Anna Adkins

Anna Knox Adkins, 99, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at the residence of her daughter in Tuscumbia, Ala.

Funeral: today at 1 p.m. at East Third Street Church of Christ with Brother John R. Taylor Sr. officiating.

Burial: Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.

Linda Austin

Linda Austin, of East Ridge, passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at her residence.

Estelle Bates

Carrie Estelle Bates, 94, of Chattanooga, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Jan. 4, 2009.

She was born in DeKalb County, Ala., on Oct. 18, 1915.

Mrs. Bates, a member of Westview Baptist Church, had worked in a number of local churches in teaching children and adults and in the music ministry. She had copywrited many gospel songs and had written an as yet unpublished book. She was a member of a ladies prayer band that held services in local jails.

She was a loyal supporter of our service men and women and, along with her sister, sent over 50 thousand newsletters and bulletins to our military forces during the Vietnam War.

She was asked to participate in the Veterans History Project. Her videotaped interview became part of the permanent collection in the Library of Congress.

The Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 203 (Chattanooga), recognized her devoted service by presenting her a Certificate of Appreciation. Member of this chapter will be serving as honorary pallbearers.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Arthur Virgil Bates; her brother, N.C. Meadows Jr.; her sister, Agnes Meadows Condra; her sons-in-law, Paul Kyle and Bobby Womack; and her granddaughter, Deann Kyle.

Cherishing her memory are her son, Thomas (Betty) Bates; her daughter, Nellie Bates Kyle and Ruby Bates Womack; brother, Marshall Meadows; grandchildren, Dr. Dennis (Donna) Kyle, Belinda (Frank) Simmons, Gary (Alicia) Womack, Vernon (Meg) Womack; great-grandchildren, Sean, Laura and Travis Simmons, Kelli and Kati Kyle, Tiffany (Brian) Thomas and Brandy (David) Patefield; and great-great-grandchildren, Katelyn Elizabeth and Emma Grace Thomas. She also is survived by a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at the North Chapel.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at the North Chapel with Dr. David McNabb and the Rev. Ronnie Smith officiating.

A graveside service will be held Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.

Wayne Bledsoe

Wayne Thomas Bledsoe, 65 of Chattanooga, went home to be with his Lord Jesus on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010.

Wayne was born on Sept. 14, 1944, in Soddy, Tenn., to the late Jasper and Helen Bledsoe. Wayne gradated with a bachelor's of science in business administration from Tennessee Technological University. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army. He continued his service to our country as a Captain in the Army Reserves. He worked in sales for almost 30 years at Astec Industries Inc. where he traveled both domestically and internationally. Wayne served as an elder at New Hope Presbyterian Church and had served on the advisory board of Chattanooga Prison and Prevention Ministries. His life was dedicated first to the Lord and then to his family and friends. He never met a stranger.

After his mother's death at age 5, he was raised by his aunt and uncle, the late Gene and Laverta Bledsoe, growing up with his sister, Joyce (Tom) Barrow; and brother, Bob (Mary) Bledsoe.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Teena; children, Chad Bledsoe and Julie Ann (Jeff) Legg; two grandchildren Eli and Presley. He also is survived by several brothers and sisters, Charles (Jeanette) Bledsoe, the late Willard (Edna) Bledsoe, Wilma (Billy) Fowler, Maurice (late, Marie) Bledsoe, the late Katherine Swaggerty, Laura (Felix) Leffew, David (Thelma) Bledsoe, Floyd (Ann) Bledsoe, Floyce (Larry) Smith, Bill (Charlsie) Bledsoe and the late Rita Faye Poovy.

Funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Keith Jones and Dr. Arthur H. Jones Jr. officiating.

Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.

Lois Ann Braden, 62, of Chattanooga, departed this life to be with her Lord and join her family in Heaven on Sunday, January 3, 2010.

Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Johnetta Clemons, 65, passed away Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at a local hospital.

Marvin Davis

Marvin Miller Davis, 73, passed away Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, in a local health care facility.

He was born June 11, 1937, in Thomaston, Ga.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force (Military Police Officer).

Preceding him in death were his parents, Mr. Miller and Evie May Davis, also known as May D. Thurman; brother, William Davis; grandmother, Sallie May Matthews; and grandfather, Sammy Davis.

Loving memories are cherished by his wife, Elsie Louise Davis; children, Nicole Davis, Marvin Jermaine Davis, Sir Carr Davis, Inez Davis, Lawrence (Desi), Alvin Davis, Marvin Dwight Davis, Francine Davis, Terry Davis, Valerie (James) Jennings and Marvin Darrel (Patricia) Davis; aunt, Essie Wilson; 26 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Stephen Dowd

Stephen Mitchell Dowd passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, in Tampa, Fla.

