Tony Cantrell

Paul Anthony Cantrell, 46, of East Ridge, died Friday, March 19, 2010.

Tony was preceded in death by his father, Paul Franklin Cantrell; brother, Mark Cantrell; and sister, Nelda Cantrell.

Surviving are two sons, Brian Anthony Cantrell and Kyle Cantrell; daughter, Krista Cantrell; mother, Imogene Roberts Cantrell; brothers, David Cantrell, Mike Cantrell and Joe Cantrell; sister, Tammy Cantrell; and grandchild, Dylan Bazan.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 27, in the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home, the Rev. David Bragg officiating.

Interment will follow in New McDonald Cemetery.

Carol Carter

Carol McDonald Carter, 79 died Monday, March 22, 2010, at her home in Williamsburg, Va.

She was a native of Chattanooga and was a graduate of the Class of 1953 at the University of Chattanooga, where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.

She is survived by her husband, LTC William C. Carter, U.S. Army (Retired); son, Douglas C. Carter and wife, Tina Carter, of Newport News, Va.; daughter, Kathryne E. Lemon and husband, Captain Douglas M. Lemon, U.S. Navy, of Smithfield, Va.; grandsons, William Lake Carter, of Newport News, Va., Matthew Donald Lemon and David Charles Lemon, of Smithfield, Va.; granddaughter, Sarah Helen Lemon, of Smithfield, Va.; and sister, Betty Miller, of Irving, Texas.

Carol was a member of Denbigh Presbyterian Church, Newport News, Va., and had served several terms as an elder.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested for the Denbigh Presbyterian Memorial Fund, or other favorite charities.

There is visitation today, March 24, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 12893 Jefferson Ave., Newport News, Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 25, 1 p.m. at Denbigh Presbyterian Church, Newport News, Va.

Interment will follow at Penninsula Memorial Park.

Edwin Crowe

Edwin Freeman Crowe, 75, of Hixson, passed away Monday, March 22, 2010.

He loved his family dearly and he will be greatly missed. Mr. Crowe served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a retired Ironworker from Local #706 and he attended Lupton Drive Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harrul and Mary Crowe, and brothers, Dallas Crowe, Noah "Tinkie" Crowe and Willard McAndrews.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Frances Crowe; children, Russell (Charlotte) Crowe, Danny (Dixie) Crowe, Jerry (Taria ) Crowe, Ray (Cheryl) Crowe, Chris (Teresa) Crowe, Denise (Barry) Harris, Rickey (Harmony) Crowe, Brenda (Mike) Walker; sister, Christine Lawson; 37 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 25, 2010, at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Don Kelley and the Rev. Randy Bell officiating.

Burial will follow in Millsap Cemetery.

Robert Dobbs

Robert Eugene Dobbs, 91, of Chattanooga, formerly of Fort Payne, Ala., passed away Monday, March 22, 2010.

He as a veteran of the Air Force serving in World War II. He was retired from the Chattanooga Electric Power Board where he was a supervisor.

Funeral services will be 4:30 p.m. CDT today at Wilson Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial following in Glenwood Cemetery.

Lonnie Edwards

Lonnie Dennis Edwards, 73, of Soddy-Daisy, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, March 23, 2010.

Lonnie was born at home on March 9, 1937, in Rhea County to Thomas and Lilly Edwards. On May 19, 1959, he was married to the love of his life, Jo Ann Chamberlain. They raised six children together and were married for 50 years. Lonnie was a retired truck driver and a member of Abba's House.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jo Ann Chamberlain Edwards; children, Lonnie (Gayle) Edwards, Diane (Todd) Jordan, Darrell (Arlene) Edwards, Doug Edwards, Lisa (Gerald) Matthews and Randall Edwards; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Lilly Edwards; brothers, Major, Lonas, Roger, Mayford, John Carlos and Donald; and sisters, Clara, Bertha, Willie, Susie and Mable.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 25, 2010, at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Joe Guthrie officiating.

Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday.

Burial will follow in Spring City Memorial Gardens.

Erick Ellis

Erick Anderson Ellis, 26, Chattanooga, went to be with the Lord on Saturday March 20, 2010.

Erick was full of life living it to the fullest and was a loving father, son, brother, and grandson.

He was preceded in death by maternal grandmothers, Annie Reels and Nancy Ellis.

