Gary M. Adkins, 60, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, in a local hospital.

Milton Alterman

Milton Alterman, 88, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at his residence.

He was a veteran of Army having served in WWII.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Reba; and a daughter, Harriett Polite.

He is survived by his son, Mark Alterman and wife, Dee Dee; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Betty Jean Burton

Betty Jean Burton, of Chattanooga, died Wednesday Dec. 30, 2009, in a local hospital.

She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and a longtime employee of the T.H. Payne Co. Mrs. Burton was a member of the Catoosa Baptist Tabernacle.

Mrs. Burton was preceded in death by her parents, John Wesley and Maude Luella Green Wilbanks; and a son, Gilbert Rue.

Survivors are her husband, Paul Burton; children, Michael Rue, Canton, Ga., Gary Rue and Larry Rue, of Fort Worth Texas, Terri Lonas, of Cleveland, Tenn.; brother, Paul W. Wilbanks; sister, June Blakley; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Howard Howell officiating.

Interment will be in National Cemetery.

Steven Eugene Davis, 50, of Chattanooga, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009.

Julie Feagans

Julie Pogue Feagans, 46, passed from this life peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, surrounded by her loving family.

She had courageously battled cancer for almost four years.

She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, having attended St. Nicholas and Boyd-Buchanan schools before graduating from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 1985 with a B.S. degree in education.

Julie taught school in the Hamilton County Department of Education at Ridgedale Elementary, Lookout Valley Elementary and Westview Elementary. She then taught kindergarten at St. Nicholas School until her retirement in 2006. She held membership in the Nancy Ward Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Julie was an outstanding wife and mother, always in attendance at her sons sporting events, programs, recitals, etc. She and her husband, Mark, made quite a team in numerous sports, him coaching and she being the "team Mom."

She was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin Stone Pogue; and grandparents, Dr. Clyde and Pearl Stone, and Luke and Mollie Pogue.

Julie is survived by her husband, D. Mark Feagans; sons, Blake Cameron Feagans and Jack Harrison Feagans, of Chattanooga; parents, Hays and Evelyn Pogue; sister, Nancy Pogue Tyler, of Chattanooga; and brother, Richard "Rick" Hays Pogue, of Bradenton, Fla.; mother and father-in-law, H.W. "Dub" and Barbara Feagans; sister-in-law, Allyson Feagans Millican and husband, Brian, of Dalton, Ga.; several nieces and nephews, Jessica Pogue Porrata and husband, Gabe, of Tampa, Fla., Tyler Pogue, of Bradenton, Fla., Joshua and Rachel Tyler, of Chattanooga, and Katherine Grace and Claire Elizabeth Millican, of Dalton, Ga.; cousins, Janice Pogue and Luke Pogue, of Chattanooga, and Mimi Freedman, of California.

The family expresses our most sincere gratitude to Dr. Ted Arrowsmith, Chattanooga, and Dr. Jagasia at Vanderbilt Medical Center Nashville, Memorial Hospital, and Hospice of Chattanooga for their excellent and compassionate care during Julie's long illness.

Larry Gragg

Larry Russell Gragg, 67, of Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 1, 2010.

Mr. Gragg was born in Clayton, Ga., to Jable and Lucy Gragg. He was a member of Silverdale Baptist Church. Larry was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in Vietnam, he enjoyed flying, parachuting and enjoyed his family most of all. He was a wonderful husband, proud father and even prouder "Pop Pop." He was a member of the Chattanooga Runners Club and an avid runner.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Gragg; daughter and son-in-law, Gretchen (Doug) King; granddaughter, Savannah King, all of Chattanooga; sister, Barbara Jane (Charles) Henson, Morganton, N.C.; one niece and one nephew.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Tony Walliser officiating.

Susan Hayes

Susan Roberts Hayes, 55, of Ooltewah, passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at her residence.

Susan was a member of Collegedale Community Seventh-day Adventist Church and was a graduate of Collegedale Academy in 1972, also from SAU Nursing Program in 1975. She was employed with Southern Adventist University as a nurse.

She was preceded in death by her father, Lamar "Pete" Roberts.

Susan was a gentle, loving, caring daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

She lived her life in loving service to those around her. Her fun-loving personality gave the family a treasure box of memories. Her commitment to and love for God was obvious to all those who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by her husband, Tom Hayes, Ooltewah; three sons, Todd Hayes, Chico, Calif., Brad Hayes, Nashville, Matthew Hayes, Orlando, Fla.; mother, Nellie Jo Greek Roberts; four grandchildren, Tytus Hayes, Siena Hayes, Cole Hayes, Penelope Susan Hayes.

Carlos L. Keyes, 72, of Hixson, passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at Memorial North Park Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Keyes; mother, Ellie Ashburn Keyes; and brother, Nolon Keyes.

The Rev. Frank Ladner, of Hixson, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010.

Irene McGowan

Irene P. McGowan, 86, of Hixson, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at a local hospital.