He was retired from the U.S. Airforce and Combustion/Alstom Power.

He was preceded in death by his father, Stephen Frances Dowd, and mother, Emma Rogers.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Della Hallum Dowd, and his children and grandchildren, Candy (Richard) Rad, children, Jordyn, Kenzie and Karsyn, all of Tampa, Fla..; Kim (Joe) English and children, Baylee and Stefany, of Ringgold, Ga.; and Tom (Jody) Dowd and children, Zachary, Mitchell and Heather, of Waltersboro, S.C.; and his two 4 legged boys, Brawnson and Petey.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, in the J. Avery Bryan Chapel with the Rev. Donald Fraley officiating.

Burial will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.

Marvin Eaker

Marvin Banks Eaker, 73, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at Parkridge East Hospital.

Mr. Eaker was retired from Coca Cola Bottling Co. and was currently employed with Budget Rent-A-Car. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Patricia McDonald Eaker, Chattanooga; son, Thomas Eaker, Chattanooga; and brother, Joseph Eaker, and wife, Myra, Soddy-Daisy.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at New Liberty Cemetery.

Sandra "Sandy" Erickson, 59, of Collegedale, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at her residence.

She was an elementary school teacher for 26 years and a member of Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Erickson, Collegedale; her mother, Frieda Blanchard, both of Collegdale; a son, Jonathan Erickson, Athens, Tenn.; and a daughter, Julie Cavanaugh, Portland, Ore.

Robert Green

Robert Lamond Green, 65, of Chattanooga, departed this life Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009.

He was born in Clayton County, S.C., to the late Deacon Peter and Mary Jane Green.

He leaves to mourn his wife, Ruth, of Jersey City, N.J.; children, Mary Anne (Keith) Holiday, of Medane, N.C., Ruth Anne Green, of Orangeburg, S.C., Michelle Graves, of Chattanooga, Sharon (Reginald) Coffin, of Haverhill, Mass., Sean Graves, of Huntsville, Ala., Tomorrow Green, of Chattanooga, and Carolyn Sales, of Huntsville, Ala.; brothers and sisters, George (Emma) Green, of Orangeburg, S.C., Patrick Green, all of Orangeburg S.C., Curmise Green and Karen (Kenneth) Myers, both of Orangeburg, S.C., Ross (Maxine) Green, of Fayetteville, N.C., and Phermella (Ferlondo) Tullock, of Columbia, S.C.; 26 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a lifelong devoted friend, Mildred Brooks, of Chattanooga.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at Ruth Cofer Cemetery.

The body will lie in state from noon until 6 p.m. today.

Darnell Lee Griffin, infant son of Carmeisha Griffin, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2009.

Zelma Hughes

Zelma D. Brown Hughes, 88, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, in Augusta, Ga.

Zelma was a longtime resident of the Chattanooga area and was a member of the Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Alvin Hughes, and a daughter, Charlotte Hughes.

Zelma is survived by her two sons, Greg (Tammy) Hughes and Calvin (Cindy) Hughes; three grandchildren, Daniel, Jared and Carter Hughes; two brothers, Bobby (Faye) Brown and Bill Brown; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the North Chapel.

Services for Zelma will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the North Chapel with Minister Dan McMahan officiating.

Rev. Frank Ladner

The Rev. Frank G. Ladner, 87, of Hixson, went home to be with Lord on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010.

The Rev. Ladner has had 63 years of scouting, beginning January 1934 at Pottstown, Pa., 1st Presbyterian Church Troop 3. His Tenderfoot badge was pinned on him by Gen. "Black Jack" Pershing at Valley Forge, Pa. Leadership roles began as assistant patrol leader, and he moved up on each stop to scoutmaster. He served three different troops in three different councils as scoutmaster. He obtained the Eagle rank in 1938 with four palms.

He had seven years camping experience at Camp Delmont -- Valley Forge Council, serving on camp stall, obtaining the Brotherhood of the Order of the Arrow. Frank attended two National Jamborees -- the first in 1937 at Washington, D.C., the second at Valley Force in 1963. As a scout in 1939 he participated in the service camp at the New York World's Fair.

Frank has received the Scoutmaster's key in Valley Forge Council and the Scouter's key in Middle Tennessee. He served as scoutmaster and chaplain in the Great Smoky Mountain Council. In Middle Tennessee Council, he was district commissioner and chaplain, receiving the District Long Rifle Award in 1965. He obtained in 1965, his (Ph.D in Scouting) Wood Badge. As chaplain and scoutmaster, he served in the North Hamilton County (TN) District as well as being on the Cherokee Area Council executive board as advancement chairman.

The Rev. Ladner has had three trips to Philmont, one of which was the National Chaplain's Training Course. A highlight of his scouting career was receiving the Silver Beaver Award in 1971.

