Mabel Brown

Mabel Leslie Brown, 87, passed away Monday, Dec. 28, 2009.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Franklin Leslie and Harry Leslie; husband, Jim Brown Jr.; sisters, Corine Howard, Birdie Ponds, and Lucinda Vance; brothers, George Leslie and Alvin Leslie; son, Willie Brown and George Lee Brown Sr.; granddaughter, Kinetura Brown; great-grandson, Quintarius Vaughn.

She leaves to cherish her memory five children, Vera Brown, Cardean Brown, Jim (Sarah) Brown III, Gwendolyn Harris and Annette (James) Mathis, all of Chattanooga; devoted granddaughter, Cassandra Brown McKeldin, of Atlanta; 22 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Lizzie Mae Garth; two daughters-in-law, Ethel Brown and Carol Brown.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, in the funeral home chapel.

Interment: Highland Memorial Gardens.

Virginia Brown

Virginia Brown, 88, of Chattanooga, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009.

Mrs. Brown was born in Chattanooga, in 1921 to the late Ray "Styx" and Mary VanDerCammen. She was a graduate of Central High School and McKenzie Business School and was employed at Standard Coosa Thatcher for many years. She was also a member of Jones Memorial United Methodist Church where she was involved for many years in various areas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles James Brown.

Survivors include her daughters, Nancy (Jim) Hudson and Carol (Gary) Bradford; grandchildren, Jeff English, Derek (Becky Cope) English, Nick (Dr. Elizabeth) Bradford, Jeremy and Joel Bradford; and great-granddaughter, Eason English and Abby Tackett.

Memorial donations may be made to Jones Memorial UMC, Hospice of Chattanooga, or the American Alzheimer's Association.

Graveside services will be private.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at Jones Memorial UMC, 4131 Ringgold Road, Chattanooga, TN 37412, with Rev. Lee Byrd and Dr. J. David Tabor officiating, with visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.

Frances Bryant

Frances Louise Hennessee Bryant, 91, of Chattanooga, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Bryant owned and operated Cleveland Express with her husband Sonville Isaac "S.I." Bryant until their retirement. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Cleveland where she taught Sunday School Class for over 15 years and served on the building committee when the church built a new facility.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Clarence and Minnie Lee Morgan Hennessee; husband, S.I. Bryant; brother, Raymond Hennessee; sisters, Minnie Lee Bowman Billingsley, Ruth Pyle, and Edith Graham.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Bryant Reilly, Chattanooga; son, Steven Isaac Bryant and wife, Carolyn, Wichita, Kan.; grandchildren, Brian David Reilly, Nashville; Kelly Reilly Bishop and husband Collins, Chattanooga TN; David I. Bryant and wife Emily Grace, Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Genevieve DeHoog officiating.

Interment will follow in Hilcrest Memorial Gardens in Cleveland, Tenn.

Shirley Bryant

Shirley Jean Bryant, 66, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, in a local health care facility.

She was a member of the Mountain View Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

She was preceded in death by her father, Berry Mays; mother, Ola Hale; sisters, Margaret Duncan and Lula Mae Phinazee.

Survivors: husband, LaDonald Bryant Sr.; sons, LaDonald Bryant Jr. of Chattanooga, Michael (Karen) Bryant, of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Kelley (Ivory) Bryant, of Memphis; grandchildren, Sara LaDonna Bryant of Chattanooga, Christine (Brandon) Richards and David Bryant, both of Lawrenceville, Ga.; several other relatives and a host of friends.

Carolyn Byars, 61, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, in a local hospital.

Mary Helen Reavely Carringer, 85, went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at home.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Richard Reavely Sr. and George Carringer; son, Richard Reavely Jr; father and mother, Lark and Viola Fuller.

She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Wendell and Linda Reavely, of Halls; daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Randy Headrick, of Friendsville; brother and sister-in-law Harold and Mary Fuller; grandchildren, Richard Fannin, Denny Fannin, Christopher Reavely and Michael Reavely; great-granddaughter, Mindy Fannin; stepgrandchildren, Tammy Sharp, Tina Bean, Johnny Hatmaker; special friend, Betty Best.

Robert Harold "Bobby" Cavitt Jr., 30, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at his home.

He was preceded in death by his father; Robert Cavitt Sr.; brother, Eric Cavitt.

Mildred Clayton

Mildred Penny Clayton, 86, of Soddy-Daisy, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009.

Ms. Clayton retired from the Hamilton County Nursing Home. She attended Miracle Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Doyle Clayton Sr.; sons, Raymond Doyle Clayton II, Johnny Ray Clayton; brother, Roy Penny; and two sisters, Lela Cranmore and Lola Beene.

