Two suspects are in custody for the mid-afternoon theft on Monday of metal storm drain grates, the Bradley County Sheriff's Department said.
Heinz Eugene Appelt, 46, and Kimberly Atkins, 37, both of 1600 South Lee Highway, were both taken into custody for theft of over $1,000.
Deputies arrived and found the couple had loaded four grates into the back of a van and a fifth was lying beside the vehicle, police said.
Police said the grates were taken from the 20th Street overpass on APD 40.
The five grates the couple planned to sell to a scrap metals dealer were valued at $1,250, police said.
