Richard "Rick" Wilson qualified Tuesday to run as the first Democrat in the 2012 special election for county mayor.

Wilson, a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga political science professor, announced he was exploring a possible run last week.

Wilson is currently serving as his own treasurer and has also listed a political committee, Citizens for a Constitutional Chattanooga, which he said will help in his effort.

He said he's contributed some of his own money to the campaign and plans to ramp up his fundraising efforts after he finishes grading this semester's papers.

The qualifying deadline for the March 6 primaries in the county's property assessor, District 3 and county mayor races is Thursday at noon.
