Virginia Bedwell

Virginia Sims Bedwell, 78, of East Ridge, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2010, at a local hospital.

She was a native of Flat Rock, Ala., and had lived most of her life in East Ridge where she worked at Eckerd's for many years as a Pharmaceutical Tech. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in East Ridge and will always be remembered for her kindness and willingness to open her home to anyone in need.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arlie J. Bedwell; and parents, Rufus and Emaline Sims.

Survivors include her son, Michael (Susan) Bedwell, of Chattanooga; two daughters, Kathy Goins and Gail Bedwell, both of Chattanooga; five grandsons, Michael "Tye" (Donna) Bedwell, of Chickamauga, Samuel Bedwell, of Chattanooga, Thomas Bedwell, of Pensacola, Fla., David Pendergrass, of Chattanooga, and Michael Taylor, of Chattanooga; three great-grandchildren; and several very dear friends.

Alvin Cagle

Alvin Ray Cagle, 71, of Signal Mountain, died Sunday, March 7, 2010.

He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in New Orleans. Had education in Business Accounting and he retired from the Town of Signal Mountain Public Works Department after 25 years of service.

He was a loving and devoted father and grandfather, he will be greatly missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Loy Cagle and mother, Mary Olena Cagle.

He is survived by a son, Harvey Alan Cagle, Signal Mountain; daughter, Alva Jean (Michael) Thompson, Signal Mountain; grandchildren, Carrie (Jesse Harvey) Cagle, Cagle Mountain, Cherrie (Josh) Hall, William (Beth) Hicks, Dunlap, Chrissy and Lauren Thompson, Signal Mountain; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Seretha Jo Hammers, Melva Jean (EJ) Millwood, Signal Mountain, Connie (Venus) White and Beverly (Danny) Edwards, both of Dayton; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. CST in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Stacy Seals and Dr. Steven Granger officiating.

Rudy Calambro

Rudy Calambro, 81, of Hixson, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2010.

He was born in Fort. Stotstenberg, Pampanga, Philippines.

Mr. Calambro was an electrical Engineer and retired from Tennessee Valley Authority. He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church.

Rudy is survived by his wife of 56 years, Thelma Calambro; three daughters, Maria Cooper and her husband, Jim and their daughter, Jaimee, of Hixson; Ruth Hanna and her husband, Steve and their son, Erik, of Springville, Calif.; Lynne Johnson and her husband, Gene and their sons, Chris and Wes, of Hixson.

A Memorial Service will be held at noon on Thursday at St. Jude Catholic Church, 930 Ashland Terrace, with Father Charles Burton officiating.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon on Thursday at the church.

Burial will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Thurman Cole, 85, of Chattanooga, passed Friday, March 5, 2010.

He was preceded in death by parents, Will and Vinnie Cole; brother, James Cole, sister, Louise Watkins.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted caregiver, Mrs. Barbara Pride; son, Thurman Grey; daughter, Marie (Ray) Burks; brother, Arthur (Erma) Cole, Obie Cole, Sodie Cole; sisters, Elsie Brown, Mary (Noble) Tolliver, Geraldine Strickland; three grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends; very dear friend, C.W. Bill Collins

William T. "Bill" Collins, 81, of Chattanooga formerly of Cordova, Md., passed away Monday, March 8, 2010 in a local hospital.

He was born April 10, 1928 in Cordova, Md.

Mr. Collins was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and was retired from the United States Airforce after 21 years of service. He was a member of the Retired Sergeants Association and the Marimont Garden Club.

His parents, Ralph Collins and Mary Collins Voshell preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 58 1/2 years, Rose Collins; children, Mary Collins, of Chattanooga, Connie Frankenberry, of Pineville, La., and Gary Collins, of Orlando, Fla.; brother, Ivan Collins, of Easton, Md.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 11, at 5 p.m. at the East Brainerd Chapel with Father Jim Vick officiating.

Kermit Croft

Kermit L. Croft, 91, of Hixson, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2010.

He was born in DeKalb County, Ala., to the late Stella and Fred Croft. He graduated from DeKalb County High School in 1940. He served in WW II from 1941 to 1945 as a member of the 2nd Armored Division.

He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Hixson and retired from Dixie Yarns after 47 years of service. He was a Mason and member of the Order of Eastern Star.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Irma Dean Croft; son, Tommy Croft; sisters, Ellie Harris and Louise Battle; granddaughter, Cheril Edwards.

Survivors include sons, Kenneth (Dianne) Croft and Robert Croft; stepchildren, Tom (Ina) Shelton and Vera Tanner; brother, Lloyd Croft; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Dr. Darreyl Duggar officiating.

