The Dalton Police Department is investigating a traffic crash that occurred on E. Walnut Avenue this afternoon.

The 3 p.m. crash just west of Riverbend Road involved a silver BMW driven by 24-year-old Roberto Melendez of Dalton, police said in a news release. The BMW was struck by a red PT Cruiser, driven by 26-year-old Christopher Cason of Chattanooga, as both vehicles traveled west on E. Walnut.

After the initial wreck both vehicles crossed the median, taking out several trees before coming to rest in the eastbound lanes. The BMW landed on its top after rolling several times, police said.

A passenger in the PT Cruiser, Timothy Hall of Chattanooga, was taken to Hamilton Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. There were no major injuries, police said.

Evidence at the scene suggests that a car headed eastbound took evasive action to avoid the BMW and the PT Cruiser as they crossed into the eastbound lanes and could be a key witness in the cause of the crash, police said.

The driver of that vehicle is asked to call the Dalton Police Department's Traffic Enforcement Unit at 706-278-9085, ext. 124, with any information.
