Michigan Avenue Elementary School in Cleveland, Tenn., has been honored as one of four Tennessee schools named as 2012 Title 1 Distinguished Schools for exceptional student performance, officials with the state Department of Education said today.

Title 1 schools serve a large percentage of economically disadvantaged students.

"All kids can learn and be successful, and these outstanding schools prove just that," Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman said in a statement. "I want to congratulate these four schools and thank them for setting a high bar for achievement."

The other schools in Tennessee that earned the distinction are Fairmont Elementary School, Johnson City Schools; John P. Freeman Optional School, Memphis City Schools; and David Crockett Elementary, Lawrence County.
