Willett Carman Sr.

Willett A. Carman Sr., 74, of Chattanooga, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, with his wife of 54 years, Sue Carman, and family members by his side.

Mr. Carman served 23 years in U.S. Air Force, also served in the Vietnam War as a flight engineer. He was later employed with Merrill Lynch as a stock broker. He was Commander of VFW Post 4848 where he also played taps for the Honor Guard of Chattanooga. He belonged to The American Legion, and helped reinstate the Veterans parade for Chattanooga.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred Fickie; father, Mortimer; brother, Jack Carman; sister, Georgia O'Malley; grandson, James Carman; son-in-law, Adrian Kovalik.

Survivors include his wife Sue Carman; five children, Lynn Trallo, Sherry Lawrence, Bill Carman Jr., Sandra Martone, Laura Canon; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Bob Carman, Mort Carman, George Carman; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at the North Chapel with Rev. Wayland Stewart officiating.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today, Jan. 15, 2010, and on Saturday, Jan. 16, from noon until 1 p.m. at the North Chapel.

Mary Crine

Mary Duncan Crine, 85, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010.

She attended Virginia Intermont, graduating from UT Knoxville in 1945 with a BS in Business Administration, and worked for TVA and the Veteran's Administration.

Mary was best known for her love of golf, playing over 50 years, and her extensive collection of golf notes and books. She was a member of both the Brainerd and Chattanooga Women's Golf Associations and Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Henry Crine Jr.; son, William Stuart (Kim) Crine, of Des Moines, Iowa; daughter, Cathy Crine (Tom) Loveless, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and grandchildren, Thomas L. Loveless III, William Scott Loveless and Caitlin Elizabeth Crine.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at the East Chapel with the Rev. William Mills officiating.

Burial will be private

Visitation by friends will be at the funeral home two hours prior to the service.

Joe Gawrys

Joeseph Patrick Gawrys, 55, a resident of Chattanooga for over 29 years, passed away Friday, Jan. 8, 2010.

Joe was born in Indianapolis, Ind., to Kathleen and Joseph Gawrys.

Joe taught at the Baylor School for 29 1/2 years. He graduated from Wasbash College and Harvard Divinity School.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathleen Gawrys; and nephew, Benjamin Farber.

Joe is survived by his wife, Sue Gawrys; two daughters, Nancy (Ken) Masengil, Flintstone, Ga., Jennifer Morris, Tuscon, Ariz.; father, Joseph H. Gawrys, Indianapolis, Ind.; five sisters, Mary Gawrys, Dekalb, Ill., Eileen Gawrys (John Rogers), Honolulu, Hawaii, Sharon Brown, Indianapolis, Ind., Patricia Gawrys (Craig Bixler), St. Charles, Ill., and Nancy Gawrys, Indianapolis, Ind.; one brother, Kevin Gawrys (Karen), Indianapolis, Ind.; one grandson, Jackson Parham; one granddaughter, Emmeline Parham, of Chattanooga; and his beloved dog, Al.

Paul Johnson

Paul Johnson, 69, of Chattanooga, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Jan. 11, 2010.

He was a member of Terra Vista Baptist Church.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Terra Vista Baptist Church with the Rev. Gurney Beard officiating.

Burial will be "Private."

Jonathan Lawrence

Jonathan Alex "Poo Putt" Lawrence, 42, of Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord after passing away suddenly on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010.

He was a graduate of Howard High School. He attended New United Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Anderson; and brother, James Jenkins.

Survivors include a son, Jonathan Jr.; daughter, Cierra; grandchild, Tyasia Underwood; parents, John and Diane Lawrence; brother, John Jr. of Germany; sisters, Monica Lawrence, Nashville, Manette Lawrence, of Chattanooga, Joscelyn White, of Chattanooga; Cordelia Dudek, of Texas; Stephanie Jenkins, of Virginia; Jacqueline Govan, of Chattanooga; a host of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 at Resurrected Baptist Church, located at 2230 E. 18th St., with Elder Eddie D. Jacks officiating.

Interment in Lakewood Memory Gardens , East.

Hillis Layne

Hillis Layne, 91, passed away at his daughter's home on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010.

