An electrical spark appears to have caused a fire in a Chattanooga house this morning.

Firefighters arrived at 4402 Midland Pike about 7:30 a.m. to put out a fire in the hallways, according to Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner.

Fire Investigation Division Lt. Henry McElvain said a space heater was plugged into a cheap extension cord and the cord couldn't handle the electrical output, causing sparks.

The fire was mostly limited to a hallway, but smoke damaged the rest of the house, Garner said.

No one was home at the time of the fire.
