Peggy Andrews

Peggy Andrews, 82, of Chattanooga, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010.

She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and was part owner of Jax Liquor Store for over 30 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband Don Andrews in 1965.

She is survived by her two children, Steve Andrews (Lisa) and Linda Whitten (Steve) and two grandchildren, Brian Andrews and Ann Andrews, whom she loved dearly and worried about constantly, and 22 nephews and nieces.

The family would like to express great appreciation for the doctors and staff at Memorial North Park on the second floor for their wonderful care and loving support during her illness and her death. She could not have been in better hands.

Also appreciated are the special people in her life that meant so much to her. All the staff at the Piccadilly at Northgate, especially Lenny, Patty and Matt; the gang at Nicky's, Mike, Amanda and Scott; greatly appreciated are John, Connie, Bill and Rex at the North Chattanooga Post Office and Edna at First Volunteer Bank for their friendship and support; also, Tom, Tony and Edna at CVS for all their kindness and assistance for many years; and thank you, Cara, at the Beauty Clinic for 20-years of hair-fixing.

There will be no visitation and burial will be private.

Paul Bradshaw

Paul C. Bradshaw, 84, of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 22, at the Brainerd United Methodist Church with the Rev. Genevieve DeHoog officiating.

Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.

James Cook

James "Jimmy" Robert Cook, 62 of Chattanooga departed this life Monday, Jan. 18, 2010.

Jimmy retired from Sherman & Reilly after 42 years of service and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in East Ridge, member of Machinist Union 56 and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Duane Worley Sr., Elizabeth Cook Worley, and brother, Michael Worley.

Survivors include his loving wife of 42 years, Phyllis Ann Cook, of Chattanooga; children, Rodney Cook, of Ringgold, Karen (Paul) Bowman, of Birchwood, Tenn., and Richard (Jackie) Cook, of Alcoa, Tenn.; brothers, Duane (Cindy) Worley Jr. and Jackie (Sissy) Worley; uncle, Junior Cook, all of Chattanooga; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, in the chapel with Rev. Paul Bowman officiating.

Family will receive friends after 4 p.m. today, and prior to the service Thursday.

Sharon Enos

Sharon Kay Enos, 61, of East Ridge, passed away Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, surrounded by her loved ones.

She was a loving wife and mother, a devoted Nana and the most wonderful sister. She lost her battle with cancer but won her crown in Heaven. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She retired from Fibron/Synthetic Industries, was of the Baptist faith, but attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with her husband. She loved playing guitar and singing with her sister Robin and special friend Michelle Waterhouse.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Enos; sons, Steven Howard, Rick (Debbie) Enos and Terry Enos, all of Chattanooga; daughter, Karen (Pete) Daniel, of Peachtree City, Ga.; brothers, Mike and Tim Holloway, of Chattanooga; sisters, Jean Robinson, of Chattanooga, and Robin (Buddy) Blevins, of Cloudland, Ga.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and extended family Sheri Bradford and Darlene Blevins.

The family wishes to give a special thanks to the University of Oncology Staff and Hospice of Chattanooga Staff particularly Jeanie and Sheryl for all the care given to Kay.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at OLPH Catholic Church.

Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery.

Don Gilbert

Don W. Gilbert, 79, of East Ridge, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2010, at his home.

He was born Feb. 14, 1930, in Chattanooga to the late Gene Gilbert and Gladys Witt Gilbert.

Upon graduating from St. Andrew's High School in Sewanee, Tennessee, Mr. Gilbert joined the United States Air Force.

He was a member of American Legion Post 95 and participated in the Senior Citizens of East Ridge. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Marcy Gilbert; sons, Michael "Gus" Gary Gilbert and Daniel Gene Gilbert, both of East Ridge; daughters, Donna Kay Mitchell, of Decatur, Tenn., and Karen Frances Gilbert, of Ringgold; and two grandsons, Chris Gilbert, of Florida, and Shawn Mitchell, of Decatur.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Lakewood Memory Gardens, South, with the Rev. John Butler officiating.

The family will receive friends today from 5 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Doretha Ann Jackson-Rivers died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010.

She was born in Chattanooga on July 21, 1967.

Margaret Jernigan

Margaret Webster Jernigan, 93, of Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010.

Eula Martin

Eula Elizabeth Martin, 89, of Chattanooga, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, from a local nursing home.

She was a member of Bayside Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Frank and Lucy Sample.

She is survived by one daughter, Patricia Chandler, of Rossville; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral service will be held at graveside Thursday at 2 p.m. in Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Lloyd Harvill officiating.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Leonard Martof

Leonard "Leo/LJ" Martof passed away Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at his home in East Brainerd (Chattanooga). He was 85 years old and was born in Crucible, Pa., in 1924.

Leo was the son of Michael and Mary Bandish Martof of Carmichaels, Pa.

In World War II he served as a sergeant with the 34th Bomb Group in Europe and also participated in relief efforts after the war. He was a member of VFW Post 6303 in Greensboro, Pa. After the war he married Elizabeth Margetich of Jefferson, Pa., at St. Marcellus Church in Mather, Pa. They had two sons, Jim, who resides in Chattanooga and Tom, of Salem, Ohio.

