Rescuers describe assault of 88-year-old Memphis woman

When a man forced his way into the home of an 88-year-old woman three years ago, two other women from the South Memphis neighborhood rushed over and helped chase the man off.

Then the victim's grandson got a pistol, tracked the man down and fired six shots, hitting the suspect three times.

Defendant Sylvester Smith survived that afternoon of Oct. 3, 2008, though on Tuesday he was on trial in Criminal Court on charges of aggravated burglary and aggravated kidnapping stemming from the incident.
