Anna Adkins

Anna Knox Adkins, 99, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at the residence of her daughter in Tuscumbia, Ala.

She was a member of East Third Street Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by five sons, five daughters, five brothers and four sisters.

Survivors: son, John (Virginia) Adkins, of Chattanooga; daughters, Sue (Robert) Beckwith, of Tuscumbia, Ala., and Linda (Marshall) Pride, of Chattanooga; goddaughter, Vernell Readus, of Toledo, Ohio; 100-plus grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Cornelius Knox, of Porcuppine, Canada; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral: Wednesday at 1 p.m. at East Third Street Church of Christ with Brother John R. Taylor Sr. officiating.

Burial: Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.

The body will lie in state today after noon at Taylor Funeral Home.

Vincent Allen, 46, passed away Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at a local hospital.

Linda Austin, of East Ridge, passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at her residence.

Robert L. "Chippy" Ballard, 60, of Chattanooga, passed Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, in a local hospital.

Jerry Belcher

Gerald "Jerry" Belcher, 41, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010.

Born in New Jersey, Gerald lived in the Chattanooga area since he was 18. He was a Christian and a self employed tree surgeon.

Survivors include his mother, Delores Belcher; sisters, Debbie (Keith) Murphy and Cheryl (Avery) Robison; brother, John Belcher; along with several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, graveside at Ruth Cofer Cemetery.

Ray Boles

Ray Eugene Boles, 56, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010.

He was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and was preceded in death by his father, Oscar Fred Boles; his mother, Evelyn Gaylor Reaves; and a brother, Donnie Boles.

Survivors are a son, Adam Boles, and a sister, Betty Lebovitz, of Chattanooga.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. today at Chattanooga Memorial Park with the Rev. Wayland Stewart officiating.

Lois Braden

Lois Ann Braden, 62, of Chattanooga, departed this life to be with her Lord and join her family in Heaven on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, W.F. and Bessie Braden.

She is survived by her son and daughter, Bill and Tammie Adkins; three grandchildren, Ashley, Chris Adkins and Presley Ann Adkins; six sisters, Etta McBee, Louise (Philip) Roach, Clara (Ken) Cowan, Betty (Ray) Brown, Judy Biggs and Brenda (Bill) Nieghbors, all of Chattanooga; along with several nieces and nephews.

She was a loving mother to Bill and Tammie, left sunshine wherever she went. She was a retired supervisor from the Medical Records Department at Erlanger hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at 12:30 p.m. in the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Gravett officiating.

Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday up to the hour of service at the funeral home.

Lee Brown Sr.

Lee "Little Red" M. Brown Sr., 80, of Middle Valley, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at his home.

He was deeply loved by his daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lee was a very upstanding and humble member of his community and he will be deeply missed by all that knew him. He served as a Deacon and was a member of Middle Valley Baptist Church. Mr. Brown served in the U.S. Army during World War II and he retired as the shop foreman at Lawrence Doster Lincoln Mercury after 28 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Selma Dean Brown; sons, Lee Morris Brown Jr. and Jerry Dean Brown; mother, Blanche Adeline Brannon; brothers, W.A. Brannon Jr., Marion Brannon and Lloyd Brown; and his sisters, Eulene Cody and Jeanett Swenson.

He is survived by his daughters, Pamela (Bob) Rhodes, Denice (James) Wright; brothers, Gene Brannon and Eddie Brannon; sisters, Carrie Dalton, Betty Rector, Jo Ann Weeks and Joyce McAdams; grandchildren, Lee Wright, Keira Johnson, Eric Rhodes, Barbie Wright and Megan Rhodes; and great-grandchildren, Skyler, Raelyn, Taylor, Drew, Eli, Adeline and Brodie Johnson, Jacob Wright and Ashton Rhodes.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home with Dr. Greg Lindsey and Dr. Jim Hensley officiating.

Burial will follow in Hamilton County Memorial Park.

Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. today and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be James Wright, Lee Wright, Bob Rhodes, Eric Rhodes, Randy Johnson and Stanley Wooten. Honorary pallbearers will be the Good Shepherd Men's Sunday School Class at Middle Valley Baptist Church.

Stephen Dowd

Stephen Mitchell Dowd passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, in Tampa, Fla.