Born in Pittsburg, Ga., to the late John and Mary Boyd, she had lived here for 63 years. She was a resident of Life Care of Missionary Ridge and was a member of Lake Hills Church of God.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Richard; son, Ronnie; brothers, Grady, Ralph and Alfred Boyd.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Tom Meroney, Hixson; son, David McGowan, Chattanooga; grandson, Shawn Edmonds, Chattanooga; sisters, Estelle Lockwood, Dayton, Ohio; Betty Higdon, Red Bank, and Elizabeth (Beth) Fitzgerald, Rossville; brother, Ben Boyd, Tampa, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.

Thelma Elaine Nail, 57, of Dunlap, Tenn., died Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, in a local hospital.

She had been a member of Ridgecrest Baptist (now One Accord) for many years and taught Sunday school and Kids in Action.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister and grandmother.

She is survived by her spouse of 37 years, William Douglas Nail; daughters, Seretha (Phillip) Oliver, Renea (Aaron) Berlinger, Kim (Jeff) Davis, Angie (Matt) Smith, Misty Nail-Dalton, Colette Daniel, Connie (Tony) Lewis and Cathy (Johnny) Smith; sister, Shelia Melton; brother, Jerry Blancet; aunts, Aladine Pruitt, Geraldine Palmer and MaryEllen Higdon; 30 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Chico Vandergriff.

Bill Neal Jr.

William "Bill" Hayden Sparks Neal Jr., 82, of Signal Mountain, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at a local hospital.

Bill worked for Roper Corp. for 44 years, retiring in 1992. Bill was of the Church of God faith, attending Lone Oak Church of God on Signal Mountain. Bill enjoyed working in the yard and in his garden and loved spending time with his family and a good game of golf.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sparks and Lorena Neal; brothers, James Neal, Freddie Neal, Raymond Neal, Frankie Neal and William Neal; sisters, Almeda Chadwick.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Pauline Alice Whitmire Neal; children, Sharon (Larry) Ramsey, Ronnie (Linda) Neal, Elaine Neal, Freida (James) Baggett; eight grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; sisters, Amy Morrison, Nancy Hicks and Wanda Faye Greene, and many nieces, nephews and other family.

Lila Penney

Lila Jean Penney, 82, of Chattanooga, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010.

A Chattanooga native, she was a graduate of McKenzie College and was retired from the city of Chattanooga, where she was a computer programmer.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Sherman Penney; son, Steve Penney; parents, George and Frankie Talley McBrien.

Surviving are her daughters, Linda James, of Harrison, and Joy Penney, of Soddy-Daisy; son, Clayton Penney, of Sale Creek; grandchildren, Chase Cochran, Chelsea Penney, Curtis Penney; sister, Betty Baltimore, of Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, in the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. Lloyd Harvill officiating.

Interment will follow in Simpson-McBrien Cemetery, Chattanooga.

Rev. Alfred Pratt

The Rev. Alfred Colon Pratt, 93, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday morning, Jan. 3, 2010.

He was a graduate of Moody Bible Institute and a missionary with Continental Baptist Missions for 60 years. Alfred moved to Chattanooga in 2001 and was an elder at Kelly's Ferry Community Church.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, JaNeta Butler Pratt; his grandchildren, David Marske and Ginger Wood; his parents; and three siblings.

Mr. Pratt is survived by his children, Sandra (Ken) Marske, Sharon (Tim) Davidson and Minnie Wood, of Wisconsin, and John (Jill) Pratt, of Chattanooga; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Milford (Nadine) Pratt and George Pratt, of Michigan.

The celebration of Mr. Pratt's homegoing will take place at Kelly's Ferry Community Church at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, with his son, Pastor John Pratt, officiating.

Duncan Riddle

Duncan Riddle, 86, of Sarasota, Fla., died on Jan. 1, 2010, at the home of his daughter in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

He was born on Signal Mountain, and came to St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1951, then Sarasota, Fla., in 1963, as chief appraiser of Sarasota (Coast) Federal Savings and Loan Association.

He received an architectural engineering degree from Washington University, St. Louis, Mo., and was a member of the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 4th Marine Division, 1942-1945, in the invasion of the islands of Roi-Namur, Saipan and Tinian.

He was a member of the Church of the Redeemer, Sarasota.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joanna Seals Riddle; mother, Martha Thomas Riddle; and father, Deems S. Riddle; sister, Martha R. Mathews; brothers, Deems S. Riddle Jr., John T. Riddle, all of Chattanooga.

He is survived by son, Duncan Wilson Riddle, of Lexington, Ky.; daughter, Martha R. (Rick) Canada, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; six grandchildren; nephews, John T. Riddle Jr., Deems S. Riddle; and sister-in-law, Dorothy T. Riddle, all of Chattanooga.

Services will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Murfreesboro, Tenn., at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, with inurnment in St. Francis' Garden, Church of the Redeemer at a later date.