He is survived by his girlfriend, Misty McGhee; daughter, Skylar McKenzie; mother, Sheri Ellis; brother, Joseph Crisp; sister, Sumer Crisp; grandmother, Elizabeth Cooper; grandfather, Albert Anderson Ellis; nephew, Brenton Crisp; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He will be loved and missed.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the chapel with Dr. Perry McCallen officiating.

Charlie Franklin, 80, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2010, in Hixson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Lee Franklin; sisters, Shelby Lee Hood, Georgia Mae Hood, Barbara Jean Franklin and Arlene Franklin; and brothers, George Franklin Jr. and Richard Franklin.

Survivors include his longtime companion, Brenda Craig; sons, Tracy Sr. (Adriane) and Fred (Latonda) Hunter, of Chattanooga, and Charles Hinton, Corpus Christi, Texas; daughters, Diane Smith and Wanda Franklin; brothers, William (Phyllis) Franklin and Johnny Bob Franklin, of Atlanta; sisters, Elnora (Ollie) Davis, Seattle, Wash., Elsie Collins, Louise Franklin and Doris Boozer, all of Chattanooga, JoAnne (John Arthur) Strozier, Rose Marie (Joe) Ellison and Annette Franklin, of Atlanta; grandson, Tracy Hunter Jr.; and granddaughter, Chantalle Hinton.

Stephanie Rena Jones, 38, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, March 19, 2010, in a local hospital.

She attended Howard High School and was formerly employed by Sathers Candy Co.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jimmy Williams.

Lois Annette Medlen, 50, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 21, 2010, from a local hospital.

She was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her by her father, William Barbee; husband, Gary Medlen; grandparents, Elmer and Marie Phillips and Bill and Annie Barbee; and several aunts and uncles.

She is survived by her mother, Mary Barbee, of Harrison; two sons, Gary and Jonathan Medlen, of Harrison; one brother, Billy Barbee, of Harrison; four sisters, Gayle Hendrickson, Darlene Frady, both of Harrison, Kathy Moses, of Lebanon, Tenn., and Debbie Bonner, of Ringgold; three grandchildren, Courtney, Madison and Matthew Medlen; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

John Payne

John Franklin Payne, 74, of Concord, N.C., passed away Saturday, March 20, 2010, at CMC NorthEast.

A visitation will be held at Chattanooga Funeral Home in Hixson on Saturday, March 27, 2010, from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel at 2 p.m. following the visitation.

Burial will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens in Hixson.

He was born on March 27, 1935, in Franklin County, Tenn., to the late John Henry Payne and Mary Magdalene Case Payne.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mabel; sons, Terrell Payne, of Swannanoa, N.C., and Anthony Payne, of Knoxville; daughter, Tonya Padilla, and husband, Kristopher, of Concord; brother, Ray Payne, and wife, Phyllis, of Dayton, Tenn.; and grandchildren Kassie, Ryan, Chase, Alyssa and Rylan.

Frank graduated from Hixson High School, Tenn., Class of '54. He attended Poplar Grove Baptist Church in Concord and was a retired circuit board technician with IBM. Frank enjoyed spending quality time with his entire family.

Charles Rizzo

Charles Augustus Rizzo, 78, died Monday, March 22, 2010, at his home.

He was an amazing man who endured many illnesses for the past 14 years. He never gave up and his hobby of making beautiful wooden clocks and bowls kept him busy up to the end. He retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Previously he worked as the Director of Safety of the Northeast Region for the U.S. Postal Authority in Philadelphia, Pa. He traveled all over the United States making speeches while he was employed with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. He also was a locksmith and carpenter and had built several homes in Cincinnati, Ohio, and also in New Jersey as well as his final home in Chattanooga. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and graduated from Xavier University.

After college, he entered the U.S. Army and served a year in Japan. He was an avid pool player and played on 9-ball and 8-ball leagues at the Chattanooga Billiard Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Ruth Rizzo.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; daughters, Angelique Rusch and Roslyn (Ron) Hopkins, of New Jersey, Theodosia (Jerome) Svinicki, of Virginia, Jacinta Kavanaugh, of Florida, and Christi (Scott) Underwood, of Georgia; sister, Adrian (Hollie) Johnson, of Kentucky; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

A Mass of celebration will be held at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Doris Lawrence Sheeley, 86, of Chattanooga, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, March 22, 2010.