Leo worked for U.S. Steel (Rubina Coal), Chrysler and retired from General Motors in Lordstown, Ohio, where he worked as a machinist/machine repair person and was a member of UAW Local 1112.

He is survived by his sons, six grandchildren along with two of five brothers and his sister.

A prayer service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at Lesako Funeral Home in Carmichaels, Pa.

The interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Crucible, Pa.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, from 2-4 p.m. at Lesako Funeral Home.

Genevieve Poe

Genevieve M. Poe, 92, of Apison, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, in a local nursing facility.

Mrs. Poe was a member of Apison Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Ollie Murphy; husband, L.H. Poe; son, Richard Lee Poe; and sister, Beatrice Hullendar.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Josephine Poe, Apison; grandchildren, Ronald D. Poe, Marion County, Tenn., Angela R. Parton and husband, Scott, Apison; great-grandchildren, Nicholas S. Parton and Scottie Parton; and brother, Wayne Murphy, Apison.

Alpha Ragland

Alpha "Alfie" E. Ragland, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, from complications of Alzheimer's disease.

Alpha was born in Henegar, Ala., on Jan. 7, 1930. She was a very talented self-taught seamstress and had worked at several different mills in the Chattanooga area. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of Ridgedale Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, R.W. "Rags" Ragland; her parents, Carlton and Beulah Roberts; two sisters, Ann Cook and Myrtle Tripp; an infant brother; one nephew; one niece; and numerous aunts and uncles.

She is survived by her son, Ernie Ragland, of Chattanooga; daughter, Mary Greene, of Rossville; granddaughter, Susan (Rick); great-grandsons, Joshua "T.J." Greene and Rickey Lee Turberville; sister, Marlene Tucker, of Henegar, Ala.; two nieces, Janice Steele and Kim Tripp; and two nephews, J.R. Tripp and Perry Cook.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be at noon Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at the funeral home with Dr. Bill Owens officiating and visitation one hour prior to the service.

Bill Smith

James William "Bill" Smith, 66, of Ooltewah, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010.

He was a man with a gentle and humble spirit and he considered it an honor to serve others. He was a former member of Daisy United Methodist Church. He retired as a sales representative in the steel packaging Industry. He was active in the United States Army Reserves. He was a member of Silverdale Baptist Church where he taught the Becoming One Sunday School Class and served as an usher. He was a Gideon and active in the Gideon International Central Camp. He volunteered with Hospice of Chattanooga.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Regina Bowen Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Guethlein Smith, of Ooltewah; daughter, Heather S. Clift, and her husband, Stephen, of Hixson; son, Andrew W. Smith, and his wife, Brittney, of Hixson; stepson, Lin Guethlein, and his wife, Karen, of Georgia; 11 grandchildren; brother, Robert Ray Smith and his wife, Barbara, of Hendersonville, Tenn.; two nephews; and a niece.

Private graveside services will be held today at Hamilton Memorial Park Cemetery which is located in the Dallas Bay Lakesite community.

A celebration of life service will be held today at 4 p.m. at Silverdale Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Walliser officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Becoming One Sunday School Class and David Ivey.

Sam Smith Sr.

Robert Samuel Smith Sr., 88, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010.

Mr. Smith was a native of the Bartlebaugh community. He served as a metal smith in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He retired from Interstate Blow Pipe Co.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Verna Evelyn Smith, and son, Robert S. Smith Jr.

Survivors include his children, Cheryl Murdock, of Rock Spring, Ga., Sandy Carter, of Rossville, Della Marie Ward, of Rossville, Mark S. Smith, of Rossville, Glenn A. Smith, of Lewiston, Idaho, and James R. Smith, Apple Valley, Calif.; beloved friend, Evelyn Dickerson; 35 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 20, 2010 at the North Chapel with grandson Robert Samuel Smith III officiating.

Interment will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

Judy Tate

Judy M. Tate, 72 , died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Judy was born in Atlanta, and was the daughter of the late Louis Camp and Daisy Page.

Judy was a devoted mother and grandmother and she loved her grandchildren more than life itself. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Chattanooga. Judy retired from SunTrust Bank (formerly American National Bank) after over 20 years of service as executive secretary to the president, chairman and to the board of directors.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 23 years, Clarence Lee Tate.

She is survived by her three children, Steve Tate, Greg Tate (Jimmy Peters) and Kim Tate (Bill) Reason; four grandchildren, Kathryn, Olivia, Madeleine and William, all of Chattanooga; and one sister, Phoebe (Guy) Tillman, and one brother, Stan (Bonnie) Camp, both of Atlanta. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home-East Chapel, 404 S. Moore Road and graveside services will be held at Chattanooga National Cemetery, 1200 Bailey Ave., immediately following the memorial service.

Archibald Willingham III

Archibald Calder Willingham III, Calder, Dad, Poppa, Poppie, and friend to many has died after a struggle with ALS Monday, Jan. 18, 2010. He was born Feb. 4, 1940.