He was retired from the U.S. Airforce and Combustion/Alstom Power.

He was preceded in death by his father, Stephen Frances Dowd, and mother, Emma Rogers.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Della Hallum Dowd, his children and grandchildren, Candy (Richard) Rad, children, Jordyn, Kenzie and Karsyn, all of Tampa, Fla..; Kim (Joe) English and children, Baylee and Stefany, of Ringgold, Ga.; Tom (Jody) Dowd and children, Zachary, Mitchell and Heather, of Waltersboro, S.C.; and his two 4-legged boys, Brawnson and Petey.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, in the J. Avery Bryan Chapel with the Rev. Donald Fraley officiating.

Burial will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.

Visitation is today and Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Marvin Eaker

Marvin Banks Eaker, 73, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at Parkridge East Hospital.

Mr. Eaker was retired from Coca Cola Bottling Co. and was currently employed with Budget Rent-A-Car. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Patricia McDonald Eaker, Chattanooga; son, Thomas Eaker, Chattanooga; and brother, Joseph Eaker, and wife, Myra, Soddy-Daisy.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at New Liberty Cemetery.

Julie Feagans

Julie Pogue Feagans, 46, passed from this life peacefully Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, surrounded by her loving family.

She had courageously battled cancer for almost four years. She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, having attended St. Nicholas and Boyd Buchanan Schools before graduating from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1985 with a B.S. degree in education.

Julie taught school in the Hamilton County Department of Education at Ridgedale Elementary, Lookout Valley Elementary, and Westview Elementary. She then taught kindergarten at St. Nicholas School until her retirement in 2006. She held membership in the Nancy Ward Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Julie was an outstanding wife and mother, always in attendance at her sons sporting events, programs, recitals, etc. She and her husband, Mark, made quite a team in numerous sports, him coaching and she being the "team Mom."

She was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin Stone Pogue, and grandparents, Dr. Clyde and Pearl Stone and Luke and Mollie Pogue.

Julie is survived by her husband, D. Mark Feagans; sons, Blake Cameron Feagans and Jack Harrison Feagans, of Chattanooga; parents, Hays and Evelyn Pogue; sister, Nancy Pogue Tyler, of Chattanooga; brother, Richard (Rick) Hays Pogue, of Bradenton, Fla.; mother and father-in-law, H.W. (Dub) and Barbara Feagans; sister-in-law, Allyson Feagans, Millican, and husband, Brian, of Dalton, Ga.; several nieces and nephews, Jessica Pogue Porrata and husband, Gabe, of Tampa, Fla., Tyler Pogue, of Bradenton, Fla., Joshua and Rachel Tyler, of Chattanooga, and Katherine Grace and Claire Elizabeth Millican, of Dalton, Ga.; and cousins, Janice Pogue and Luke Pogue, of Chattanooga, and Mimi Freedman, of Calif.

Joel Hagewood

Joel Lee "Popeye" Hagewood, 76, of Chattanooga, departed this life Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010.

He was born in Daylight, Tenn., to the late Jerry and Josie Hagewood. Joel served his country in the U.S. Army, and was a Golden Glove Welter Title Award Winner in 1950.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Hagewood; sons, Joey, Jimmy and Jeffery Hagewood; siblings, Joyce Cox, B.T. and Lebron Hagewood; and several nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends from 4 to 9 p.m. today.

Zelma Hughes

Zelma D. Brown Hughes, 88, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, in Augusta, Ga.

Rev. Frank Ladner

The Rev. Frank G. Ladner, 87, of Hixson, went home to be with Lord on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010.

The Rev. Ladner has had 63 years of scouting, beginning January 1934 at Pottstown, Pa., 1st Presbyterian Church Troop 3. His Tenderfoot badge was pinned on him by General "Black Jack" Pershing at Valley Forge, Pa. Leadership roles began as assistant patrol leader, and he moved up on each stop to scoutmaster. He served three different troops in three different councils as scoutmaster. He obtained the Eagle rank in 1938 with four palms.

He had seven years camping experience at Camp Delmont - Valley Forge Council, serving on camp stall, obtaining the Brotherhood of the Order of the Arrow. Frank attended two National Jamborees - the first in 1937 at Washington, D.C.; the second at Valley Force in 1963. As a scout in 1939 he participated in the service camp at the New York World's Fair.

