Public comment sought for Tremont plans in Smokies

GATLINBURG, Tenn. - Officials at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are seeking comments on planned improvements at the park's educational institute.

Buildings at the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont (TREE'-mont) are four decades old. Park officials say the structures are deteriorating and no longer meet the needs of the institute's programs.

Five alternative plans are posted on the park's planning Web site.

Public comment is being taken until April 15 through the Web site.

Printed copies of the proposals can be seen at park headquarters in Gatlinburg; visitor centers at Sugarland and Oconaluftee or at public libraries in communities around the park.
