The head of Chattanooga's Volkswagen plant said today his team is working toward growing production at the plant with a potential new model, but it may be awhile before a decision is made.

"We're trying to do everything to make it happen," said Frank Fischer, chief executive of the German automaker's Chattanooga operations.

Fischer said in remarks after addressing Chattanooga Rotarians that the plant is now focused on launching its first vehicle, the all-new VW Passat.

He said the plant is to start making the first cars for customers in about four weeks.

An auto website reported earlier this week that VW is planning a major expansion for its Chattanooga plant. A second phase could add 180,000 to 200,000 units a year to the plant's output, said Automobilemag.com.
