Police have arrested a woman for the Thursday stabbing of a clerk at a downtown store.
Verdale Sheppard, of Chattanooga, was booked on charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated robbery today after she allegedly stabbed the 67-year-old store clerk in the head and face at the Downtown Mart at 706 Market St.
Sheppard, 44, reportedly began choking and banging the clerk's head into the ground, according to the arrest report.
As the clerk lay on the ground, almost unconscious, Sheppard knocked the cash register into the floor, took $100 and fled the store.
The clerk, Sun Yee Rhee, was taken to Erlanger hospital and treated for 12 stab wounds that took 18 to 20 stitches to close, according to the arrest report.
Sheppard contacted police today and said she wanted to turn herself in. Police went to her home and placed her under arrest. She's due in court March 11.
