Red Cross volunteers head to storm damage

Four local Red Cross volunteers are headed to Virginia and North Carolina to help the thousands of people affected by strong tornadoes Saturday night.

Homes were ripped from their foundations, cars were flipped and trees were uprooted Saturday, leaving some areas still inaccessible Monday afternoon. Officials say more than 1,000 families will be homeless in North Carolina.

So far, Red Cross workers sheltered more than 500 people over the weekend, providing food and basic necessities as the clean up begins.