He was born and raised on Lookout Mountain, Ga., and moved to downtown Chattanooga in 2001.

He was educated by Miss Caulkins, Bright School and Baylor School in Chattanooga. From there he attended the University of North Carolina and was graduated from University of Chattanooga in 1967 with a degree in Engineering Physics, and with a minor in Computer Science.

He married Betsy Martin in 1962. He is survived by children, Arch IV (Christine), of Lookout Mountain, Martin (Missy), of Macon, Ga., Phoebe, of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Michael (DeAnna), of Lookout Mountain; grandchildren, Betsy, Nick, Molly and Coleman Margetts, Summer, Mac and Anna Mercer Willingham, Elizabeth and Sara Willingham and Lawton, Dylan, Courtney and Calder Daniel Willingham; three siblings, James H. Willingham, Mike M. Willingham and Emeline W. Haney; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins

He was preceded in death by granddaughter, Jennifer Martin Willingham (Arch IV), and parents, Calder and Mary Alice Hedges Willingham.

He started his career with Combustion Engineering in the 1960s, working in the computer field, worked for several other local manufacturing firms, and formed his own computer software company (Calder Company) in 1988.

His interests have included board memberships in YMCA, Ladies of Charity, Heritage Landing Finance committee, Parish Eucharistic Minister for Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and he was a 25 gallon donor for Blood Assurance of Chattanooga.

Having spent many years as a hunter, Calder and Betsy started running at age 40 and ran until ALS stopped him in 2007. During those years he completed 10 marathons, many Half Ironman races and four full Ironman races. The last being 2005 and it was a personal best of 13 hrs. 26 minutes cutting 30 minutes off previous year race.

With everything he did, he did it with gusto and always went full out. His favorite saying was "Moderation is for Monks" and he had no problem telling you that, should you choose to be sitting on the sidelines.

Other interests were backpacking, scuba diving, the low country of South Carolina, Brook Green Gardens, cold beer, eating good and bad food with friends, fishing with his Mom and siblings in Florida and too many others to mention.

Calder's main interests were however his family. Every time he was surrounded by all the kids and grandkids he said, "This is what it's ALL about!!!"

When asked by the ALS foundation to site his proudest accomplishments he wrote, "My proudest accomplishments were marrying Betsy and fathering my wonderful children!"

A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, Jan. 21, at 3 p.m. and Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church with interment in the Memorial Garden to follow.

A party to celebrate Calder's life will begin at 5 p.m. at the Fairyland Club.

She had lived most of her life in Spring Place, Ga., and Ringgold.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Ida Etheridge Harris; husband, Frank Freeman; son and daughter-in-law, John and Wanda Freeman; sister, Mary Katherine Griffin; brother, Bobby Harris; and great-granddaughter, Sarah Peck.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Tommie Freeman, Calhoun, Ga., and Steve and Barbara Freeman, Winchester, Tenn.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Ed Kilgore, Cherokee, N.C., and Annette and Phil Tallent, Chattanooga; sister, Dorothy Harris Cabaniss, Adairsville, Ga.; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one stepgrandson; three stepgreat-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

Wanda Shrader

RINGGOLD -- Wanda Shrader, 73, died Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, in a local health care facility.

She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and North Georgia areas. Mrs. Shrader was a member of Boynton Baptist Church and the Joymakers Sunday School Class. She was retired from Combustion Engineering.

Mrs. Shrader was preceded in death by her husband, William Ottis Shrader.

CHATSWORTH -- Roy Wayne Smith, 61, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday from the chapel of Jones Funeral Home of Chatsworth.

Ruth Stone

ROSSVILLE -- Ruth Guffey Stone, 79, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, at a local hospital.

A Blue Ridge, Ga., native, she lived in the Rossville area most of her life, and was of the Church of God faith.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Chuck Murphy, of Rossville; grandson, Chuck Murphy Jr.(Rhonda), of Chickamauga; granddaughters, Tammy Henley and Angela Finley, both of Rossville; five great-grandchildren; brother, James Dillard, of Blue Ridge, Ga.; sister, Doris Perkins, of Birmingham; and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the South Crest Chapel with the Rev. Robert Rudeseal officiating.

Marvin McDaniel

HICKORY, N.C. -- Marvin "Mac" London McDaniel, 87, went to be with his beloved wife, Peg, on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010.

Mr. McDaniel passed away at Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley.

Mr. McDaniel was born August 19, 1922, in Ringgold, Ga. to the late DeeDee Monroe and Nettie McDaniel. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma "Peg" Sisemore McDaniel.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from Lockheed International as an International sales representative in 1975 and while in Hickory he worked for Lowes Home Improvement in tools until his 80s.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Mitch Witters, of Hickory; a grandson, Shawn Hughes, and wife, Tammy, of Chattanooga; a granddaughter, Quinn Mashuda, and husband, Tom; two great-granddaughters, McKenzie and Samantha; and one nephew.

Services will be held for Mr. McDaniel at a later date.