Burial will be at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Aaron Darden Jr.

Aaron Darden Jr., 81, passed away Friday, March 5, 2010, at a local hospital.

He served his country in the U.S. Army. He was employed at Southeastern Meats.

Survivors include his sons, Stevie and Roland Darden; Martha Strickland and Shelia Oliver; grandchildren, Tammy, Tony, Chanel, Roland Jr., Chanice, Micah; a host of great-granchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at National Cemetery with Rev. Jimmie Ingram officiating.

The body will lie in state after noon today at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.

Geneva German

Geneva German of Chattanooga passed away Saturday, March 6, 2010, at her daughter's home after a lengthy illness.

Geneva was born Aug. 14, 1925. Geneva retired from Dixie Yarns after 44 years of service. She had been an active member of the East Lake Association and East Lake Seniors where they still talk about her homemade biscuits.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mae and Clyde Wooten; sister, Dean Brown; brothers, Bill, Hobart, and Riley Wooten.

Geneva is survived by her husband, Earl German; daughter, Diane (Charles) Rizzo; granddaughter, Christi (Scott) Underwood; two grandsons, Christopher and Jonathan Underwood; sisters Genell Clayton, Reida Jones, Dayton, Tenn., Nancy (Bobby) Bolton, Dayton, Deborah Thomas, Grand Prairie, Texas; brothers, Don (Bonnie) Wooten, Grand Prairie, Eugene Wooten, Dayton,and Larry (Brenda) Wooten, Dayton.

On April 5, 2010, Geneva and Earl would have been married 67 years.

Funeral services will 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010 in the J. Avery Bryan Chapel with the Rev. Edward Gasaway officiating.

Burial will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Visitation will be today, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Helen Duff Lockwood, 93, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, March 6, 2010, in a local healthcare facility.

Helen's claims to fame were her sense of humor, enriching everyone's life she met and her extraordinary cooking abilities. She was a tireless worker and devoted member of the Girl Scouts, Chattanooga Boys Choir, Kosmos Woman's Club, Manchester Park and Datonia Garden Clubs and Erlanger Pink Ladies. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church.

Her husband, Lemont Ross Lockwood, and sisters, Chloe Brandon and Edna Rose preceded her in death.

Survivors include her son, Lamont (Debby) Lockwood, of Plano, Texas; daughter, Linda (Ray) Towers, of Red Bank; grandsons, Tommy and Robert Lockwood, Kevin (Meredith) Garner and Chris (Nicole) Garner; great-grandsons, Christian and Ethan Garner and Jake and Jamie Garner.

Graveside services will be held today at 10 a.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Harold Buck officiating.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Billy Dean Martin, 76, of Chattanooga passed away on Saturday, March 6, 2010.

He served in the U.S. Army and was retired from DuPont after several years of service.

Billy was an avid golfer and was a former member of Creeks Bend Golf Course.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Lula Martin; one infant child, Phyllis Martin; brothers and sisters, Suzie Jane Moore Bidwell, Pearl Bledsoe, Mike Martin, Eva Mae Emery, Tom Martin, Bertha Emery, Jim Martin, Jesse Martin, Luke Martin, Betty Martin.

Survivors include his three daughters, Billie (Mike) Allen, Marcia Martin, Sylvia Martin; four grandchildren, Aaron Allen, Ian Allen, Trey Allen, Kasey Allen; Judy Martin; sister, Mary Ann Holder; several friends, nieces and nephews.

Jane Windle Miles, 50, of Signal Mountain, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2010, at her home.

She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher and past parish council member. Jane was a PTA Board member at Signal Mountain Middle High School. She was a graduate of Notre Dame High School and attended ETSU in Johnson City, Tenn., and UTC. She was a preschool teacher at Signal Crest United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Janet Leland Windle; and her father-in-law, William L. Miles.

Survivors include her husband, Samuel "Chris" Miles; three children, Lance Lawson, Sarah and Christopher Miles; father, David Windle; three sisters, Kathleen (Billy) Driver, Meg (Taylor) Walker and Anne (Brett) Lawrence; nieces and nephews, David, Daniel and Kaitlin Driver, Lauren, Lindsey and Kristen Walker, and Rebecca, Catherine, Grace and Stephen Lawrence; mother-in-law, Beverley (Bill) Cleary; she will also be missed by her extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins which include, the Sompayrac and Spittler families.

A funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 1716 Anderson Pike, Signal Mountain, with Monsignor Alan Humbrecht officiating.

Thomas E. Penney, 85, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Sunday, March 7. 2010.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, and was retired from Lookout Boiler. He was a member of Christ Family Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Penney.