She is survived by her son, James Robert Clayton; two daughters, Brenda (Jerry) Redden, Marina Walker; sister, Dorothy Morrison; 10 grandchildren, Sherry, Raymond III, Erik, Aaron, Jennifer, Melissa, Charlie, P.J., Natasha and Celeste; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be noon Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home with Brother Wayne Lewis and Brother Lavonne Powell officiating.

Burial will follow in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

John Cooper

John Andrews "Dube" Cooper, 59, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009.

A career banker and human resources manager, Mr. Cooper was an avid servant at his church. He was a member of the board of Deacons, the Finance Committee and the Family Life Service Center. In the Greater Chattanooga community, he was active in the Big Brothers, Big Sisters Organization, the Boys and Girls Club and numerous other civic organizations.

He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. William Boyd Cooper; an infant brother, Willie B. Cooper; and special nephew, Mr. Ritchie A. Cooper.

Those who will always love him and cherish very special memories are his adoring daughter, Ms. Eolia John (E.J.) Sylvia Couch, 73, of Chattanooga, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009.

Paul Grier Jr.

Paul "Mr. Paul" Grier Jr., formerly of Chattanooga, departed this life Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009.

He is surived by local relatives, his sister, Flossie Armour; nephews, Rufus Armour Jr. and Kenneth Armour.

Margaret Haemsch

Margaret Wall Haemsch, 90 of Chattanooga, died Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at Memorial Hospital, Chattanooga.

She was a native of Coeburn, Va., daughter of the late James B. Wall Sr. and Mary Michael Wall. Margaret was a banker and longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Johnson City. She was a member and officer of the Women of the Church at First Presbyterian Church for 70 years. Margaret had also been a member of the Dogwood Garden Club, the Pilot Club and the Monday Club Auxiliary.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard "Dick" Haemsch; two brothers, James B. and William L. Wall and a sister, Mabel O'Dell.

Survivors include: a son and daughter-in-law, Richard "Buddy" and Charlotte Haemsch, of Chattanooga; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Peter Henry, of Columbia, Md.; three grandchildren, Matthew Haemsch, of Chattanooga, Kimberly Range Truesdale and her husband Scott, of Arlington, Va., and Allison Lyle Range, of Arlington, Va.; two nieces, Linda and Jim McCoy, of Kingsport and Sylvia and Allen Stephens, of Florida.

A funeral service is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church, under the direction of Rev. Louis Imsande.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until time of service at 2:30 p.m.

A committal service and burial will follow the funeral service in Monte Vista Memorial Park.

William Lockerby

William H. Lockerby, 64, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009.

Mr. Lockerby was the son of the late Herbert and Mae Lockerby.

A Chattanooga native, born June 5, 1945, he was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, where he served on the visitation committee, was a videographer, and coached the women's softball team.

Mr. Lockerby graduated in the class of 1963 from East Ridge High School and is an alumnus of Tennessee Wesleyan College, where he served as SGA President.

Mr. Lockerby served as the dedicated principal of Senter School for 34 years until its closing in 2007. He had previously taught history and coached numerous sports at Senter School. He had an enthusiasm for teaching and being involved in the lives of children and their families. Above all else, Mr. Lockerby's passion was his love for Jesus Christ, his family and friends.

Mr. Lockerby is survived by his wife of 30 years, Nikki Bowman Lockerby; children, Charlie (Jennifer) Lockerby, Teddy (Andrea) Lockerby, Katie (Jimmy) Goss and Abby Lockerby; three grandchildren, Clark, Camden and Mary; mother-in-law, Peggye Bowman; brother, Rev. Charles (Shirley) Lockerby; and his special granddogs. He also is survived by several brothers and sisters-in-law, Greg and Wendy Bowman, Wes and Rebekah Bowman, Allyson Bowman, as well as cousins, nieces, nephews, and many close friends and loved ones.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at Christ United Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Flynn and Rev. David Hall officiating. Mr. Lockerby will lie in state at the Church one hour prior to the service.

Interment following at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Herschel Sims

Herschel Boville Sims, 96, of Collegedale, died on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009.

He was a resident of Collegedale since 1960. Herschel was a devoted Christian and member of McDonald Road Seventh-day Adventist Church. He was a very loving and caring person to his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Eloise Sims, to whom he was married to for over 50 years; and their son, Herschel Ray Sims.

Survivors include his two grandsons, Tony Ray (Kathleen) Sims and Christopher Dean Sims; two great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandson.

A memorial service will be held in Grand Prairie, Texas, at a later date. There will be no visitation or services locally.

Ronald Tanner

Ronald L Tanner, 62, of Chattanooga, a leader in the Construction Community, died on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at home, after a year-long battle with Non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

The life of this generous, forthright, hardworking, caring, kind and loving man will be celebrated at Grace Episcopal Church, 20 Belvoir Ave., on Saturday, Jan. 2. Visitation will be in the Barth Room from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the service to follow.

Ron will always be remembered for doing more for others than for himself.

