Council delays decision to allow backyard chickens

The Chattanooga City Council will look again next week at a proposed ordinance allowing chickens in backyards after hearing several arguments about what it could cost the city to allow the fowl.

At a meeting today of the council's Legal and Legislative Committee, Karen Walsh, executive director of the McKamey Animal Care and Adoption Center, told council members there were several problems that need to be addressed before the city allows chickens.

"We don't want to end up as the McKamey Animal Farm," she said.

Proponents of backyard chickens contend they are good source for local food and can be educational to children.
