A break in a water line has shut down water across downtown Chattanooga, a Tennessee-American Water spokeswoman said today.
"It's affecting entire downtown Chattanooga," Kim Dalton said.
Dalton said a contractor not affiliated with the water company struck a 24-inch main water line this morning on 14th and Cowart streets. She said water crews are in the process of rerouting water and fixing the pipe.
She said she did not know how long water would be out in downtown, but crews were working as fast as possible.
BlueCross BlueShield's headquarters on Cameron Hill and the Chattanooga Times Free Press were without water, affecting thousands of employees.
BlueCross BlueShield has set up a shuttle service for its employees to other downtown locations that have water.