Sharon Thorn

Sharon Elizabeth Foreman Thorn, 53, beloved wife, mother and friend, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, after succumbing to injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Atlanta on Dec. 18.

Her loved ones were by her bedside for the final moments, and she left this world peacefully, surrounded by love and prayers.

Sharon was born in Knoxville, on March 18, 1956 and lived much of her life in Nashville and Chattanooga. More recently, she also spent time in Carrolton, Ga., with her loving husband, Stuart Thorn, president and CEO of Southwire. The family also has a home in Greenport, N.Y., where they spent many happy summers by the sea, and she will eventually be laid to rest there.

Sharon will be remembered for her career as a talented songwriter who was loved by the Nashville music community. She captivated us all with

her infectious good humor, loving nature, and dedication to her friends and family.

Her most important legacy is the family she leaves behind. She is survived by her husband Stuart Thorn; their six children, Meghan, Matthew, and Meredith McGinnis and Alex, Jason and Tyler Thorn; two grandchildren, Madison and Nadia McGinnis; her mother, Francis Durham Foreman; and two sisters, Janet Green and Sandy Burkett.

A memorial service will be held this at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4, at Chattanooga Funeral Home Crematory & Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37373, with a reception to follow at the family's home.

She was a deeply loving wife and mother and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She was a member of Chattanooga Valley Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her mother, Judy Smith Carter; grandparents, Cleve and Violet Smith.

Rev. Gene Leroy Woodward Sr., of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at a local health care facility.

He was a Baptist Preacher at Cross Roads Baptist Church and other area churches. Gene loved his family, and everyone he came in contact with. He was a humanitarian who always gave of himself, whether it was with humor or prayer. He will be missed by the staff and residence at Soddy-Daisy Health Care where he touched so many lives

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Woodward; son, Gene "G.L." Woodward Jr.

He is survived by his son, Wendell Woodward, of Soddy-Daisy; daughter, Marcia Woodward Taylor, of Carolton, Ga.; daughter-in-law, Sabine Woodward, of Soddy-Daisy; brother, R.V. "Cotton" Woodward, of Soddy-Daisy; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

MANCHESTER - Ricky A. Hobbs, 34, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009.

He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at Tullahoma.

He is survived by his wife, Shellon Barrett Hobbs; sons, Calin, Alex and Eli; daughters, Kaydee and MaKenna; parents, Tommy and Sharon Hobbs; brothers, Dennis (Mary), Carl (Michelle) and Christopher (Sue) Hobbs; grandmother, Alice Norman.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. CST Saturday at Mormon Church in Altamont with Bishop Aaron Barren and Elder Charlie Barrett officiating with burial to follow in Fults Cemetery.

ATHENS - Annette Hooper, 50, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Service 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, in South Chapel, with visitation 6 to 8 p.m. prior.

Bill Johnston

JASPER - William Lynn "Bill" Johnston, 65, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, in a Chattanooga hospital.

Bill was born and raised in Iowa. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Vietnam War. Following his discharge from the Air Force, Bill spent his entire adult life working in the restaurant business. He retired from Pizza Hut after 27 years of service as an area manager and was the former owner of Jasper BBQ.

He was a member of Grace Baptist Church in South Pittsburg.

Bill was preceded in death by his father, Basil Johnston; mother and stepfather, Hazel Arlene Annis and E.A. Showalter; and a brother, Russel Showalter.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Johnston; children, Josh Cannon, Zach and Colleen Fitz-Gerald; two grandchildren, Calli and Rylee Schneider; brothers, Bruce (Karen) Showalter, Kenny Showalter, Gary Johnston; and a sister Marsha George.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. CST Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Case officiating.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 3-7 p.m. CST Saturday and one hour prior to the service on Sunday at the funeral home.

A graveside service and internment will be held at 1 p.m. CST Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.

Pallbearers will be Jasper Jones, Ciciel Westmoreland, Jim Henry, Bo Hicks and Garry Stinnett.

WHITWELL - Casey David Kilgore, 76, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, in Parkridge Hospital.

He was a member of Layne's Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Faytte and Lennie Kilgore; grandson, John David Kilgore; brothers Harvey, Gene, Herman and Luther Kilgore.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy Kilgore; son, Tim (Renea) Kilgore, Whitwell; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Martha McCurry, Whitwell; several nieces and nephews; three special nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. CST Sunday at Layne's Chapel Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Ron Namanny and Rev. Patrick Holcomb officiating.

Burial will be in Layne's Chapel Cemetery.

DAYTON - Marvin Wayne Webb II, 39, died at his home Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009.

He was a member of Dayton Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Webb Sr.

Harry Wilkerson

FRIENDSVILLE - Harry "Cornbread" Wilkerson, an avid fisherman and hunter, lost his 25-year battle with cancer and diabetes at his home in Friendsville, Tenn., on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009.

