga.

The funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church on Signal Mountain with the Rev. Kathryn Mathewson officiating.

Visitation also is one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Wednesday.

Burial will follow the service at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church or Chattanooga Area Food Bank.

Florence Love passed away Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, in a local health care facility.

James Nelson

James F. Nelson, 74, of Hixson, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010.

James was born in Jasper, Tenn., to the late Luther and Alice Brewer Nelson. James served our country during the Korean War and served in Vietnam twice. He was a retired master sergeant from the U.S. Army, where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal (Sixth Award), Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Bronze Star with 2D Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal with 2D Oak Leaf Cluster.

After his retirement from the military, James owned and operated Nelson Construction Co. He was a faithful member of Hixson United Methodist Church, the Sam McConnell Sunday School Class and served as a trustee. James was an avid golfer, and he loved to play with his wife and friends, which enhanced his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and nine siblings, Luther, Paul, Louis, Kenneth, Eugene and David Nelson, Elizabeth Middleton, Virginia Pettit and Margaret Isbill.

James is survived by his wife of 26 years, Beth Grant Nelson; two sons, Jim (Maura) Nelson, of Selma, Ala., and Mike (Judith) Nelson, of Soddy-Daisy; two daughters, Patty (Bobby) Hardegree, of Anniston, Ala., and Betty Johnson, of Birmingham, Ala.; two stepsons, Stan (Cindy) Leamon and Scott (Ellen) Leamon; brother, Lawrence (Shirley) Nelson, Bowden, Ga.; and a sister, Carolyn (Bo) Bohanan, of Anniston; grandchildren, J. Cole Nelson, Michael Nelson, Johnathon (Betsy) Brock, Jessica (Jason) Crow, Jeremy Johnson, Megan Leamon, Campbell and Laura Leamon; two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Madeline Crow; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Chattanooga for their love and care given to Mr. Nelson.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. today, Feb. 22, at the North Chapel.

Services for James will be held 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the North Chapel with the Rev. Randy Martin and the Rev. Steve Middleton officiating.

Burial will follow in National Cemetery.

Charlotte Louise Baker Penn, 78, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, in a local hospital.

She was a member of Greater Emmanuel Apostolic Church, where she served on the Mother's Board and the Missionary Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Judson and Ruby Baker; husband, Ervin Penn Sr.; brothers, Robert, Arrelius, Adrian and Samuel Baker.

Survivors: daughters, Roxanne Edwards, of Chattanooga, Earlene Malone, of Smyrna, Ga., Constance Penn, of Bessemer, Ala., Dorothy and Dorothea Penn, both of Chattanooga; sons, Floyd (Helena) Cook, of Newark, Del., Edwin (Michelle) Penn, of Detroit, Mich., Joseph (Dorothy) Penn, of Newport News, Va., Judson Penn, of Columbia, S.C., and Ervin Penn Jr., of Chattanooga; brother, James "J.W." Ruby Etter Stafford, 83, of Ooltewah, passed away Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at her home.

Rebecca Summey

Rebecca Darlene Summey, 54, of Chattanooga, departed this life Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010.

She was born in Fort Oglethorpe to the late Minis Dow and Nora Christine Johnson. She also was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy June Guzman; brother, Minis Lebron Johnson.

Rebecca retired from TVA after 18 years of service as a secretary and enjoyed writing and singing her own gospel music. She was a member of Fourth Avenue Church of God in Chattanooga.

Special thank you to Hospice of Chattanooga, Ann Summey, Kenneth Johnson, and Gala for their love and support during this difficult time.

Survivors include her loving husband, James Talley Summey, of Chattanooga; son, Kenneth D. (Tammy) Johnson, of Chattanooga; siblings, Glenda Diane Johnson, of Rossville, Emma Jean Gagnon, of Chattanooga, Timothy Dow Johnson, of Crystal River, Fla.; grandchildren, Amber Marie Johnson, Thomas James Thomas III; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Westerman

Mary Elizabeth Doutaz Westerman 95, a resident of Chattanooga for 45 years, died Friday Feb. 19, 2010, at a local health care center.