Frank has received the Scoutmaster's key in Valley Forge Council and the Scouter's key in Middle Tennessee. He served as scoutmaster and Chaplain in Great Smoky Mountain Council. In Middle Tennessee Council, he was district commissioner and chaplain, receiving the District Long Rifle Award in 1965. He obtained in 1965, his (PHD in Scouting) the Wood Badge. As chaplain and scoutmaster, he served in the North Hamilton County (TN) District as well as being on the Cherokee Area Council executive board as advancement chairman.

The Rev. Ladner has had three trips to Philmont, one of which was the National Chaplain's Training Course. A highlight of his scouting career was receiving the Silver Beaver Award in 1971.

Prior to entering college and seminary, he served four years in the U.S. Navy. As an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, he has served five churches. For 28 years he has conducted summer services at Possum Creek.

The Rev. Ladner has served as Chaplain in the Chamber of Commerce, Civitan Club, Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Elks, American Legion and all Masonic Bodies. In the American Legion and Elks, he was also State Chaplain. In 1995 he received the highest honorary degree in Masonry - the 33 degree.

"The God we serve recognizes two kinds of people - those who live and also those who lead," The Rev. Ladner's life's motto is "I am, I can, I will."

He was preceded in death by a son, Allen Ladner.

Survivors are his wife, Anne Ladner; two daughters, Ruth (John) Campbell, of Washington, Iowa, and Betty Fay (Jessie) Page, of Kingsport, Tenn.; daughter-in-law, Jeanne Ladner, of California; and three grandchildren, Allssa Ladner, Jonathan Ladner and Erika Page.

Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, at Second Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Perry McCallen officiating.

Burial will be at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 until 5 p.m. today at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

James McKamey Jr.

James Fletcher McKamey Jr., 43, formerly of Hixson, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, in Gulfport, Miss.

He was born on Feb. 16, 1966, in Chattanooga. He graduated from Towers High in Decatur, Ga. After graduation he attended college in Alabama on a baseball scholarship. He pursued a career as a barber and co-owned The Friendly Barbers in Gulfport, Miss.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his father, James Fletcher McKamey Sr., and grandfather, James Lester McKamey.

He is survived by his mother, Johnnie Sue Martel, of Shepherdsville, Ky.; sister, Wendy Sue McKamey, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and his paternal grandmother, Genece McKamey, of Hixson.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the North Chapel.

Services for James will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the North Chapel with Rev. Harold Ray officiating.

Buddy Miles

Buddy Miles, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, Jan. 4, 2010.

Mr. Miles was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and was an insurance agent with Tennessee Valley Insurance.

He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond J. Miles Sr.; mother, Margaret Smith Miles; and sister, Catherine Smith.

Survivors include his wife, DiAnne Miles; sons, Mark A. and Steve Miles; daughter, Diana Breazeale; brother and sister-in-law, Alex (Sandra) Browne; and granddaughter, Christie Denton.

A visitation will be held Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. at Wann Funeral Home, St. Elmo.

David Morrow

David Carl Morrow, 61, of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009.

He was owner of David's Video and Morrow Carpets. A wonderful dad, uncle, grandpa and friend, his interests included conversing with good friends and he was an avid reader.

He is survived by his children, Christie Davis-Wiertel, of Windsor, Colo., and Lewis Davis, of Chattanooga; mother, Nell Morrow; and granddaughter, Alexandria Wiertel

He was preceded by wife, Viva Morrow; brothers, Moe Morrow, Tommy Morrow.

Genene Owen

Genene F. Owen. of East Ridge. passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, with family at her side.

She was a member of Ridgedale Church of Christ. Genene was a past board member and longtime member of American Legion Post 95 Ladies Auxiliary. She and her husband recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. During those 60 years she traveled and supported her husband "Bob O" throughout his military career and retirement. She will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her husband, Robert F. Owen Jr.; brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Reed; niece and nephew, Rick and Cindy Reed; sister-in-law, Rita Reed; godsons, Scott, Brett and Patrick Crawley; and goddaughter, Kathy Goins.

Margaret Shadix

Margaret Louise Shadix, 87, of Chattanooga, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010.