He was 70 years old. Harry graduated from Lenoir City High School where he lettered in 3 sports for four years of high school. He was a member of the 1958 Tennessee State Champion Basketball Team. Harry graduated with a BS degree in education and a Master of Arts Degree from Tennessee Tech. While there he played football, tennis and was a member of the T Club. His first teaching and coaching job was at Copper Basin High in Copper Hill, Tenn. Harry finished his teaching and coaching at McMinn County High School in Athens, Tenn. He was a member of the Lenoir City Hall of Fame and several fishing organizations.

Preceded in death by his parents, Nina and Carson Wilkerson; and a sister, Dot, who died of a brain tumor at the age of 8.

Harry is survived by his wife of 47 years, Gayle; two sons, Mike, of Asheboro, N.C., and Derrick (Tammy) and the light of his life, granddaughter Miranda, all of North Pole, Alaska; sister, Jane (Noah) Johnson, of Andrews, N.C.; brother, Bobby (Agnes) Wilkerson, of Lenoir City; brother-in-law, Mike Henry of Henderson, Nev.; nephews, Stan Johnson, Steve (Tammy) Johnson, all of Andrews, N.C., and Tim Wilkerson of Kingston; niece, Missy (Joe) Layne, of Kingston; four great-nieces, Anna Beth and Ellie Layne both of Kingston, Amber (Eric) Bathe, Candice (Adam) Bradley, all of Andrews, N.C.; aunts, Novella Richardson, of Lenoir City and Rachel Sheldon, of Hayesville, N.C.; great-nephew, Trevor Johnson, of Clyde, N.C.; long time friend, Dink Adams and his family of Powell.

Richard Brite

CHICKAMAUGA - Richard Brite, 55, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009.

He was born in Knoxville, but has lived in the North Georgia area for the last 40 years and was a member of Grand Center Baptist Church. He was previously employed with Yates Bleachery for more than 10 years and more recently as a Security Guard with U.S. Associates for the last three years. He also was a member of Rossville Masonic Lodge #397 F&AM and was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Elizabeth Brite.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene Brite, of Chickamauga; father, Jerry Brite, of Rossville; daughter, Connie Lynn Brite, of Chickamauga; three brothers, Jerry Brite Jr., of Red Bank, Kenneth D. Brite, of Rossville, and Larry R. Brite, of Ringgold, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, in the J. Avery Bryan Chapel with Brother Jeremy Neal officiating.

TRION - Betty Hyden Garner, 84, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, in a Rome hospital.

A lifetime resident of Chattooga County, Ga. She was born in Trion on Dec. 30, 1925 to the late George D. and Grace Lee McBride Erwin.

Mrs. Garner was a member of Trion United Methodist Church, a homemaker, former Nurse, and for several years an entrepreneur.

She was preceded in death by first husband, Dr. William U. Hyden on Feb. 4, 1987.

Surviving are husband, Dr. James S. Garner; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Lee Hyden Turner and John; son, William U. "Bill" Hyden Jr.; grandchildren, Wil Hyden and Tisch Colcock, of Okatie, S.C., Joseph and Christy Hyden, of Port Orange, Fla., Ross and Saisha Camp, of Trion; great-grandchildren, Alyssa Anne Hyden and Easton Avery Hyden Camp; stepchildren and grandchildren, Pope and Fran Jordan Family, Jim (deceased) and Cheryl Garner Family, John and Bobann Garner Family, Keith and Beth Tibboel Family.

RINGGOLD - Malinda Fay Mathis, 62, departed this life Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009.

She was born in Chickamauga, Ga., to the late Mary Wallin Hollingsworth, and was preceded in death by her siblings, Stanley and James Hollingsworth, Mary Sue Medford, and was a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Ringgold.

Survivors include her husband, Loyde Mathis, of Ringgold; children, Dwight (Deanise) Bryson, of Higdon, Ala.. Robert Bryson, of Ringgold, Tony (Vicki) Bryson, of Hixson, Ricky (Donna) Mathis, of Ringgold; brothers, Lamar Hollingsworth, of Louisville, Ky., Steve Hollingsworth, of Ringgold; grandchildren, Brandon, Tequila, Joey, Whitney; and several nieces and nephews.

HENAGAR - Jesse Paul Eargle, 81, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Eargle was a Korean War veteran serving in the Marines and had driven a school bus in Columbus, Ga and a Council on Aging bus in Dekalb, County.

Survivors include, wife of 46 years, Ethel Parham Eargle; daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Harry Shaw, Fort Payne, Teresa and Guy Barnett, Henagar; daughter, Felicia Kidd, Henagar; son, John Miller, Portland, Ore.; son and daughter-in-law, David and Brenda Ogle, Columbus, Ga.; brothers, Donald Eargle, Portland, Ore., Bill Eargle, Columbus, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
