Group to rally in favor of Cesar Chavez holiday

ATLANTA - Latino community leaders and several state lawmakers plan to rally at the Georgia state Capitol in support of declaring a holiday on the birthday of Latino labor activist Cesar Chavez.

The Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials is sponsoring the rally at the Capitol Wednesday morning. The group says Democratic State Sen. Nan Orrock of Atlanta and Democratic state representatives Pedro Marin of Duluth and Rashad Taylor of Atlanta plan to attend.

Chavez, a Mexican American, worked to organize mostly Hispanic farm workers beginning in the 1960s. Some states have already declared his March 31 birthday a holiday, and GALEO would like to see it made a national holiday.