Doris was a member of Brainerd Hills Baptist church and the Ruth Sunday School Class. She was a dedicated wife, loving mother and doting grandmother who loved spoiling her "eight precious blessings." She was actively involved with her community club for many years, currently serving as Historian.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Henry Arthur Sheeley Jr., and their five children and spouses and eight grandchildren, Sarigene "Sara" (Steve) Newberry, Rebekah and Connar Newberry, of McKinney, Texas; Ethelyn "Lynn" (Terry) Blackwell, Christopher and Kelsey Blackwell, of Ringgold; Eunice (Alan) McGill, of Ringgold; Henry Arthur (Pam) Sheeley III, Allison and Faith Sheeley, of Easley, S.C.; and Lawrence "Larry" (Brenda) Sheeley, Lawrence and Sydney Sheeley, of Ooltewah.

Betty Solomon

Betty Johnson Solomon, 71, of East Brainerd, passed away Tuesday, March 23, 2010, in a local hospital.

A native of Smyrna, Tenn., she had spent the past 30 years in the Chattanooga area and was retired from Nephrology Associates following 25 years of service. Betty was a member of First-Centenary United Methodist Church, the Chancel Choir and the Scenic City Chorale. She had served as pianist and organist at area churches, was a member of the Chattanooga Medical Group Managers, the Tennessee Medical Group Managers and the American Contract Bridge League.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George Edwin and Mattie Lou Johnson; brother, Ed Jordan Johnson; infant brother, Robert Johnson; and nephew, Jeffrey Steven Johnson.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Garry McGowan, Port Orange, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Becky Johnson, Knoxville; grandchildren, Brittany Jones, Nashville, Kellan McGowan, Chattanooga, and Hunter McGowan, Port Orange, Fla.; sister-in-law, Lucy Johnson; niece, Julie Carpenter and family; and nephew, David Johnson and family, all of Nashville.

David Hall

CLEVELAND -- David Grant Hall, 87, lifelong resident of Cleveland, died Sunday, March 7, 2010, after a long fight with Parkinson's and diabetes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edna Hobbs Hall and John Grant Hall. He graduated from Bradley High in 1941 and UT Knoxville in 1949.

Dave grew up in St Luke's congregation, served as an alter boy and usher and church members set their clocks by him until he grew too ill to attend services.

In World War II he flew 25 combat missions as a B-17 copilot, earning the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and Distinguished Unit Badge. Dave lived for his sports, from high school place kicker (scoring 22 of the 25 points his senior year) to shooting sporting clays at age 83. He started water skiing at 37, and won three dozen trophies in five years. The Old Timer's Club Hall of Fame inducted him as the first Water Skier in 2001. He was also an avid bowler and golfer for many years.

Dave got his first motorcycle at 55, his last at 78, and rode every state in the lower 48. One 4500 mile trip with 8 friends was organized by Ed's Cycles and filmed for Yamaha.

He was married three times: to Dorothy Love, of Athens, Lillian Davis Vedder, of Sumter S.C., and Eunice J. Hill, of Chattanooga. He is survived by brother, George T. Hall, of Tyler, Texas; daughters, Sherry Hall Hagstrom, of Bainbridge Island, Wash., and Beth Hall Fordham, of Sumter, S.C.; sons, Mark K. Hall, of Cleveland, and Joe Hall, of San Diego, Calif., also Nickie Samuelson, of Cleveland, and Randy Carroll, of Chattanooga. He leaves 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2010, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

Friends are invited to join the family for a remembrance celebration one hour prior to the service at St. Luke's Parish Hall.

TRACY CITY -- Mahlon Nelson Sanders, 50, died Monday, March 22, 2010, in Erlanger hospital in Chattanooga.

Anne Shofner

NASHVILLE-Anne Shields Shofner died peacefully in her sleep at her home at The Blakeford in Nashville on the morning of Wednesday, March 10, 2010, two weeks, to the day, after her 99th birthday.

She is survived by her daughter, Dee Shofner Doochin (Jerald), and her grandson, Adam Emory Doochin.

