The Dalton Police Department Explorers won two awards at a recent competition held during Winterfest in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

The Explorers competed in three different categories, finishing first in the "Felony Traffic Stop" scenario, third in the "Domestic Violence" scenario and placing fourth in the "Active Shooter" scenario, according to a news release.

The Law Enforcement Explorer Program allows young men and women between 14 and 20 years old to gain training and experience in the law enforcement field, according to the release. The program also provides opportunities for community involvement and development.

Explorers must be between 14 and 20 years old, maintain at least a C average and stay in school until graduation or obtaining a GED. Explorers also attend regularly scheduled meetings, which include physical training. Officers David Saylors, Ashley Payne and Daniel Jones currently oversee the program.