Survivors include his son, Leland (Kathy) Penney, of Soddy-Daisy; and daughter, Lois (Troy) Green, of Fort Oglethorpe; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

ROSSVILLE - Carolyn Diana Barton went home to be with the Lord Sunday, March 7, 2010 in a local hospital.

She was 63 and lived in North Georgia for most of her life. She was known as the community "mom" and "granny".

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Henry Hicks and Voncile Helton Hicks; and brother, David Wayne Hicks.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Roy Gene Barton; daughters, Sonya (Buddy Sr.) Braziel, Jeannean (Lewis Jr.) Gravitt; son, Doug Barton; brothers, Alan (Jan) Hicks, Donald (Janice) Hicks; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; special nieces and nephews.

Johnnie was a co-owner of Dobbies Super Market with his brother, Oliver "Dobbie" Dobson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Emma Brock Dobson; sister, Doris Scoggins; brothers, Oliver and LeRoy Dobson.

Survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Frances Murdock Dobson; daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Ronald Underwood; son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Jane Dobson; sisters, Bernice Brown, Virginia "Sug" Dobson; brother and sister-in-law, William "Bill" and Sammie Dobson, all of LaFayette, sister-in-law, Georgia Dobson, Tennessee; grandchildren, Gerald (Melanie) Underwood, Scott (Lou Rea) Underwood, Holly (Boyd) Greene, Julie (Joe) Psaila; great-grandchildren, Lance, Clayton, Ansley, Bergen and Traven Underwood and Trent Psaila; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral from the Wallis Memorial Chapel Wednesday at 2 p.m. Service conducted by the Rev. Mike Peterson, the Rev. George Turnipseed, Mr. Kenny White.

Pallbearers are Gerald, Traven, Scott, Lance and Clayton Underwood, Boyd Greene and Joe Psaila.

Honorary pallbearers are nephews.

Interment in LaFayette Memory Gardens.

Howard Fletcher Sr.

ROSSVILLE -Howard Dewayne Fletcher Sr., 72, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2010.

He was born in Grove Oak, Ala., to the late Robert Howard and Ruby Joyce Fletcher, but had lived in the Rossville area for most of his life and was of the Baptist faith.

He retired from Ancor Glass Co. in 1993 after more than 20 years of service, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his loving wife of more than 52 years, Barbara "Bobbie" Fletcher; mother-in-law, Juanita Bizzoco; two sons, Howard Fletcher Jr. and Tony Fletcher, all of Rossville; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010, in the Fort Oglethorpe Chapel with Pastor Thomas Long officiating.

Burial will be held at 3:30 p.m. EST in Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Grove Oak, Ala.

The family will receive friends after 2 p.m. today and prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

LAKEVIEW - Katherine Morrow Huckabee, 88, passed away Saturday, March 6, 2010, at a local hospital.

RINGGOLD - Jay William O'Donnell, 51, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2010, at a local hospital.

A native of Virginia, he was a resident of the Ringgold area for the past 40 years. He was an employee of Deakins Automotive and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Curtis and Daisey O'Donnell and Myrtle Love.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Amanda (Wayne) Deskins, of Smyrna, Tenn.; stepson, Jamie McGee, of Ringgold parents, John and Bobbie O'Donnell, of Ringgold; two sisters, Sherry J. (Jimmy) McKinney, of Niota, Tenn., and Mary (Tony) Lewis, of Ringgold; brother; James (Nancy) O'Donnell, of Ringgold; two grandchildren, Jordan and Norah Jean Deskins; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel.

Interment will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends today from 4-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 8 a.m. until funeral time at the funeral home.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alva Lee Spence; father, H.B. Spence Sr. and mother, Hattie Mae Crow; son, Donnie Trammel; brother, Robert Spence; sisters, Joann Hopkins and Minnie Lee Wilholt.

LaFAYETTE - George Madison "M.G." Vaughn, 76, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2010, at a local health care facility.

He was a native of Cherokee County, Ala., had lived most of his life in Chattanooga, and had moved to Lafayette in 1993 following his retirement. Mr. Vaughn was a carpenter who had worked for Chris Craft Boats in Chattanooga and also with Currey Contractors. He was an outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed fishing and camping. He was of the Baptist faith and will be missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mamie Louise Vaughn; parents, William and Lucille Vaughn; and four sisters.

Survivors include five children, Velvie Bailey, of Valley Head, Ala., Darlene (Terry) Lumpkin, of Lafayette, Rickey (P.J.) Vaughn, of Cherokee County Ala., Steve (Charlotte) Vaughn, of Chattanooga, and Jan Stout, of Chattanooga; two brothers; four sisters; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