She also is survived by stepgrandchildren, Michael Doochin (Linda Kartoz), Teri Doochin Kasselberg (AG) and Larry Doochin (Janice); and stepgreat-grandchildren, Jill Kasselberg Williams (Matt), Douglas Kasselberg, Matthew Wolf (Sarah), Jonathan Doochin, Arielle Doochin, Andrea Wolf, Jeremy Doochin, Sarah Doochin, Thomas Doochin, David Doochin, Megan Kasselberg and Hannah Doochin. In addition, she is survived by nephews, Wes Shofner (Carolyn), Martin Shofner (Corabel), Stewart Shofner (Audrey) and Michael Shofner; cousin, Lew Conner (Ashley); as well as nieces and nephews, Walter Fugate (Susan), Judi Bayless, Ginie Forester (Mike), Nicki Marshall, Jim Wardlaw (Charlotte), Buddy Shields, Debbie Clark, David Wardlaw (Christi), Charley Shields (Kathy), Joan Fowler (Craig) and Mike Shields (Sharen); other cousins; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

Anne was born in Bowersville, Ga., on Feb. 24, 1911, second of the six children of Dr. Harold Franklin Shields and Jessie Carlock Shields, who were both direct descendants of the settling families of Walker County, Ga. She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her five siblings, Frances Wing, Thelma Pons, Doris Fugate, Dr. Harold Franklin Shields, Jr. and Parke Wardlaw. Anne grew up in Chickamauga, Ga., and attended Bessie Tift College and Agnes Scott College.

While working for TVA, she met Emory Monroe Shofner, a direct descendant of the settling families of Bedford County, Tenn., and Hamilton County, Tenn., whom she married in 1936. Emory and Anne spent four years moving around with TVA and 21 years, when Emory was serving in the USAF, continuing the joys and challenges of moving while living in Europe, Labrador and in many eastern, midwestern and southern states. In 1961, they retired to Shelbyville, Tenn., to build their dream house on their farm. Unfortunately, that never happened, as Emory unexpectedly died in 1965. Anne remained in Shelbyville until 2001, when she moved to The Blakeford. She served as president of many Officers' Wives Clubs; Regent of the Shelby Chapter Daughters' of the American Revolution (DAR), where she was a 50+ year member; president of the Women of the Church, 1st Presbyterian Church; president of the Laureate Delta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority; president of the Volunteer Garden Club; and was a certified Flower Show Judge. She also was an officer and a very active member of the Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities (APTA), a member of the Ladies' Hermitage Association and a member of the Shelbyville Women's Club. Anne loved to travel and saw most of the world, continuing to take trips abroad into her middle 80s. She loved and appreciated anything beautiful. She was a devoted flower gardener and arranger, collector of antiques, expert seamstress and craftsperson, and she also caned her own antique dining room chairs. She was a member of The First Presbyterian Church of Shelbyville and Shofner Lutheran Chapel, in Bedford County, Tenn. Anne's daughter thanks the wonderful residents and staff of The Blakeford for their friendship, and the Band of Angels for their loving care during Anne's last 5+ years, with special thanks to Leeann Baker, Jessica Parish, Susan Waldon, Jeanetta King, Tia Roberts, Shellie Stevens, Donna Brinkman, Cassie Cunningham, Renate von Lissen, Marcia Martin, Marit Skelton and Ginia Wood Anglin.

A celebration of Anne's Life will be lead by Pastor Richard Smith and the Rev. Stephen Caine on Saturday, March 27, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Shofner Lutheran Chapel, 2884 Highway 41-A, Shelbyville, TN 37160 (at the junction of Highway 41-A and Shofner Road).

Visitation and a picnic lunch will follow the service.

Pallbearers will be Adam Doochin, Larry Doochin, Matthew Wolf, Wes Shofner, Martin Shofner, Stewart Shofner, Michael Shofner and Lew Conner.

Honorary pallbearers are her son-in-law, remaining nieces, nephews, stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

James Davis

RINGGOLD -- James Franklin Davis, 59, departed this life Friday, March 19, 2010.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Air Force, where he served in the Vietnam War. James retired from city of Fort Oglethorpe after many years of service, and was a volunteer fireman with Post Volunteer Fire Department in Fort Oglethorpe.

James was preceded in death by his father, Leon Davis.

Survivors include his loving spouse of 42 years, Pat Davis, of Ringgold; children, Michael (Mary) Davis, of Mobile, Ala., and Cynthia (Tony) Womac, of Ringgold; mother, Georgina "Jo" Jones, of Lincolnton, N.C.; and grandchildren, Loryn, Kaitlyn, Kathleen, Kortney and Sydney.

Rev. William Harvey

FORT OGLETHORPE -- The Rev. William F. Harvey, 92, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, in a local health care facility.

