Brainerd Levee getting $500,000 evaluation

More than $500,000 worth of work will begin soon to make sure the Brainerd Levee is fully functional and in good condition.

The city expenditure is related to a new Federal Emergency Management Agency requirement handed down after Hurricane Katrina.

"I don't expect any major construction out of this," said assistant city engineer Dennis Malone. "We may find a place or two. If that's the case we may have to do some localized repair work."

Malone said city officials walk the length of the levee with TVA representatives every year and address any problems found at that time.

He explained that the engineer-certified report will mean citizens in the area do not have to have flood insurance and that the area could receive emergency assistance in the case of any related natural disaster.
