Officials in Memphis cracking down on drag racing

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Officials in Memphis are cracking down on drag racing in city streets.

Last weekend nearly two dozen vehicles were seized at a popular street racing spot.

Mayor A C Wharton said enforcement will be stepped up "all over this town."

According to WMC-TV, some people believe the closure of Memphis Motorsports Park has prompted some racers to take to the streets.

Police issued 18 misdemeanor citations Saturday night, recovered a stolen car and towed 20 others.

In Chattanooga last month, police said they learned about drag races in the city through the Internet, staked out the scene and made four arrests. Officers said racers bragged about their cars and arranged races near Hamilton Place Mall late at night.