Born on Feb. 23, 1918 in Whitwell, Tenn., he was a resident of Chattanooga for most of his life.

He was a longtime member of East Ridge Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon for many years.

Mr. Layne enjoyed a 37 year career in professional baseball. He was signed by Joe Engel to play in the Washington Senators organization, and played for the Chattanooga Lookouts before being called up to the Washington Senators in the 1941 season. After his major league career, he led the Pacific Coast league in batting in 1947. He played in nearly 2,000 professional games, with a lifetime batting average of .335. After his playing days, he was a minor league manager, a minor league director for the Senators, and a baseball scout for the A's, Mets, Senators and Rangers. He was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1987.

Following his baseball career, Mr. Layne managed the downtown Chattanooga Ira Trivers clothing store for 15 years.

Mr. Layne was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Graham Layne; parents, Elijah and Dolly Hudson Layne; and brothers Harrell, Meredith, Seth and Jewell Layne.

Survivors include a sister, Leona Graham, Whitwell; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Pennie Layne, Kingsport; a daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Brian Dowling, Signal Mountain; and four grandchildren, Lori Layne, Clemson, S.C., Andrew Layne Johnson City; and Maggie and Jack Dowling, Signal Mountain.

Funeral services will be held at noon today, Jan. 15, at East Ridge Church of Christ with Minister Charles Cochran officiating.

Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Agnes Leslie, 73, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at her residence.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert Carmichael and Priscilla Patterson; husband, Nolen Leslie and son, Terrence Leslie.

Survivors: son, Randall Leslie, of Chattanooga; daughters, Pamela McDaniel, Carla Leslie, both of Chattanooga and Laurie Leslie, of Chicago, Ill.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Alfred Carmichael, of Chattanooga; sister, Arlene Daniels, of Chicago, Ill.; a host of other relatives and friends.

Robert Lusk

Robert Lusk, 82, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away in Largo, Fla., on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lusk, and Mettie Mays; brother, Milo Lusk.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lusk; sister, Mona Howard; four children, Debbie Hunter, Kim Cagle, Carol Crow and Bobby Lusk; six grandchildren, Brittany, Jennie, Jayme, Kent, Brent, Trent and Carsyn.

Robert Lusk was a graduate alumna of Georgia Tech, and was in the Sports Hall Of Fame. He also was in the Old Timer Hall Of Fame of Chattanooga.

The memorial service will be 1 p.m. Sunday from the chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel.

Mabel Mall

Mabel Iris Mall, 79, of Chattanooga, passed on to be with the Lord on Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, in a local hospital.

She was born on Dec. 27, 1930 and was the daughter of the late Jiwan G. and Rahim Mall; beloved sister of Gilbert Cecil and Dorothy Taj, aunt and mama to Jonathan and David Cecil and Sheeba Parvez.

She has moved to her permanent heavenly residence and is now closer to her family friends and those who preceded her to her Father's mansion. She will be immensely missed for her love, devotion and care that she so selflessly poured on her family and those she came across. In prayers, praises and song she will always be closer to those who loved her and whose lives she touched.

She was preceded before her departure by her father, Jiwan G. Mall; mother, Rahim Bibi; brother, George Merrill; nephew, Kailash Peter Merrill; sisters-in-law, Victoria Cecil and Khurshid Merrill.

Survivors include Gilbert Cecil, Anoose and Dorothy Taj, Jonathan and Nighat Cecil, David and Farah Cecil, Sheeba Parvez; nieces and nephews and the extended family members include, Neena and Charles Clevenger, Sujeel Taj, Ramona and Michael Hendrix, Pamela Mandody, Paul and Robina Merrill, Patrick Merrill, Phillip and Aqeela Merrill, Primrose and Khalid Rashid; grandchildren, Jasmine and Rebekah Cecil, Sarah, Joshua and Jonathan Cecil, Sharoon and Joy Gill, Asha and Isaac Clevenger, Solomon, Zephyr and Sullivan Hendrix, Jivan Taj, Akash and Dimple Merrill, Samuel Mandody and several others living in other U.S. cities and abroad.

She moved to the United States in 1987 and became a member of Tyner United Methodist Church that same year. She also served on the Carebear Ministries of the church selflessly.

