Man accused of threatening witness sent to grand jury

A 47-year-old man awaiting trial on an attempted murder charge will have a new charge sent to the Hamilton County Grand Jury.

Leon "Big Poppa" Holmes was arrested Jan. 31 on charges he threatened a witness in his upcoming trial. This morning Hamilton County General Sessions Court Judge Bob Moon bound his case over to the Grand Jury for possible indictment.

Court records show that Holmes was arrested in connection with the shooting of Cecil Stodghill, Sr. on Feb. 27, 2010.

While out on bond in January police say he walked up to a witness in his upcoming trial and told him not to show up in court, and "that if he did, him or his 'boys' would take care of him."

The Feb. 2010 arrest report states that a witness saw Holmes walk into the LG Lounge, shoot Stodghill twice in the chest and flee in a white Cadillac Escalade.

Police responded to the shooting and tracked down Holmes at another location. They found an empty holster in his vehicle but no weapon.

Holmes has previously been charged with aggravated assault charges in 2009 and drug charges in 1997, according to criminal court records.