Margaret was one of 13 children and a member of Silverdale Baptist Church. She was a Cook at Hillcrest Elementary School for five years prior to her retirement. Margaret was one who loved to sew, quilt and travel. She was a very loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Odis T. Shadix; and a grandson, little Jerry Shadix.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary (Dennis) Woodmore; sons, Terry (Karen) Shadix and Jerry "Buddy" (Brenda) Shadix; sisters, Laura Littrell, Nellie Tipper, Mageline Williams and Charlotte Plunkett; five grandchildren, Denise Myers, Wendy Woodmore, Angie Corbin, Chris Shadix and Amanda Shadix; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Ann Smith, 78, a native of Atlanta, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, in Chattanooga, where she lived with her cherished daughter, Kathleen Gross, who gave loving care to her.

She is survived by her children, Dennis Kontoes, Julia Brooks, Phyllis Filla, Steve Kontoes, Angela Coker and Curtis Smith.

Herbert Snell

Herbert E. Snell, 81, of Hixson passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010.

Mr. Snell was a retiree of Heil Company and a U.S. Army Veteran. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Roane Coral Society. He enjoyed golf and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hebert H. Snell and Cassie Eagles Snell.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Snell, of Hixson; son, David Snell, of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter, Leslie Snell, of Hixson; brother, Richard (Jerri) Snell, of Lakewood, Colo.; sister, Jane (Robert) Lewis, of Moore, Okla.; grandchildren, Dwayne, Lana and Shane Snell; and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with Father Mike Creson and Father Alex Waraksa officiating.

Omaherl Stewart, 82, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, in a local hospital.

Frances Strickland

Frances Strickland, 64, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009.

She had lived in the Chattanooga area for most of her life and was of the Baptist faith. She had retired from American Plastic and was preceded in death by her father, Walter Ray Griggs.

She was a devoted mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her mother, Dollie Haney, of East Ridge; two sons and daughter-in-law, Ben (Nicole) Strickland and J.C. Strickland, all of Chattanooga; sister, Teri Massingill, of East Ridge; and two grandchildren, Heaven Leigh Strickland and Madison Nicole Strickland.

Graveside services were held Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, in the Lakewood Memory Gardens, East, with the Rev. Walter Hicks officiating.

George Theodore

George Allen Theodore, 85, of Ooltewah, passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010.

George was born on Nov. 18, 1924, in Spartanburg, S.C. to the late Wilma Nolan and George Theodore. He graduated from Clemson University in 1947.

George served in the Army Air Corps as a member of the 455th Bomb Group, the 742nd Bomb Squadron, the 15th Air Force during World War II.

He worked at TVA as an engineer for over 40 years, retiring in 1987.

George was a member of Tyner United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mildred "Midge" Theodore; sons, Philip (Beth) Theodore, of McLean, Va., Michael Theodore, of Greensboro, N.C., and Stuart Theodore, of Denver, Colo.; grandchildren, Christina Theodore, of Charlottesville, Va., and Daniel Theodore, of Greensboro, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Dr. Robert Haskins and the Rev. Glenn Moseley officiating.

Interment will follow in Tyner Cemetery.

Henry Clayton

KINGSTON - Henry Ford Clayton, 87, passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at his home.

He was a member of First Baptist Church Kingston, a World War II veteran and a 50-year member of the Masons and served in the position of Worshipful Master in Lodge 653 in his hometown of Etowah, Tenn. He worked various jobs at Alcoa Aluminum and L&N Railroad just prior to and immediately after World War II. After working at TVA for 37 years he retired in 1988 as plant manager of Kingston Steam Plant.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Mary Alice Clayton; parents, Onye Mae Rymer and Joseph Madison Clayton; and brother, Joe Todd Clayton.

Survivors include sister, Hazel McReynolds; daughters, Joey Mincke, of Chattanooga, and Hilda Wall, of Osyka, Miss.; sons, Hank Clayton, of Soddy-Daisy, and James Clayton, of Kingston; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral: 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, in the Kyker Chapel with the Rev. Sonny Works officiating.

Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in Greenhill Cemetery in Etowah.

MARYVILLE - Brentt Anthony McKinney, 25, formerly of Athens, Tenn., passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

GRUETLI-LAAGER - Avis L. Meeks, 92, died Saturday Jan. 2, 2010.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at Altamont, Tenn. She was very active within the church and had went on a mission at Washington D.C. Temple.