Rick Scarborough Sr.

John Richard "Rick" Scarborough Sr., 61, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, in a local hospital.

He was a member of Brainerd Presbyterian Church, teacher of the Basic Theology Class, member of the choir, deacon, elder, trustee and past moderator of the Southeast Presbytery. Rick was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a graduate of Brainerd High School, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and the University of Tennessee Law School. He had been a local attorney for 30 years and was currently a partner with the firm of Scarborough, Fulton & Glass P.C. He was a member of the East Ridge Kiwanis Club, a former lieutenant governor for Division 3 (Kentucky/Tennessee), member of the Chattanooga and Tennessee bar associations and Estate Planning Council.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Glynn and Mary Scarborough.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Linda Scarborough; two sons, John R. "Rick" Scarborough Jr. and his wife, Viki, of Chattanooga, and Mike Scarborough, of Santa Barbara, Calif.; grandchildren, John R. Scarborough III and William L. Scarborough, of Chattanooga; sisters-in-law, Peggy (Bob) Wade, of East Ridge, Susan (Mike) Holmes, of Dumont, Colo., and Judy (Jim) Coleman, of Melbourne, Fla.; three nieces; and three nephews.

Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday at Brainerd Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jonathan Schwartz and the Rev. Ronald Ragon officiating.

Ralph Swain Jr., 59, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at his residence.

He served his country in the United States Army for four years. He resided in Omaha, Neb., for 27 years and was of the Christian faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Juanita Swain Sr.; grandparents, Lucille Swain and Helen Hawkins.

Survivors include son, Bryson Woodward, of Omaha, Neb.; sister, Brenda (Garnett) Hubbard; brother, Michael Swain, both of Chattanooga; nieces, Tracee and Tasha Hubbard, both of Nashville; two great-nieces, several aunts, cousins and many friends.

Jerry Mathews

SOUTH PITTSBURG - Jerry Wayne Mathews, 56, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, in an Atlanta hospital.

The son of Pauline "Polly" Mathews and the late the Rev. Austin Mathews, he was a 1971 graduate of South Pittsburg High School. He had been a resident of Atlanta for the last 24 years, where he had worked for Moreland Value Inc. for the last 16 years.

He also was preceded in death by his grandparents, Virgil and Maggie Mathews and Buster and Margaret VanAllman; and a nephew, Michael Grider.

He is survived by his mother, Pauline "Polly" Mathews, of South Pittsburg; four brothers, Roger Mathews, of Jasper, Jim Mathews, Austin Mathews and Don Mathews, all of South Pittsburg; two sisters, Carlotta Grider, of South Pittsburg, and Darlene Grider, of Bridgeport, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. CST on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, from the South Pittsburg Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Oaks and the Rev. Dr. Richard Cobble officiating.

Interment will be in Orme Mountain Cemetery.

TULLAHOMA - Pauline "Polly" Geneva Porterfield died Friday, Jan. 1, 2010.

She was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ at Daus.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charlie Bill Layne; second husband, J.D. Rogers; brothers, Charles, Debert Ray and Frank Herron; and sister, Sue Johnson.

Survivors include her sons, Billy Layne and Calvin (Sandy) Layne, both of Dunlap; stepdaughters, Bessie Brewer, Grundy County, Nannette Moody, Gloria Rogers and Patricia Hopkins, all of Spencer, Tenn.; brothers, Gene (Jattie) Herron, Ga., and Don (Nancy) Herron; sisters, Jo Ann (Jerry) Tripplet and Mae (George) Martin, all of Dunlap; grandchildren, Tammy Johnson, Gerald Layne, Shonda Boring and Sherry Johnson; stepgrandchildren, Scott Teeters, Carne Hopkins, Aiden Teeters, Kendall Rogers and Katie Rogers, all of Spencer; and six great-grandchildren.

Walter Scott

CHICKAMAUGA - Walter Piercy Scott, 82, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010.

He had lived in the North Georgia area for most of his life and was a member of Elizabeth Lee United Methodist Church. He was also an Army veteran and graduated from Armstrong University in Savannah, Ga. He was a mechanical and chemical engineer and retired from Southern Cellulose/ADM-Archer Daniels Midland. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan, loved the Georgia Bulldogs (Uga) and enjoyed farming.

He was a devoted husband, daddy and papaw and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Suzanna Scott, of Chickamauga; three daughters and sons-in-law, Leanne (Andy) Rich, Bethanne (John) Kinsey, both of Ringgold, Ga., and Tina (Richard) Sisemore, of Flintstone, Ga.; eight grandchildren, John Jr., Becky, Piercy, Aaron, Jozef, Austin, Phillip and Emily; three great-grandchildren, Amberly, Konar and Matthew; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, in Chattanooga National Cemetery with Minister Rick Maeser officiating.

The family will receive friends after 3 p.m. today, all day Tuesday and prior to leaving for the service on Wednesday.