She retired as a Teacher from the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Pakistan and was greatly admired and loved by her colleagues and students. She touched the lives of everyone she came in contact with and prayed for those in need. She was a model of virtue, goodness and patience. "Blessed are those who wash their robes that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may go through the gates into the city" (Rev. 22:14)

Memorial contributions may be made to Tyner United Methodist Church's Carebear Ministry.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tyner United Methodist Church with Dr. Robert Haskins and the Rev. Younis Farhat officiating.

Interment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The body will lie in state at the church one hour before the service on Saturday.

Martha Miles

Martha Bradford Miles, 79, of Signal Mountain, passed away Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010.

She was a graduate of Central High School and a longtime member of Signal Mountain Baptist Church.

She is survived by her children, Diane Breazeale, of Nashville, Steven (Sharon) Miles, of Dayton Mountain, Mark Miles, of Signal Mountain; granddaughter, Christie (Nathan) Denton, of Chattanooga; adopted grandchildren, Katy and Whitney Turnbull, of Signal Mountain; brother, Jack Bradford, of Alpharetta, Ga.; two sisters, Mary (Bob) Allison, of Chattanooga, Charlotte Everton, of Signal Mountain; several nieces and nephews.

A visitation to celebrate her life will be Saturday, Jan. 16, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Wayside Presbyterian Church.

Eugene Morton

Eugene "Gene" Morton, 92, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010.

He was born in Knoxville, on April 17, 1917 to the late Taylor and Cornelia Morton. Mr. Morton graduated from Central High School in 1937, attended McKenzie Business School and worked as an operator for TVA for 35 years. After retirement, he enjoyed working in his garden and workshop as he was an avid woodworker. Also, he and Muriel traveled extensively. Mr. Morton was a member of Bright Hope Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and Shriners Alhambra Temple. He was a member of Red Bank United Methodist Church and had previously been a member of Trinity Woodmore United Methodist Church for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Kate Millsaps and Maxine Towles; and brother, Ralph Morton.

Survivors include his wife, Muriel Mee Morton; three step-children: William W. "Bill" (Sandra) Mee, Betty Mee (Tommy) Jackson and Martha Mee (Dr. Kip) Frizzell; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth (Dr. Robert) Myers; brother, Joe (Joyce) Morton; and close personal friend, Herman Agee.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Lane Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Lambert officiating.

There will be a Shriners Honor Guard at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park. Jeff and Joe Morton, Horton Corwin, Tim Frizzell, Andy Pitts and Bob Brown will serve as pallbearers.

Mary Louise Shull Mumm, 91, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at her home.

She was born Sept. 26, 1918.

Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Robert G. Mumm Sr. and eight brothers and stepbrothers. Louise was a longtime member of Brainerd Baptist Church and the Grace Sunday School Class.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Maples, of Chattanooga; her sons, Robert G. (Jan) Mumm Jr., of Ringgold; Paul Frederick Mumm and his fiancé, Kim Payne, of Chattanooga; five grandchildren, Rick (Jill) Dell, Barbie (Jeff) Painter, Amy Thurman, Laura Desgro and Dawn (John Davis; nine great-grandchildren, Christia, Marissa, Alexa, R.J., Bailey, Kelsey, Lacy, Ty, and Ian; great-great-grandson, Sammy.

Willis Murdock Jr.

Willis James Murdock Jr. departed this life on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Murdock was born July 11, 1929 in Joliet, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willis James and Helen Kiep Murdock; and sisters, Marion Murdock Abbott and Jane Murdock Holland.

He is survived by Patricia Enright Murdock, his devoted wife of 51 years; and his children, Susan Murdock Egan (Bill), of Edina, Minn., Elizabeth Ann Murdock, of Nashville, Willis James Murdock, III (Tara), of Lookout Mountain, Ga. and Michael George Murdock (Susannah), of Signal Mountain. His grandchildren are Michael, Claire and Kathleen Egan, of Edina, Minn., Riley and Will Murdock, Lookout Mountain and Anna and Jack Murdock, Signal Mountain. His sister, Ann Murdock Kane (Jack), of Joliet, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive him.

Bill received a degree in Business Marketing from Marquette University. Upon his completion, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp where he was awarded the rank of Captain.

