GBI awarded for unit that targets child porn and predators

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation received an international award for the departments unit that targets child pornography and Internet predators.

The 2010 Award for Excellence in Criminal Investigators was given to the GBI's High Technology Investigation Unit today in Orlando, Fla., by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, said GBI's spokesman John Bankhead in a news release.

The award, which is given to a law enforcement agency, unit or task force for excellence in the area of criminal investigations, was presented during the Annual conference for association, he said.

The GBI's investigation unit that received the award also houses the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which includes 100 local agencies and works to identify those involved in child porn trade, Bankhead said.

In 2009, the task force arrested 109 and through September this year has arrested 143, he said.