She was a faithful member of St. Stephen Catholic Church. Mary "Tince" Westerman was born in Louisville, Ky., and after obtaining her registered nursing degree from Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital in Louisville, she pursued a medical career which culminated in private-duty nursing for many of Chattanooga's leading families. She also supported her husband's Navy career of 30 years, moving the family every two years from Kentucky to Hawaii and stations in between.

Mrs. Westerman was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Edward; daughter, Suzanne Westerman Daugherty; parents, Maurice and Margaret Doutaz; and seven of eight siblings, the sole immediate family survivor being her sister, Rita Eicher of Louisville, Ky. She is also survived by one son, Michael and wife, Mary Davenport Westerman of Signal Mountain; four grandchildren; Edward M. Westerman Jr. of Nashville, John Graham Westerman of Christiansburg, Va., Laura Smith Chaplin of Fort Collins, Colo. and Anna Jane Smith of Austin, Texas; three great-grandchildren; Morgan Chaplin, Ed Chaplin, and Thomas Westerman along with a multitude of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staffs at the Alexian Health Care Center and Carestone Assisted Living for their compassionate care of our mother over the last seven years.

Visitation will be held prior to 11:15 a.m. funeral services at the Alexian chapel, Signal Mountain, on Wednesday Feb. 24.

Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Ralph Wilson

Ralph Wilson, 78, of Ooltewah, passed away Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, after a lengthy and hard fought illness.

A lifelong resident of the Ooltewah area, he was the son of the late R.E. (Bob) and Ada Leamon Wilson and was also preceded in death by six brothers, Raymond, Eugene, E.W. (Dub), Roy, Charles and Clyde Wilson; three sisters, Dorothy McCallie, Margaret Smith and Sue Knight. He was a retired construction equipment operator from J.M. Foster Construction Company at the Bowater Plant.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Wilson; step-son, Larry Sinor, Rogersville, Tenn.; three step-daughters, Joyce Grivas, Wildwood, Ga., Joan Rainwater, Alexandria, Va. and Karen Sue Smith, Vienna, Va.; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sister, Rita Bennett, Ooltewah; 18 nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be private.

Interment will be in Old McDonald Cemetery.

DUNLAP - Virgil Howard Beavert, 84, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010.

He was a retired carpenter and farmer. He was a longtime member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and a charter member of Mt. Airy Baptist Church. He was a member of Dunlap Masonic Lodge 693 F&AM for 57 years, Bledsoe County Court, 19 years, Bledsoe County Election Commission, 23 years.

Mr. Beavert was preceded in death by parents, Alfred and Mamie Minton Beavert; brothers, Thomas Beavert and Frank Beavert.

Frances Hale

GUILD - Frances Myers Hale, 90, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010 at Windlands Assisted Living in Nashville.

One of two daughters born to the late George and Bertie Mae Pope Myers, she lived most of her life in Guild, where she attended the Guild public schools and then Marion County High School where she graduated in 1933. She married John Thomas Hale Jr. on Sep. 23, 1938, and they had two children, Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" and Wendell Pope Hale. She was a member of Hale's Chapel United Methodist Church in Guild and was the Postmaster at the Guild post office for 28 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, J.T. Hale; son, Wendell Hale; sister, Anna Nell Curton; sisters-in-law, Frances H. Conner and Ethel H. Conner; brothers-in-law, Harvey, Ed and Fonzy Hale and Paul Brown.

She is survived by her devoted daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Andy Anderson, of Nashville; sisters-in-law, Nellie Hale Brown of Guild and Bertie Hale, of Manchester, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Jasper Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010 at 1 p.m. CST, with Rev. Vernon Windom and Rev. Paul Hopson officiating.

Interment will be in Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens in Jasper.

The family will gather with friends for visitation today, Feb. 22 from 4-8 p.m. CST at Rogers Funeral Home in Jasper.

Joe Hatfield

PIKEVILLA - Joe T."Big Joe" Hatfield, 82, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010.