He had a long and successful career in the carpet industry, retiring from the position of Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales for West Point Pepperell in 1987.

Bill was a devoted husband and father. He took pride in his children and grandchildren's many accomplishments, and served as an inspirational mentor to each of them.

He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, and the SERRA Club, and a volunteer at the Chattanooga Community Kitchen, and Signal Mountain Library.

He will be remembered and lovingly missed for his faith, his work ethic and his endearing character.

The family would like to express sincere appreciation to Hospice of Chattanooga for their thorough and compassionate care.

Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Chattanooga and the Chattanooga Community Kitchen.

The family will receive friends today, Jan. 15, from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 16, from 11 a.m.-noon at the church.

Elsie Savannah Raglin, 102, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010.

Elsie Savannah Raglin born Aug. 26, 1907.

Born in Bryant, Ala., the daughter of Joseph and Mary Ann Robinson Smith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Turner Raglin; and her son, Donald Ramon Raglin.

She is survived by her son, Carl Raglin and his wife, Bettye Jane Winfree Raglin, of Chicago and three grandchildren, Carla Neil Raglin Hahn and her husband, Brian Hahn, of Chicago, and James Michael Raglin, of Austin Texas, and Shannon Lee Raglin Cecola and her husband, Robin Cecola of Chicago. There are five great-grandchildren, Jonathon and Margot Hahn, and Joshua, Vienna, and Ari Raglin, of Houston, Texas. Her niece, JoAnn Hansel, of Chattanooga and several nieces and nephews in the area.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, at the North Chapel with the Rev. Lee Peters officiating.

Interment will follow at Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Mary Elizabeth Sharp, 79, of Lookout Valley, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, in a local hospital.

Newell Smith

Newell Chandler Smith, 95, a native of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010.

He was born Nov. 23, 1914, to John Henry and Laura Mabel Daniels Smith. Mr. Smith was a veteran serving in Central Europe, Rhineland and was in the Battle of the Bulge. He was past master of Highland Park Masonic Lodge, member of the Alhambra Shrine, Jesters and the American Legion Post 14. He was an active member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the J. Fred Johnson Sunday School Class. He served over 50 years with the railway system retiring from Norfolk Southern in 1977. He was also a member of the Elks Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lila Duggan Smith and his parents.

Survivors include two nephews, J. Wiley Cotten and Jim Duggan, both of Chattanooga.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Dr. Gary Carver officiating.

Gloria Jean Williams, 72, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, and sister, and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Irene Stowe; two brothers.

Survivors include her daughter, Angela Downer Young of Ooltewah; sisters, Joan Charles, of Florida, and Judy Steward, of Trenton, Ga.; two grandchildren, Mary Ann Thompson, of Chattanooga, Jason Kenner, of Ringgold, Ga.; one great-granddaughter, Arissa Kenner, Ringgold.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

DAYTON - James McKinley Blackburn, 77, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, in Knoxville.

Perry Ferguson Jr.

GRANDVIEW - Perry Thomas Ferguson Jr., 56, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga.

Born in Rockwood, Tenn., he was the son of the late Perry Thomas and Mamie Atkinson Ferguson Sr. Perry was a graduate of Spring City High School, Class of 1971, and Roane State Community College. He was an employed by TVA for 20 years working at Watts Bar, Eastern Area Radiological Lab and retired from the Central Lab of TVA. Upon his retirement from TVA, he became Public Works Director for the Town of Spring City. Perry was currently employed by the city of Chattanooga Public Works Department as the Wastewater Project Coordinator.

He was president of the Spring City Cemetery Association, past president of the Spring City Chamber of Commerce and of the Methodist faith. Perry loved bluegrass music.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Sarah Snively Ferguson, of Grandview; stepchildren, John (Tami) Lee, of Knoxville, David Lee, of Orlando, Fla., and Allison (Joust Van Haren) Lee, of Tucson, Ariz.; and three stepgrandchildren, Fiona and Nadine Van Haren, both of Tucson, Ariz., and Alexander Lee, of Knoxville.

A celebration of Perry's life will be held Saturday, Jan. 16, at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with friends sharing stories and memories of Perry.

Cleveland Seals

DUNLAP - Cleveland Seals, 69, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at Memorial Hospital.