Prior to entering college and seminary, he served four years in the U.S. Navy. As an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, he has served five churches. For 28 years he has conducted summer services at Possum Creek.

The Rev. Ladner has served as Chaplain in the Chamber of Commerce, Civitan Club, Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Elks, American Legion and all Masonic Bodies. In the American Legion and Elks, he was also State Chaplain. In 1995 he received the highest honorary degree in Masonry -- the 33 degree.

"The God we serve recognizes two kinds of people -- those who live and also those who lead," the Rev. Ladner's life's motto is "I am, I can, I will."

He was preceded in death by a son, Allen Ladner.

Survivors are his wife, Anne Ladner; two daughters, Ruth (John) Campbell, of Washington, Iowa, and Betty Fay (Jessie) Page, of Kingsport, Tenn.; daughter-in-law, Jeanne Ladner, of California; and three grandchildren, Allssa Ladner, Jonathan Ladner and Erika Page.

Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. today, Jan. 6, at Second Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Perry McCallen officiating.

Burial will be at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

James McKamey Jr.

James Fletcher McKamey Jr., 43, formerly of Hixson, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, in Gulfport, Miss.

He was born on Feb. 16, 1966, in Chattanooga. He graduated from Towers High in Decatur, Ga. After graduation he attended college in Alabama on a baseball scholarship. He pursued a career as a barber and co-owned The Friendly Barbers in Gulfport, Miss.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his father, James Fletcher McKamey Sr., and grandfather, James Lester McKamey.

He is survived by his mother, Johnnie Sue Martel, of Shepherdsville, Ky.; sister, Wendy Sue McKamey, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and his paternal grandmother, Genece McKamey, of Hixson.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. today and noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the North Chapel.

Services for James will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the North Chapel with the Rev. J.N. Howard officiating.

Lottie Oliver

Lottie Bell Oliver, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at her residence.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Oliver; parents, Melvin and Emma Branch; and brother, Robert Branch.

Survivors: sister, Juliette Freeman, of Chattanooga; nieces, Emma, Sandra, Olivia Benford, Betty Freeman and Lois (Kenneth Sr.) Martin; nephews, Harold, Melvin, David, Nathan (Rena) Benford, Norman (Lisa) Freeman, Victor (Melissa) Freeman, Waymon, Ronald Oliver and Robert Sims; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.

Nonie Picklesimer

Nonie B. Picklesimer, 80, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at her residence.

She was the daughter of the late Jacob and Lizzie Beeler and was preceded in death by her husband, Arvil Picklesimer, and son, Virgil Picklesimer.

She was a member of Hamilton Baptist Church.

Nonie loved her family and enjoyed sewing, quilting and crocheting.

Survivors include her two sons and daughters-in-law, Roy (Jill) Picklesimer, of Soddy-Daisy, and Danny (Nora) Picklesimer, of Harrison; special grandson, Jason Picklesimer; special granddaughter, Jenny Alford; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Revs. Ronnie Dotson and John Wheeler officiating.

Interment will follow in Decatur Cemetery in Decatur, Tenn.

Ida Quarles

Ida Sue Stroud Quarles, 92, of Chattanooga, went to join our Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010.

She was a native of Cleveland, Tenn., and had lived most of her life in Chattanooga where she was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Tiftonia. She retired from the restaurant business where she at one time was an owner and later served as a hostess.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Quarles; father, Walter D. Stroud; mother, Dora Lee Stroud; stepmother, Pearl Stroud; brothers, Albert, Jim, and Willie Stroud; and sister, Eva Pierce.

Survivors include two sons, Johnny Columbus Ward, of Goodyear, Ariz., and Walter David Ward, of Chattanooga; four daughters, Virginia Lee Gouge Keeler, of Morristown, Tenn., Linda Joyce Dye, of Augusta, Ga., Sue Ellen Touchton, of Hayesville, N.C., and Judy Zarzour, of Chattanooga; two sisters, Ruth Parker, of Chattanooga and Wilma Winkles, of Chattanooga; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Dr. Maurice Rawlings

Dr. Maurice Rawlings, 87, of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at his residence.

He was a longtime resident of Chattanooga, and had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Dr. Rawlings was physician to President Dwight Eisenhower, and served as physician to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was an associate clinical professor of medicine for the University of Tennessee and a National Teaching Faculty for the American Heart Association. Dr. Rawlings also served as medical director for Aventis and ZLB Bio-Science Labratories.

Dr. Rawlings was the author of several books, including: "Beyond Death's Door," "Before Life Comes," "Life Wish" and "To Hell and Back," published in several languages. His first and last publications were made into movies.