She was born on July 8, 1917, to Lyman Beecher and Flossie Tipton Smartt who preceded her in death along with her grandparents, Reuben and Sarah Jane Nunley Smartt, John Houston and Mary Belle Nunley Tipton Jr.; husband, William Thomas "Petey" Meeks; brothers, William Taft, Reed Smoot and Philander Knox Smartt Sr.; sisters, Ora Lee Smartt Rankin, Geneva Belle Smartt Watts, Jessie Inez Smartt Turnage and Juanita Ruth Smartt; grandsons, Ricky Allan Meeks and Leland Wade Dodson; grandson-in-law, Stanley E. Herrod; and stepgreat-great-granddaughter, Daysia Lee Neal.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Regena Smartt Dodson Stem; son, Cecil Thomas "Tommy" and Mary Braden Meeks; sister, Eva Burl Russell; grandchildren, Regena Dodson Herrod, Barton (Jan) and Brian (Shirley) Dodson, Bobby and Christy Meeks; 15 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are noon CST today at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Altamont with Bishop Aaron Barrett and Tre Pennington officiating.

Burial to follow in Northcutts Cove LDS Mormon Church Cemetery.

Lamar Roberts

SPRING CITY - Joseph Lamar "Winnie" Roberts died peacefully in his sleep at his home Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at the age of 81.

Mr. Robert was a lifelong resident of Spring City. He worked many years for SSM Industries as a warper, shipper and advanced to personnel manager. He later was employed at the Watts Bar Nuclear facility as a security guard until his retirement.

Mr. Roberts also attended Tennessee Weslyan College and Tennessee Tech. He was employed by the Spring City School System as a teacher and coach. Throughout his entire life, "Coach" Roberts initiated and participated in organizing sports and sports programs for the youth of Rhea County. The baseball field on New Lake Road in Spring City was named and dedicated in his honor. Mr. Roberts was very active in the community serving as a volunteer firefighter. He also was very active in serving his community through involvement in many civic opportunities. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Spring City where he had served as church deacon.

He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 56 years, Betty Watson Roberts; by his mother, Idella Roberts Wilkerson; and his adoptive grandparents, Stella and Ida Brady Roberts. Also deceased, his sisters, Joyce Wilkerson Thompson, of Kingston, and Ells Faye Treadway, of Ohio, and his brothers, Homer and Clarence Roberts.

He leaves behind his brother, Roy Brady in Florida; two daughters, Freida (Taylor) Roberts Holmes, of Pikeville and Kathy (David) Roberts Oliver, of Cumming, Ga. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Clay Holmes, of Pikeville, Elizabeth Holmes Warlick, of Crossville and Stephen (Liz) Jones, of Murfreesboro; and great-grandchildren, Johnathan, Joseph, Jayne Warlick, of Crossville, and Hayden and Logan Lamar Jones, of Murfreesboro.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 6, at noon and the funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home.

Burial will follow at Spring City Cemetery.

ROSSVILLE - Lois Hogan Coffman, 85, passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at a local health care facility.

She was of the Baptist faith and was co-owner of Hixson Upholstery.

Mrs. Coffman was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Coffman; son, Gary Coffman; infant son Jimmy Coffman; brothers, Clarence Hogan Sr. Roy Hogan; and sister, Frankie Owsley.

James Crane

LaFAYETTE - James Louis Crane, 82, passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010.

He was born in Albany County, N.Y., to the late James and Elizabeth Crane on Feb. 25, 1927. He retired as a foreman for General Steel with over 20 years of service; was a veteran of the U.S. Army; a volunteer fireman in Ballston SPA, New York; a member of the Ironworkers Union; a master carpenter; enjoyed working on small engines; and loved to travel.

He was also preceded in death by his sister, Gert, and brother, Bill.

Survivors include his children, Jimmy Crane of New York, Mary Clark, Patty Blackwell and Peggy James, all of Virginia, Carolyn Apostol, of LaFayette, Bill Johnson, of Dalton, Ty Johnson, of East Ridge, and Christy Thomas, of Missouri; sister, Mary, of New York; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

RINGGOLD - James Francis Daniel, 82, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at his residence.

