Wacker Chemical has hired the first nine local engineers for its project team related to its $1.45 billion plant under construction in Bradley County, an official said today.

Thomas Kastenberg, senior engineer for the plant, said it wants "local talent" to be part of the German company's team from the start.

Wacker plans to hire 650 people by the time the plant is in full production in 2014, he said. The plant is expected to be finished in late 2013.

Kastenberg said the plant, which will make hyperpure polycrystalline silicon for the solar industry, will have "a very sophisticated and advanced process."

"This will truly be a state-of-the-art facility," he told a group of local engineers.
