A freshman brought a box cutter to after-school athletic practice and used it to stab a junior at Hixson High School this afternoon, officials said.

The junior was taken to Erlanger hospital with a cut on his arm and the top of his head, said Hamilton County School spokeswoman Danielle Clark. The students, whose names were not released, got into a fight over a previous conflict, Clark said.

One of the students was at the school for baseball practice and the other was playing soccer, but it was not clear which, she said.

The student accused of bringing the box cutter was taken into custody by Chattanooga police, according to Clark.

The student faces disciplinary action from the school system once more details emerge, she said.

"Being at an extracurricular activity is just like being at school," she said.

She said it's the first such incident at Hixson High in three or four years.