He was a lifelong resident of Ringgold and Chattanooga. He was a former member of East Lake Baptist Church and a current member and deacon of East Ridge Baptist Church and the Chapel Class. Mr. Daniel was a former co-owner of Machineco Inc.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcus Roy and Catherine Costello Daniel; wife, Mary Ruth Daniel; brother, Mark Daniel; and sister, Barbara Daniel.

Survivors are son, David (Karen) Daniel, Rutherfordton, N.C.; daughters, Vicki (David) Birchett, Susan (Steve) Barrett, both of Ringgold; sister, Mary Kirkpatrick, Stockbridge, Ga.; grandchildren, Emily Daniel, Leslie Daniel, Knoxville, Stacy (Chris) Sears, White, Ga., Brian (Natalie) Birchett, Rising Fawn, Ga., Christy Barrett Jackson, Ringgold, and Kevin Barrett, Chicago, Ill.; and two great-grandchildren, Cora Jackson and Cole Sears.

CHICKAMAUGA - Walter Piercy Scott, 82, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010.

He had lived in the North Georgia area for most of his life and was a member of Elizabeth Lee United Methodist Church. He was also an Army Veteran and graduated from Armstrong University in Savannah, Ga. He was a mechanical and chemical engineer and retired from Southern Cellulose/ADM-Archer Daniels MDLND. He was an avid Atlanta Braves Fan, loved the Georgia Bulldogs (Uga) and enjoyed farming.

He was a devoted husband, daddy and papaw and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Suzanna Scott, of Chickamauga; three daughters and sons-in-law, Leanne (Andy) Rich, Bethanne (John) Kinsey, both of Ringgold, Ga., and Tina (Richard) Sisemore, of Flintstone, Ga.; eight grandchildren, John Jr., Becky, Piercy, Aaron, Jozef, Austin, Phillip and Emily; three great-grandchildren, Amberly, Konar and Matthew; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, in Chattanooga National Cemetery with Minister Rick Maeser officiating.

George Sloan

FORT OGLETHORPE - George Millard Sloan, 84 , passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010.

He was a lifelong resident of the North Georgia area and was of the Baptist faith.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from Smith Transfer in 1985 after being a truck driver for more than 24 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Emma Sloan; sister, Jewel Mae Williams; and brothers, Thomas Sloan and Chester Sloan.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Audie Sloan; daughters, Patricia "Pat" Wilbourn (Lawrence), of Rossville, and Linda Sloan, of Dallas, Texas; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, in the funeral home chapel with interment to follow at Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

RINGGOLD - Ruth Henderson Thomas, 76, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, in a local hospital.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Dora Henderson, of Rockwood, Tenn.

Survivors include her husband, Charles A. He is survived by his daughter, Constance Lynn Cooley, of Kansas City, Kan.; brother, Paul Payne; sister, Margaret Ann Strickland; four grandchildren; companion dog, Jenny; and special friends, Gail Gallagher and Patsy Trigg.

Janice Hawk

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - Janice Ingram Hawk, 63, of Hilton Head Island, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away at home with her family by her side on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010. She courageously battled cancer for three years all the while keeping her vibrant spirit alive and remaining inspiration for those around her.

Her parents, George and Mildred Ingram, and her sister, Donna Ingram, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her daughter, Angela Hawk, and partner, Ann Kring, of Oakland, Calif.; her son, Todd Hawk, and wife, Tracy Hawk, and grandson, Hunter Hawk, of Hilton Head Island; her brother, Gregory Ingram and wife, Claudia Ingram, and nephew, Gabriel Ingram, of Marietta, Ga.; and her loving companion, Robert Weber, of Hilton Head Island.

She graduated from Cleveland State University with a nursing degree and worked as a nurse at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga for over 20 years. In Hilton Head, she worked with her son to start H2 builders, a custom homebuilder on the island. She was also the proprietor of Decorators Warehouse & Antiques, a showcase for antiques and unique furniture pieces that was a favorite among local residents, decorators, and people visiting the island from far and wide.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be Friday, Jan. 8, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 540 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head Island, SC, 29926.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the National Parks and Conservation Society (www.npca.org) to honor Janice's lifelong love for the National Parks or to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org).