Born on July 14, 1940, to parents, J.C. and Louise Minton Seals, he was the middle child of three children.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents and his daughter, Tracy Lynn Seals.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Sewilla Harvey Seals, Dunlap; daughter, Mitzi Boland, Tucker, Ga.; son, Shawn Seals, Hixson; and sisters, Bertha Tabors and Mary Ellen Brown.

He is a former employee of Lockheed, American Electric, worked at Griffith Elementary School for numerous years during the 1980s, and was employed at Baylor School as part of their maintenance department for 14 years. He had been enjoying retirement for the past seven years.

Mr. Seals loved retirement, and he could be seen each morning at the local Hardee's enjoying coffee and conversation. In fact, he liked it so much that he arrived most mornings before the doors officially opened. His friends knew him as someone who loved to politic; his love for politics inspired him to served eight years on the Sequatchie County Commission: a role that he enjoyed up until the end of his term in the Early 90's.

Rev. Leon Hullender

TUNNEL HILL - Rev. Leon Hullender, 70, a pastor whose influence ranged far beyond its traditional congregation, passed away at his home Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010.

Rev. Hullender, known to most as simply, "Preacher", was, for over 47 years an iconic Christian presence within the North Georgia area.

Rev. Hullender was recognized for his preaching and singing with the Hullender Family and most recently with the New Bethel Quartet.

He was pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church, Nellie Head Memorial Baptist Church and at other area churches. Rev. Hullender loved his family, and everyone he came in contact with. He was a humanitarian who always gave of himself, whether it was with humor or prayer.

Rev. Hullender served the boys and girls of Catoosa County for 27 years as a school system bus driver. He was a spirit of optimism and of joy even when there were so many negative things happening within the community. The glass was always half full to Leon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nita and Carl Hullender.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Peggy Hullender; son, Rodney Hullender; daughter, Pam Hullender (Robin) Womack; and granddaughter, Ivy Kate Chambers, all of Ringgold; brothers, Morris (Jeaneane) and Wayne (Linda) Hullender of Ringgold; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Don Self officiating.

Robert Whitworth

RINGGOLD - Robert J. Whitworth, 78, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at his residence.

Born Jan. 6, 1932 in Greenville, S.C., he was a graduate of Greenville High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and held the rank of Sergeant upon his discharge and was also the recipient of two Bronze Stars. For the past 40 years, he had been a resident of Chattanooga and north Georgia and was employed as a truck driver with Burlington Industries for more than 30 years and also with Shaw Industries before his retirement in 1996. Mr. Whitworth was of the Baptist faith and a longtime sports fan, enjoying NASCAR and the Atlanta Braves.

John Bevel

BRIDGEPORT - John William "Hulie" Bevel, 79, passed away Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010.

Mr. Bevel retired from DuPont in Chattanooga after 39 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army as a Military Police and continued to serve by dedicating 25 years to the Army National Guard retiring as Master Sergeant. Active in his community, Mr. Bevel served several years as President of the Bridgeport Area Historical Association (BAHA), was elected Grand Marshall of the Bridgeport Parade in 2002 and was instrumental in the restoration of the Bridgeport Depot Museum. After retiring, he volunteered at North Jackson High School assisting with welding classes in the Agriculture Department and secretary of Mount Carmel Cemetery. He was known throughout the area for his gorgeous muscadine vineyard and shared the harvest with family and friends. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bridgeport.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward P. and Laura Bevel; brothers, Eugene and Robert "Bobby" Bevel; and sisters, Joyce and Kathleen Bevel.

Mr. Bevel is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan Crane Bevel; son and daughter-in-law, John Glen and Lanette Bevel; grandsons, Corey Glen and Christian William Bevel; granddaughter, Cassidy Lanette Bevel; and mother- in-law, Lunda Crane. Also surviving are his sisters and brothers-in-law, Odessa and George Werner, of Bridgeport, Bessie Graham, of Cookeville, Tenn., and Betty and Willard Watson, of Jasper, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was retired from the Federal Railroad Administration and was an avid genealogist.

Mrs. Evans was preceded in death by her husband, Richard J. Evans; her son, Kenneth Paul Evans; and her sister, Louise Rowe.
