State transportation department crews are using track hoes today to break up large boulders after a rock slide Sunday that blocked state Route 108 between Viola and Altamont.

Jeremy Price, overseeing the work for the Tennessee Department of Transportation, said crews were making progress.

"We may start drilling the larger boulders [Tuesday] to start blasting," he said.

Officials said it could be three weeks before the road is cleared. Cleaning up the rock slide, which happened shortly after midnight Sunday, is estimated to involve moving 23,000 tons of rubble.
