Giants look, well, really big

San Francisco pounded the Rangers again last night in the World Series - hammering Texas' bullpen in a 9-0 Game 2 win. The Giants have a 2-0 lead, have outscored the Rangers 20-7 in the process and know that Tim Lincecum may be their ace, but Matt Cain is their best pitcher right now. Cain was able (sorry, that's an awful cliche, but it's early and I need a cup of coffee), extending his postseason streak to 20-plus innings without allowing an earned run.

Hey FSU, not so fast my friend

This was supposed to be the beginning of the re-beginning for the Florida State Seminoles. New coach Jimbo Fisher has some energy and some high-profile recruits and talked about returning FSU to the days when it was college football's bully. Well, bullies don't lose at N.C. State. Yes, Russell Wilson is a fine player. And yes, the crowd was into it. But FSU let a 21-7 halftime lead disappear to a team that lost its starting running back and has a 5-foot-11 quarterback. Bully for you - but not for me.

At least one area state champion will be crowned today

As the postseason in soccer, volleyball and Georgia softball continues to speed toward state-title dreams and coming-oh-so-close heartbreaks, there will be at least one are team celebrating today. Signal Mountain and Boyd-Buchanan face in the Class 1A state volleyball final this afternoon at 3 p.m. Softball's state championships in Columbus, Ga., will be Saturday and the soccer state tournament will be next week here in Chattanooga.

Go Favre, Favre away

Seriously, between the ankle, the alleged text messages and snapshots of his private parts and all the other drama, it's time for Brett Favre to go away. Now the talk about his feud with Vikings coach Brad Childress may cause him to end Favre's streak of 291 consecutive starts. Seriously? Either play or don't. Either win or don't. It has become too much. A side note, Favre, a longtime spokesman for Wrangler, has endorsed a new line of No-Fly jeans. Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week.

Thank goodness it's Friday

If you don't like college football, well, I feel sorry for your friends and family. There I said it. And this is going to be a great weekend of college football. I wrote about this in today's Times Free Press - which on Friday's includes the Blitz section which is worth about $500 but you can get it for 50 cents.

There are no fewer than four unbeaten teams - Auburn, Michigan State, Missouri and Oregon - that have serious tests on the road in conference games this weekend. Giddy up. Here is the link to the SEC Blitz preview, and at the bottom is a TV guide for the top games on Saturday's college football slate. Enjoy, and I'll see you at 2 p.m.
