A driver was "conscious and alert" today despite having his minivan smashed by a tractor-trailer truck, police said.

The crash occurred in front of the Police Services Center on Amincola Highway about noon and sent the driver to Erlanger hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Chattanooga police spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary.

The truck driver told police he was traveling northbound on the highway when the southbound minivan veered into his lane. The truck rolled over the hood of the minivan as it slid underneath.

Neither driver was named by the police.

The crash, which shut down the highway for about an hour, might have been caused by a medical situation, Weary said, and charges are pending further investigation.
