Nunley says TBI 'fabricated' confession in bribery case

GRUETLI-LAAGER, Tenn. - Former Grundy County Schools Superintendent Joe Nunley called a news conference Friday in Greutli-Laager claiming the TBI fabricated a confession attributed to him to keep him from seeking a retrial in an assault conviction and to make their case in an unrelated bribery charge.

Nunley was recently at odds with Grundy schools officials over a teaching job he applied for after having completed probation requirements in a court-ordered judicial diversion which expunged his record of a reckless aggravated assault conviction and the bribery charge.

Now, Nunley says he is sending a letter to the U.S. attorney general's office requesting that it investigate the TBI for a statement dated June 3, 2003, that he says was "completely false," stemming from the bribery charge.

Nunley said the "fraudulent" TBI document is evidence of corruption that should be investigated by federal authorities.

TBI officials declined to comment on the allegations but said they stand by the TBI agent's work.
