Whitfield County man remains in jail after shooting girlfriend

A Whitfield County, Ga., man remains in the county jail after police say he shot his girlfriend, a police officer, in the leg Tuesday morning.

Police believe Melvin Roberts, 55, of 166 Valley Point Drive, shot his live-in girlfriend, Sara Denise Shinall, 47, in the leg and then kept her from calling 911 for almost an hour, Whitfield County Maj. John Gibson said.

Shinall is an officer with the Emerson Police Department in Bartow County.

Police believe Roberts was angry with Shinall and accused of her being in another relationship before shooting her, Gibson said.

Roberts has been charged with aggravated battery with a gun, aggravated assault with a gun, false imprisonment and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, Gibson said.