Dr. Rawlings was a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Angiology and Chest Physicians; a diplomat for the American Board of Cardiology; and served as chairman for the TVA Medical Retirement Board. Dr. Rawlings was also a licensed private pilot, with both instrument and multi-engine ratings.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Martha Emilia Rawlings.

He is survived by a son, Maurice S. Rawlings Jr., M.D.; four daughters, Ann Elizabeth Rawlings, M.D., Norfolk, Va., Susan Rawlings Dowis, Rainsville, Ala., Patricia Rawlings Prouty, Chickamauga, Ga., and Margaret Rawlings Pearce, Chattanooga; and a sister, Ruth Rawlings Miller, Clearwater, Fla.; 11 grandchilden; and four great-grandchilden.

Royce Rector, 78, of Hixson, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010.

He was born in Jasper, Tenn., and retired from DuPont after 41 years of service. He was a member of Middle Valley Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Bertie Rector; daughter, Kathy Rector; and brother, Claude Rector.

Bobby Joe Sneed, 69, of Hixson, passed away Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at a local hospital.

He was of the Baptist faith. He served 4 tours in Vietnam with the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty "Granny B" Sneed; sister, Delcia Marie Kurk; and brothers, L.C. Sneed and Jack Allen Sneed.

He is survived by his daughters, Margaret (Gary) Burton, Kay (Wayne) Roberts; sons, Patrick Shane Sneed and Robert Allen (Tammie) Sneed; grandchildren, Monica, Brook, Amanda, Pat Allen (Pam), Kaleb, Kyle and Derrick; and great-grandchildren, Kayla, Dylan, Emily, Heather Brock, Krista, Ethan, Colin Gaskill, Alyssa Roberts and Makenzie Kowalski.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Carl Hunsucker officiating.

Interment will follow the service at Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.

Herbert E. Snell, 81, of Hixson passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010.

Mr. Snell was a retiree of Heil Company and a U.S. Army Veteran. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Roane Coral Society. He enjoyed golf and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hebert H. Snell and Cassie Eagles Snell.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Snell, of Hixson; son, David Snell, of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter, Leslie Snell, of Hixson; brother, Richard (Jerrie) Snell, of Lakewood, Colo.; sister, Jane (Robert) Lewis, of Moore, Okla.; grandchildren, Dwayne, Lana and Shane Snell; and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with Father Mike Creson and Father Alex Waraksa officiating.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

George Theodore

George Allen Theodore, 85, of Ooltewah, passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010.

George was born on Nov. 18, 1924, in Spartanburg, S.C., to the late Wilma Nolan and George Theodore. He graduated from Clemson University in 1947.

George served in the Army Air Corps as a member of the 455th Bomb Group, the 742nd Bomb Squadron and the 15th Air Force during World War II.

He worked at TVA as an engineer for over 40 years, retiring in 1987.

George was a member of Tyner United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mildred "Midge" Theodore; sons, Philip (Beth) Theodore, of McLean, Va., Michael Theodore, of Greensboro, N.C., and Stuart Theodore, of Denver, Colo.; grandchildren, Christina Theodore, of Charlottesville, Va., and Daniel Theodore, of Greensboro, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today in the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Dr. Robert Haskins and the Rev. Glenn Moseley officiating.

Interment will follow in Tyner Cemetery.

He was a retired coalminer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Mary Hargis Burnett; brothers, Johnny and Paul Burnett; and sister, Nelline Singleton.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty Meeks Burnett; son, Jeff (Teresa) Burnett; daughters, Vickie (Dan) Layne, Karen (Jim) Layne and LaDonna (Eric) Green; grandchildren, Hollie, Dale, Anthony, Shane, Justin, Jake, Erica, Whitney and Emily; great-grandson, Dakota; and sisters, Mary Rogers and Bess (Doug) Brown.

Henry Clayton

KINGSTON -- Henry Ford Clayton, 87, passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at his home.

He was a member of First Baptist Church Kingston, a World War II veteran and a 50-year member of the Masons and served in the position of Worshipful Master in Lodge 653 in his hometown of Etowah, Tenn. He worked various jobs at Alcoa Aluminum and L&N Railroad just prior to and immediately after World War II. After working at TVA for 37 years he retired in 1988 as plant manager of Kingston Steam Plant.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Mary Alice Clayton; parents, Onye Mae Rymer and Joseph Madison Clayton; and brother, Joe Todd Clayton.

Survivors include sister, Hazel McReynolds; daughters, Joey Mincke, of Chattanooga, and Hilda Wall, of Osyka, Miss.; sons, Hank Clayton, of Soddy-Daisy, and James Clayton, of Kingston; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Audie Sloan; daughters, Patricia "Pat" Wilbourn (Lawrence), of Rossville, and Linda Sloan, of Dallas, Texas; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
