Attorney general candidate admits affair

ATLANTA - A Republican candidate for attorney general has acknowledged an extramarital affair with a former staffer, but says the relationship began after the woman was no longer an employee.

State Sen. Preston Smith, R-Rome, told The Associated Press on Thursday the woman left his office in 2003. He says the relationship began in 2004, adding he has never dated anyone employed by his office or his campaign.