He was in the ministry for over 40 years and had pastored several churches in the East Tennessee and North Georgia area. He was a member of Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church and had also worked as a welder.

The Rev. Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, Will and Carrie Harvey; his first wife of 51 years, Daisy Marine Harvey; three brothers, and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife of 13 years, Hattie Harvey; two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Ray Young and Geri and Tim Hankins; grandchildren and their spouses, Carla and Dave Dageforde, Kirk and Pam Young, Alisa and Leroy Davis, Brian and Brenda Hankins, and Suzanne and Hugh Watkins; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Herman (Frances) Harvey; a sister, Mary Sue Arp; Hattie's children, Steve and Kathy Robinson, Thomas and Melissa Robinson, John and Shannon Robinson, Michal and Barry Jones; and 12 grandchildren.

Charles McCurdy

RISING FAWN -Charles "Mac" William McCurdy, died March 21, 2010, at an East Ridge Tenn., nursing home.

Born Sept. 22,1916, on Puddin Ridge, Dade County, Ga., the residence of his grandfather, William Jesse West, on Mountain View Fruit Farm. He resided many years in Hamilton County where he was the youngest member of the local Motion Picture Projectionist Union. He owned and operated Mac's Gun and Tackle business near Chickamauga Dam before moving his business to Rising Fawn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine McDonald McCurdy; his father, Lochrane McCurdy; and his mother, Cora West McCurdy.

He is survived by his daughter, Elicia Jane McCurdy; sister, Martha Riddle Schwartz; nephew, Charles S. Riddle III; niece, Catherine Riddle Caffey and Lochlin W. Caffey Jr.; and great-niece, Catherine Anne Caffey, all of Nashville.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. EDT Thursday in the Chapel of Moore Funeral Home with Dr. Curtis Scholfield officiating.

Burial will be held at Chickamauga City Cemetery.

CHICKAMAUGA -- Charles Thomas Tinsley, 66, died Monday, March 22, 2010, in a local hospital.

Mr. Tinsley enjoyed reading, his family and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Nelson Tinsley, and son Charles Tinsley.

Survivors are his wife of 39 years, Carolyn Tinsley; mother, Billie Tinsley, Cleveland, Tenn.; sons, Robert (Karen) Tinsley, Chattanooga, and Michael (April) Tinsley, Chickamauga; daughter, Diana (John) Smith, Somerville, Ala.; brother, William Tinsley, Connecticut; sisters, Barbara Adams, Cleveland, Tenn., and Sharon Bowman, McDonald, Tenn.; and eight grandchildren.

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Edith Giddens Tribble, 89, died Tuesday, March 23, 2010, in Trenton, Ga.

Mrs. Tribble was born Aug. 29, 1921, and graduated from Scottsboro High School in Scottsboro, Ala.

Mrs. Edith Tribble, widow of Homer E. Tribble resided in Clarksville, Tenn., from 1969 to 1997 when she returned to her home on Lookout Mountain, Ga. Mrs. Tribble was an active member of First Baptist Church and a member of the Eastern Star.

She was very talented and won several ceramic awards. She was a member of the Poet's Society and had several poems published.

Survivors are her sister, Zelda Ann Giddens, of Section, Ala., and four brothers, Jack B. Giddens, of Scottsboro, Ala.; Elmo L. Giddens, of Lookout Mountain, Ga.; Gary F. Giddens, of Lookout Mountain; and James L. Giddens, of Lookout Mountain.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2010, at Wann Funeral Home, at the foot of Lookout Mountain with visitation at 1 p.m.

BRYANT -- Charles Lee "Boo" Douglas, 70, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 17, 2010.

He was born Aug. 29, 1939. He served in the United States Navy and was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William "Coot" Douglas and Verna Mae Douglas, and one brother, Leon Douglas.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lottie B. Douglas; daughter, Kathy Lloyd; grandson, Justin "Pug" Lloyd, all of Bryant, Ala.; granddaughter and husband, Erica and Daniel Arnold; two great-grandsons, Korbin Reed and Karter Arnold, all of Louisiana; two brothers, W.L. Douglas and Jerry Douglas and wife, Rita, of Dunlap, Tenn.; one sister and husband, Pauline and Cliff Osment, McMinnville, Tenn.; 16 brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. EDT Saturday in the chapel of Moore Funeral Home with the Rev. Ed McKinney officiating.

Interment with military honors was in Oak Lawn Memorial Park.