Joe was of the Baptist Faith. He served during WWII in the U. S. Navy aboard the cruiser USS Topeka. After the Navy, he returned home and finished High School. His senior year in High School he was the first from Bledsoe County to be selected for the All State Football Team. His senior year as running back he scored 39 touchdowns. In the Spring of 1947, he went to work for SVEC and worked his way up through the rank. Forty-five years later he retired as district manager. Oct. 1949, he married the late Dorothy Clark and were married for sixty years.

Survivors include daughter Mary Ellen Hatfield, Pikeville; son Joe (Peggy) T. Hatfield,

Jr., Douglasville, GA.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sisters Minnie Lee Curtis, Pikeville; Ann Green, Whitwell; numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. CST with burial in Pikeville Cemetery. Brothers Albert Roberts and Mitchell Wilson will be officiating.

Robert Meeks

COALMONT - Robert K. Meeks, 63, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010.

He was a US Army veteran, member of the Coalmont United Methodist Church, Sewanee Lodge #405 F&AM, Scottish Rite Bodies of Chattanooga and the Alhambra Shrine. He worked 29 years at Wheland Foundry before being elected Sheriff of Grundy County in 1994 serving for 11 years retiring only because of declining health. He was instrumental in establishing the Meth Task Force. He also served on the Coalmont City Commission and the Coalmont Volunteer Fire Dept.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Mildred Brown Meeks; brother, Ronnie Meeks; sisters, Donna Lou Irvin and Barbara Jean Burrows.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon "Sherry" Layne Meeks; son, Ryan (Heather) Meeks, Sequatchie, Tenn.; daughter, Lisa (Troy) Dent, Palmer, Tenn.; sister, Patsy (Ricky) McGinnis, Coalmont; grandchildren, Sierra, Kanai, Spencer, Chelsy; step-grandchildren, Michael and Stephanie.

RINGGOLD - Betty Sue Anderson, 61, passed away Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010.

She was born to the late Eugene and Lennie Smith Anderson on Sept. 19, 1948, in Chattanooga. She attended Catoosa Tabernacle, and the Anchor of Chickamauga. Betty loved music and dancing.

She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Johnny and Victor Anderson.

Survivors include her sisters and brothers-in-law, Evelyn and Harvey Ellis, of Ooltewah, and Marilyn and Lester Barnes, of Ringgold; special caretaker, Sue Lane, of Rossville; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Jackie Swanson officiating.

Interment will follow in Lakewood Memory Gardens South.

Yvonne Bolinger

ROSSVILLE - Yvonne McGee Bolinger, 77, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, with her husband, two children, and daughter-in-law by her side.

Originally from Fyffe,Ala., Yvonne spent the last 50 years residing in the same home in Georgia. She was a hard worker with an excellent work ethic. Until her long-term illness kept her mainly confined to her home, she was high-spirited and very energetic. Yvonne was especially proud of her fine McGee heritage (and spoke often of it) and of her husband, children, and grandchildren. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She will be missed and will remain cherished in the hearts of all who loved her.

She was preceded in death by her loving parents; eight of eleven siblings; and her greatly loved son-in-law, Johnny Boles.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 59 years, Bermon; her beloved children, Shelia and Jerry; her daughter-in-law, Darlene; her adored granddaughters, Kinsey and Taylor Brooke; her grandson-in-law, Scott Steere; her brother, Doyce McGee; two sisters, Idelle Spears and Jean Benefield, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Lakewood Memory Gardens South.

He was a lifelong resident of Catoosa County and was of the Protestant faith. Mr. Hullender was retired from Standard-Coosa-Thatcher after 33 years of service and had worked with Southern Industrial Fabric for nine years.

Survivors are his loving wife of 37 years, Barbara Hullender; son, Robert Hullender, Ringgold; brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Bonnie Thomas, Aragon, Ga., Jack and Ada Gregory, Palmdale, Calif.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lakewood Memory Gardens, South with the Rev. Jack Sexton officiating.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Davey Daniel and wife, and staff, Dr. Bill Warren, Dr. Jay Jolly and Clay Evans Cancer Center.
