Fire contained, crews wait for rain

A Mowbray Mountain fire first reported Thursday afternoon is contained but will not die until rain arrives.

Shane Petty, chief ranger for Tennessee State Parks, said more than 100 volunteers worked the fire line over the weekend and have the fire contained.

A crew of 20 volunteers, emergency and parks officials will "baby-sit" the fire, monitoring the line until the blaze dies out.

"A fire of this magnitude, it will basically smolder for weeks on end until we get rain," he said.

Petty estimated that the fire has covered at least 500 acres. Smoke has spread throughout the surrounding 50-mile area.

"Wind's going to spread (smoke) around," he said. "Smoke will rise during the day and drop to the bottom at night."

There hasn't been any major property damage or injuries reported. The source of the fire can't be determined until the fire is extinguished.

Petty said the state parks, especially along the Cumberland Trail, have banned any campfires. On Sunday three individuals crossed police tape and the fire line and started a campfire.

"Not only did we have to fight a fire, we had to go in and arrest three individuals," he said.
